I am aware that Willie's last game was the home game against Millwall. You can see in the 1968-69 season video that in the Millwall game he wanted to take a free kick but Woody insisted on taking it and Willie showed a little despair in his body language. It was the right decision cos Addison headed in Woody's free kick.
We all know what Woodward could do with a ball but who's to say that if Carlin had taken the kick it wouldn't have been a goal. Maybe the team were under instructions to cold shoulder Carlin with the Derby interest or maybe Woodward wanted Currie at 8 rather than at10, which is what happened after Rowley 'faffed' around with Munks, Hill and Addison at 8.
Willie Carlin was a more than decent player, should never have gone when he did, Rowley was a miss fit, did great for Shrewsbury and should have stayed there. We've all seen it many times, some people are better where they are, moving is not always good, job was too big for him.

Castle Market in background opened 1959 therefore the building of B&C store 1960's. Looks like they built half then opened it then built the other half, maybe you remember, I was out of Sheffield at this time.

Before my time, there's a previous photo of Castle House in this thread decked out for the Coronation in 1953, looking much like it is in this photo.

Have you got a light mac? No, but I’ve got a dark brown overcoat......thank you Vivian Stanshall about 1967 🙂
Big Shot
I am the Big Shot
You heard me right the first time. Name of batchelor Johnny Cool. Occupation: Big Shot. Occupation at the moment: just having fun. What a party that was - the drinks were loaded and so were the dolls. Yes we really should thank Viv S. Total genius but rather eccentric.

Yes in the 1968-69 season.

This is the story I read somewhere

Before our 2-0 win over Derby (Carlin scored one of the goals) in our 2nd game of the 1968-69 season, Clough came up to Carlin and said to him "I hear your boss doesnt fancy you!" Carlin was surprised and wondered if Clough tried to bribe him

A week or two later he refused to even talk about the possibility of a move to Derby, but one morning Sheffield United general manager John Harris told Carlin "your boss wants you in the office" so he went over to the office and was surprised to see Clough there with Rowley. Clough asked "Fancy joining Derby?". Carlin was taken aback and said "I have just moved house and I would need to discuss this with my wife". Clough then said "I will drive you to your house".

Carlin agreed to talk it over with his wife, Marie. Brian drove Carlin home to meet the missus but Clough was singing "Who wears the trousers, who wears the trousers?" during the car lift. It turned out she was not too enthused about Sheffield and when Willie asked her: "Do you want to move to Derby?'' she replied instantly: "Now or tomorrow? We have only just moved house". Clough then went to talk to her, Carlin was taken aback "It is me you are trying to sign!" Clough replied "I have already signed you, now I am talking to the wife"
That`s Clough all over, and replicated a few times in similar vein.
As for Carlin -------" Come on without, Come on within, You`ll --------. I`m sure you know the rest !
