it's halfway through the repair work after the Luftwaffe tried to destroy us.

Don't you remember that white wall at the John Street end of the Kop, it used to have three black advert boards on it in the end and reminded me of a church hall.

I don't remember John St looking like that, I assumed Bert was correct with his 1952 which was away from home. Amazingly, we played them the following season in the FA Cup at home, the only two FA Cup games between us. It does explain the big ground though :)
That part was bombed in December 1940 and it took many years before they got the corner sorted

Bert has checked the dates.

12th January 1952 Home win 2-0 34,468 attendance

10th January 1953 Away win 1-4, 23,000

Great Kit that!

Spent ages looking at this one before figuring it out, too young to remember Change Alley but eventually recognised show of the buildings

Building in the background is Midland Bank, now the Bankers Draft. Building on the right is Walsh's that became Rackhams. Is it Sports Direct now. The sweet shop in the foreground is Thornton's and may well have been their very first shop.

Before becoming a pub

There's something fundamentally wrong when a person remembers a building being constructed and then is still alive when its pulled down.
Fire station here on Division Street was replaced by a brand new build on Wellington Street. In next to no time that fire station was reduced to rubble and a new one built on the other side of the Moor.
Similarly, as much as we all hated the 'egg box' Town Hall it's criminal that a building is built and then pulled down in such a short space of time.
If it's a private developer wanting to do this then fine. Their money they can do as they wish. But when it's public money then it's treating all of us who put a shift in to pay our taxes with so little respect. Decisions being made by those who have no real understanding of the value of money.

It was the Bank and Rackhams that gave it away in the end

Add to that Norfolk Park flats, Kelvin, Hyde Park, Claywood, Park Hill, Don Valley, Sheaf Valley baths plus umpteen schools. And you don't have to be really that old to remember some of them. The waste of money is staggering.

Park Hill and Hyde Park are still standing aren't they?

Money well spent in my opinion, I would have been brought up in a two-up two-down slum with an outside shithouse or died young of TB or another ailment otherwise.

90% of Hyde Park was demolished, the two wings standing now were reserved for the student games. Park Hill may as well be as the bulk of it is serving no useful purpose and won't be for the foreseeable future.

I know the Earl Francis side and the centre of HP went for housing but thought the Maltravers Road end was in use. Thought plans were in place for further redevelopment of Park Hill?

The developers, Urban Splash aren't that flush. I think they may need to shift a few dozen units to generate the readies to do up a few more.

A mate's daughter has bought one and is reasonably happy so far although I think some of the services leave a bit to be desired.

Strangely fond memories of the place. As a teenager, I did holiday cover the S&E Co-op and spent a summer on Park Hill in the early 80s. The clientele were rough and ready but mainly decent folk. More frozen food sold there than any other S&E including much bigger shops. Useless fact and unlikely to be that helpful in all but the most obscure pub quizzes.

Pub Quiz in the Parkway, first question, "who are you fucking looking at?"

Two up two down? Posh bugger.I was born in a one up one down back to back slum, we shared the outside bog with the house we were back to back with. The houses were not fit for human habitation and it was a great day when we moved
