Norwood

I think Berge can play the Norwood role, but when he came on the other week he seemed to up the tempo more often than slow it down.

I agree most of what we’ve seen of Berge, like Freeman, he wants to take more time on the ball. But when he comes into games, Berge has created a spark… I think where he struggles is when teams are over physical, he either gets drawn into scrappy battles or he goes all Barry Bannan and disappears as the opposition overrun him.

Really looking forward to seeing more of Berge as we gather momentum as a team, but for now it’s Norwoods shirt to lose
I dont think its either/or they play different games ,if he does have to shoehorn him in it has to be alongside each other ,thats not worked before but to be fair looking at Berges record it hasnt partnering him with anyone. Its a long hectic season though ,no one will play every game ,thought MGW and Ndaiye looked fatigued yesterday ,but they have been the catalyst for Fleck and Norwood ,maybe Baldock too.

I honestly think Berge would slow us down ,then we look pedestrian as a team.
Hmm possibly. Think it depends on the opposition I suppose. If their midfield has 3 in there, Norwood can bypass them. If they have a 2 then Berge will have more joy as he bursts forward more often and is deceptively quick and strong when doing it.

I don’t think playing Norwood and Berge together in the middle has worked but they can play in the same side.

You're right, we did have a number of players looking fatigued, hopefully the likes of Berge, Brewster, Mousse, Bogle etc can come back in when needed and provide that spark.

Thought it was a mixed bag from him. Some nicely spread passes, but his lack of mobility and also positivity is clear as day.
There was a moment in the first half where he had the chance to carry the ball forward and play a pass, he was literally jogging looking over his shoulder waiting to be caught. He doesn't trust his legs. It's so difficult to dominate the middle of the park with him in there offering no physicality or mobility. We have no presence in battle.

Yeah, I saw that. He has literally no pace whatsoever. But like hourihane played well today, clearly Luton did zero homework on our midfield. Or our defence.

He has not been our worst player by a long way this season and has been reasonably good in a number games this season. We look better when he is ticking, given what we have in the squad. But, he is not the answer to any question as to how we progress as a team beyond this season

What utter bollocks

Absolutely this....that ball falls to someone like Daniel Johnson, Tom Lawrence or Harry Wilson they are on the edge of the opposition box in seconds.

Played a lot better today but I’m not sold on a pairing of him and Hourihane against sides that want to play through the middle on the deck it’s too static of a two and gets played round/through too easily

He’s never going to be a box to box midfielder at the age he is now but was definitely chasing down more today and putting tackles in. He got a couple of claps of encouragement from the gaffer too, as if Hecky had had a chat about the midweek collapse from the midfield.

That combo is fine against Luton and Preston (ish) but West Brom would rip it apart with athleticism

He's only 30. It's not an age thing.

Ronaldo Vieira would've been the perfect type of player to play alongside him, shame he was crocked. Don't think Norwood and Hourihane offer enough defensive solidity for me, not that it was needed against a limp looking Luton.

Norwood is not the problem. Put a big, box to box shithouse next to him to do the dirty work and he is an excellent playmaker at this level. Baffles me how we still haven’t addressed this issue!

Yep, Hourihane is the worst possible partner for Norwood, we need a footballing terrier alongside Norwood, thats why 2017-20 Fleck was perfect

I’ve thought the same for a long time although he doesn’t have to be big - just brave , energetic , and determined to snuff out danger before it develops further .

The type of player who is often much underrated until there isn’t one in the team , when fans then begin to appreciate the contribution they made to the overall team performance . Good examples of this from the past include Charlie Hartfield and Mark Patterson .

I would have mentioned Monty but chose not to do so in case Pinchy is looking in .......... :)
