Got to say that’s a fitting first photo to a fantastic thread. You can’t beat a bit of floodlight porn and what a great view of the VIP/ press viewing area on top of the John Street. I attended my first match September ‘59 2-2 v Liverpool Shaw G on the score sheet with 2 pens.
When was that viewing area done away with? Can’t remember seeing it in the early sixties.

Didn’t the Luftwaffe have something to do with it?

Theodore Francis Johnson, know affectionately as 'Spike', looking a lot younger than I remember him.View attachment 139759
I remember Spike from Brushes. I played cricket for the school and recall one away match where we lost quite heavily but he bought all the team an ice cream. Don’t recall his teaching standards just the cricket stuff. He was much older than the picture shows and I reckon it must have been around ‘75 ish?

Do you remember Pod Harrison, Physics teacher I think?
Used to sit in this huge leather chair and drink tea from a thermos!

Silent confirmed this , in which case I’m thinking that the car may have belonged to the snooker player and entrepreneur Mike Watterson who had close ties with Chesterfield .

He was the man responsible for bringing the Snooker World Championship to the Crucible . He also took part in it and was a very decent player and by all accounts , a very sound and likeable bloke .
I used to work with Mike, as we were both croupiers at the Craywood club on Queens Rd in 1966/68. I can confirm that he was indeed a very engaging bloke and you could not help but like him. I was not at all surprised he went on to greater things as he definitely had the "Del Boy" outlook on life. I was very sorry to hear of his early death. He brought fame and fortune to the city and we should all be thankful for that. RIP Mike.

Thank you, more or less where the 'Hermitage' was built mid 60's.
The building on the right of your photo has bad recollections for me and still stand to this day.
Oh! and mum 'slow down, I'm having to run'.
Din't you hate that when your legs were much shorter than your parents.
Thanks again. :)
By looking closely at the photo, that poor lad was well hampered, only having one leg:).

Don’t remember the name but I remember the thermos. Do you remember Mr Smith, assistant head or something- everyone called him Adolf

Obviously Doc Pace centre, is it Keven Lewis behind the post?
Ray Wilson, trying to keep it out? 58/59 judging by the socks.
Sept 1958, 0-0 draw. Ray Wilson played, but Lewis didn’t. The player you mention could be Walter Gould, winger who played 5 games for us. I don’t remember him at all, and can’t find a photo of him from his Utd days. A few photos of that game from the old scrapbook:

Great caption about the hot shot from Hoyland, who is jumping with the keeper🤣

Tommy must have been quicker than we remember, but no doubt he was a fair player but recon he made a better wing half than inside forward.
Looking at his and Graham Shaw's boots, had a pair of those same year, bought off a lad at school. He and his dad sat in the directors box on John St. and we stood just BL side of players entrance so saw him at matches, a good lad but couldn't play football.
Thinking of it having seen your photos, the lad probably got the boots through SUFC as I hadn't seen them in Suggs etc. at that time.
Top photos by the way, Thank you.

Currie, Edwards and Jimmy Johnstone all in the same side - in the First Division is a new one on me.

The photo is taken from the program for 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town on the 20th of March 1976, it is a shot of the previous weekends home defeat to Wolves by 4-1 in which Johnstone scored our only goal. The caption to go with the photo reads "The quickness of the foot deceives the eye! Tony Currie goes one way, taking Daly and Carr with him, while Jimmy Johnstone goes the other way........With the ball."
The United team that day was, Brown, Franks, Garner, Flynn, Colquhoun, Bradford, Woodward, Johnstone, Guthrie, Currie, Edwards, substitute was Calvert.
Absolutely no idea if this is the spot to share it, but seems as good a place as anywhere for a bit of nostalgia – a fan’s account from the game, including reviews of the players. This is the game where on another thread Silent Blade
mentions an open goal missed by Kindon for Wolves (apparently nicknamed The Flying Wardrobe).

There will be about 20 of these to follow (mostly United): https://footballreports.substack.com/p/sheff-utd-1-4-wolves

First time I heard the chant, "Oh wanky wanky, wanky wanky wanky wanky Wanderers!"
