March 1976, lost 4-0, John McGeady broke his leg. When my dad returned to his car after the match, he found that his car were broken into and had the car radio stolen!
God when your down there's alus some bastard ready to kick ye.
Good job your dad was a proper Blade. The 4-0 drubbing would have been like water off a ducks back , a lesser man would have crumbled under the two blows.😭

Trying to match this press photo with the actual game. I believe it is from the 1948-49 season. Can anyone help with the line up pictured here?

Obviously I know a fair few (the more obvious ones!) but uncertain about others.

Love the away kit, presumably white with red collars and a red pocket?

Cheers

Fantastic, I knew I could rely on you, Silent.

I have a fair few press photos of United team line ups from the 40's and 50's. I had matched them all apart from this one.

Thanks a lot!

Am I correct with the colours of the away kit??

Graham Bailey (still alive, now 102),
Just reading about him online: https://www.htsa-web.com/post/heritage-an-interview-with-town-s-oldest-living-player

Graham recalls his first time at Sheffield United in the office while he was signing the contract at his new club: “I ended up transferring to Sheffield United, with Albert Nightingale going the other way. I was in the office and the offer was £10 a week and £12 if we won. I said to the manager, Ted Davison, that I’d heard that there were usually backhanders paid when someone was transferred. I can still remember his face to this day, I must have shocked him as he said ‘Heh?! No we’re not that type of club’. It turned out he was a churchgoer. I ended up becoming very friendly with Ted but it was my first telling off. He said ‘You’re getting exactly what we’ve offered you’. In my very first game at Sheffield United we actually played Town and I remember giving Vic Metcalfe a bit of a hard time.”

He is also Sheffield United’s oldest living player: “They did tell me I was the oldest one not long ago. I still think about all the lads at Town and until recently, didn’t realise I was the last one.”

This is not true though, right?

The only account I can find of this match online is on a Man City fan site at: Manchester City v Sheffield United 1975/76. It was written for a '20 years ago' feature during the 1995/96 season, but was presumably based on a contemporary newspaper report or two. It suggests that the Blades were the better side in the goalless first half but were thwarted by poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Corrigan. The second half seems to have turned into a bit of a procession for the home team.

The game is probably most notable for Dennis Tueart, whose winner the week before in the League Cup final came from a spectacular overhead kick, scoring another similar goal only a week later. Indeed, in his autobiography, Tueart said that the one against the Blades was better, but no footage exists so we'll never know for sure. I was at the game as a seven-year-old, but have no memory of the goal itself (probably wasn't concentrating at that age), though I do recall the very excited reaction to it of the fans around me and my dad.

P
I’m never any good at spotting old footballers, but I‘ll try. Alan Clarke talking to TC, Malcolm Mc Donald front row, second right. Peter Shilton back row, fifth right and Frank Worthington back row, fourth left. Any, or all of those may be wrong😀😀l
Phil Parker next to peter shilton and Gerry Francis in middle

I think so

Correct assumption on the away shirt colours. Eye witnessed this shirt as a kid but cannot recall any game, possibly CC matches.
I do remember going to Hillsborough for a Sheffield V Glasgow game and Sheffield wore that kit.
I remember because even as a kid it felt uncomfortable being there plus there were more Wednesday players in the team than any other club(team selected from all S Yorks. clubs) but the fact they wore a Blades kit made it OK for me. If you look in the Clarebrough 1st 100 Years book there is a photo.

I remember getting to the ground about 5 to 3 and still queues of Blades at the turnstiles outside. Me and 3 mates decided to go into the Bradford side of the terrace - not the best decision in the world ! Anyway there was a brief tussle and mainly a stand off until the pitch side coppers let us jump over the perimeter fencing and round into the Blades side. Oh to be 18 again !! 😎

Went up in an old Mini as daft 18 year olds. Parked on the wrong side of the ground but stumbled into a coach of Dinno Blades (the NCB donkey jackets were de-rigueur). Some right pirates on that bus and we'd stuck with them we'd have been fine, but they were heading to town looking for trouble, so we broke away. One kicking later we staggered into the away end, to be greeted with a volley of snooker balls. These then obviously get picked up and lobbed back, and so the 'fun' went on through the match.
