Norwood

Funny how people see games so differently.

I thought Norwood was one of our better players. At least he ALWAYS shows for the ball and wants to make things happen, even if sometimes it doesn’t come off.

The same can’t be said about Berge tonight but to be fair to the lad, he looked dead on his feet second half. Should've been hooked instead of Doyle.
To me I find it easier to forgive players who want the ball and don't hide.

Duffy was also like this. Even if he wasn't having the most productive game himself, he was always busy and available and Norwood is the same.

Norwood is involved. Yes on occasion his radar might be a bit off, he might give away possession or miss the odd tackle.

But what I like about him is that he seldom has a quiet game, one of those where you say you hardly noticed him. Even Fleck has those, but seldom Norwood and I can back a player like that.

The club could get another season out of Norwood. He just needs a couple of hard working, talented youngsters each side of him to do the donkey work.*
Norwood could then get back to his Hollywood best.
That would be ok in the championship, but not sure about the PL if we do get promotion?

*Doyle and McAtee come to mind.
If you had a supreme athlete next to Norwood you could get another 2 to 3 years out of him. He could easily do the Jan Molby job while someone else patrols up and down. If you'd got Prime Vieira next to him then he could play on until retirement. Just like Billy, his game has never relied on pace. It's just the point where he becomes more of liability when you don't have the ball, and at a higher level you will have less, that his age will tell.

You’re bang on. Even when he’s having a poor game and has fans on his back, he never goes hiding.

Imagine if he rocked up at the Lane playing for the opposition and was constantly getting on the ball and looking to dictate play. The same fans who aren’t keen on him would be wanting him signed up ASAP.

I think McAtee and Doyle are more realistic options, for this season anyway. Can’t imagine a Prime Viera playing for the Blades, honestly. :)
Jan Molby? Different type of player from a different era. Can’t imagine Norwood carrying that kind of weight around.

I’m firmly on the fence where Norwood is concerned. He clearly knows that his options are up at the end of this season. I think he has already reached the point of liability suggested in your last sentence, but I still think he could contribute hugely this season. PH will keep picking him, but my suggestion gets the best out of him, and even hints at the player style we might need to replace Berge eventually.

I feel Norwood has overall upped his levels this season. Bit back to where he was in the promotion season.

We have a bit of an issue though in that he's quite key. And we don't have other players like him that can fill in or step up.
I guess when he's not available or when he is no longer at the club we have to change the dynamic of the midfield.

Doyle could possibly play this role a bit though.

When he’s on it the whole team is on it, he always looks for the ball even when he’s not at his best which is strong attribute to have. He never hides and he’s added more bite to his tackle he’s putting his foot in more so than ever. One of those players when he’s gone only will he be fully appreciated. He’s a Top player.

The first season he played for us, Norwood was my favourite player. For me he was the difference that got us promoted.
However, he has zero pace and clearly he knows it, so that now as soon as he gets the ball, he invariably plays a first time ball regardless of whether the pass is on or not. Sometimes they come off but increasingly he’s looking like the kid who gets rid of the ball before he gets tackled.

I been harsh on Norwood when he was more error prone in more crucial situations. He has been better some time now and the timeline is kinda same with Flecks absense. Not sure if these relate.

Previous game Norwood did his usual stuff, but I don't count his in as one of the flops. The "30M dollar baby" Berge was and has been kinda missing in many games only showing few potential moments in whole game.

One thing that personally disturbs me is Berges (first) touch on the ball, that ain't smooth. The ball seems to always bounce like meter away from him and he needs to do extra work to gain the posesession.

Think Norwood had played very well this season more so when Doyle playing , needed a player with energy at the side of him & Doyle’s provided this . No he’s not gonna be covering every blade of grass but is an intelligent player who links up play well . As said above he doesn’t hide when he’s made a mistake and we are better team when he’s playing . Too often a scape goat for a few ppl who seem to wear red & white tinted glasses when clearly some of the golden boys have had poor games but never seem to get put put under the spotlight ⚔️

We should be trying someone else on corners and freekicks floaty corners to anybody is just wasted chances.

Genuinely thought first half he was throwing himself in to some tackles and trying to make a difference.

I always feel in a few years time people will look back and see what he did for us and in the promotion season and how little he cost and appreciate him a touch more

He was our standout player.
Absolutely bossed the game and dictated the tempo second half.

Interesting to hear Dean Smith describe him as our "big player" that they needed to stop.

Good without the ball in the first half, excellent with the ball second half.

He's having a very good season.
Shame we can't keep players fit enough around him to keep promotion form going.

He looked chuffed to bits when he was told. A nice moment. He doesn't get the recognition he often deserves.
Rarely, if ever, gets man of the match - despite being central to everything we do.

He must of been sat there before wondering why the fuck is there some random award cluttering the table. 😄

Has Pommpey seen this :)

What is there to see?

There are 'stats' and then there are 'stats'.

To repeat ... again ... I am not denying he has improved this season. But we all thought he'd toast this league in the first season, especially under a new manager he's has experience of before. In short he was bobbar, just as bobbar as he was during our dismal PL relegation season. He couldn't do the functions of a true RM playmaker in Slavs 4-3-2-1. or 3-4-3, because it removed his USP, the 'ping to the wing'. As I have demonstrated countless times, that is a failed strategy these days especially as we don't have the structure we had when it was most effective, i.e. a very mobile trio of sided centrebacks, wingbacks and sided midfielders on either flank who would move up the pitch in a pack and get the cross in to Billy or Leon. That's where a lot of our goals came from and certainly on our ascendancy from L1 to PL, he made the difference.

Now after trying the same old dog/old tricks schtick and not being anywhere near as successful he's tried to change his game somewhat but for all the passing (as Revolution pointed out a few years ago in this thread) he sits deep, receives, passes back, receives, passes sideways, gets it back, clips it across to George, he has his route blocked (or has no options) and it goes back to Bash, back to Egan, to Norwood again ... etc ... rinse/repeat. The ball hardly leaves our half and we are basically static. Now if that bumps the stats up and makes him Aders Iniesta to you then fine, but to me he's still 'marginally improved' to me but nowhere near the solution. And whilst he remains in the squad, we'll never break out of 5-3-2 and Wilderball tactics and still be not agile enough to plan B our game when plan A is failing because outside his usual game, Norwood can't do anything much else.

One thing is for certain, we should take the fucking hint that Brighton and Fulham made when they went up and jettison him if we get promoted because he will continue to be a fucking liability against far cleverer, agile and mobile midfields, even in the struggling teams
