Norwood

We would not have achieved automatic promotion last season without Norwood,he was probably our most influential player. The fact that he played with a restrictive injury and still put in excellent performances is to his credit and to his importance to the team. However, we will have to wait and see how a fully fit Norwood handles the challenge of the premiership,i have a feeling that he will have a very good season,he is one of the current squad that we don't have anything to worry about.

Predictably sensitive, horrified (and even abusive and pig labelling) reaction to this but he's more likely to need replacing than Fleck IMO and his two previous promoted clubs haven't dumped him for no reason.

He'll get his chance and might take it, I do think his best is still to come, but we need to sign someone who can seriously challenge him for that position. Someone with a level of physicality. Over reliance on Norwood would be a dangerous approach.

Leroy Fer, who we're linked with, on a free would offer good competition and there's every chance he'd take his place.

Player on way down alert!
He’s an ex dutch international who’s played a fair bit in the premier league during his prime years, and spent a good amount of time having injuries. He will also be wanting a fairly big wage as that’s what he’s used to.
On top of that he strikes me as the kind of player who has ability but hasn’t quite made the most of it, at a decent Swansea side playing a level lower he’s hardly set the championship alight.

So if we are drowning in cash and can afford to throw 50k a week at the treatment table and the subs bench (because quite frankly he’s not going to push Fleck or Norwood out of the team) then he might be someone Wilder will look at.
However, realistically he’s more likely to end up at a club like Forest, who think paying over the odds to a player who’s past his best is the best way to get promoted....in fact I could see the Pigs signing him.

There's injury prone then there's having a couple of injuries, he seems to be the latter.

Before last season (Feb 2018) he hadn't had any serious injury issues and played 30+ games every season.

He's likely to get back to fitness, if we're interested then our management/fitness staff will agree. If he does he'd be a big player for us.

I don't think he's in the position to be demanding big wages, he's in a similar situation to McGoldrick last summer.

Agreed. I think we should look at Fulham to show just how successful you can be by decimating the spine of your team. Ensuring Egan, Fleck and Norwood don't get a look in next season (a la Carney, Sessegnon and MacDonald) is the only sure fire way to guarantee success.

A few quality additions here and there and let's see what happens, spending £120 million is no guarantee of success so let's at least give the players that have got us here a chance.
https://www.fctables.com/oliver_norwood-vs-jota-294678-261975/ Tuffty wont spunk muny, we already have our Jota in Norwood but iniether will shine in the Prem. Piss about in mid field on the ball it will get nicked off you and fast players will have us on the back foot within seconds. We cant afford to keep recycling we need our mid fielders to be able to shoot from outside the box and billy to pounce on the spillage if they don't go in. Sort of thing....

Whatever anyone else thinks, I'm quite certain that Norwood will be a first team regular this season, along with Enda, JOC, Egan, Fleck, McGoldrick and probably Basham and Sharp.

Out of all our current squad, I'd say that Norwood is likely to be one of them that comfortably makes the step up.

After much debate and most disagreed with me thinking strikers should be a priority I think our first upgrade is someone who can keep Norwood on the bench...

Every player we sign we sgould be trying to upgrade otherwise whats the point in signing them

Every signing should be an upgrade
Its not being disloyal to our existing players, it's providing them with competition to keep their places

Every successful club looks for improvements, not cover

Not so sure on Mcgoldrick but the rest for deffo. I think we'll sign two forwards and I can see Didsy on the bench to begin with and then it depends on form of course.

I think Basham is the weakest link at the back....all those little mistakes he makes will get punished at this level, that'd be the first position i'd look to strengthen before the forwards and midfield.

Not for me mate but all about opinions. I'm not disagreeing that we need competition for Bash though.

Given that this is seemingly some sort of parody thread, I should probably try and bring some seriousness to it and use this thread to serve as an apology.

A few months ago I posted a gif-filled thread identifying The Toxic Ollie Zone. The lethal toxicity of that area in the right channel approaching the edge of the penalty area was such that it had contributed multiple assists. Putting the gifs together was a labour of love, fitting for the Valentines Day that the thread was posted.

Maybe it was me jinxing it, maybe it was the hernia injury, maybe it was the fact that all club scouts suddenly saw the crazy levels on their footballing Geiger counters, but for whatever reason the toxicity levels lowered to mere background levels. Norwood only mustered one further assist, not from the Toxic Ollie Zone, but from a corner – far away from the area in question.

I know it’s late, but all the same – apologies.

I honestly wouldn't like to say who can't or won't or will hack it next season....What I do know is we wrote off a fair few players(I know I did) who weren't good enough for a promotion push. These players have proved to be excellent Championship players and I see no reason why they can't be 'ordinary' Prem players.

We have a great bunch of lads..a great management pair...enjoy the ride,It's gonna be interesting.I'm not foolish enough to believe we'll avoid relegation but it's not beyond us to stay up.We have a good squad and with a little fresh blood can achieve something...

You’ll not get promoted from t’pub league. You’ll not stay up. You’ve no one we want in our team, nobdi’s good enough. You’ll not get promoted. Now it’s we’ll pass you next year cos tha’s nobdi good enuff for’t prem. Well.........CWAK thinks we have so let’s see eh?

We all got a bit sentimental when Norwood was keeping our “best player” out of the side. But when we all realised that he was very good upgrade on the previously brilliant Coutts......we all soon accepted it as natural progression of the team. The key this season is to find players who can put pressure on Norwood and Fleck. We definitely need a better quality “bench” this season. If we’d had decent cover for Coutts in our first season back in the Championship. We might now have been looking forward to our second season in the Prem.

I am sorry but that is ridiculous, did you watch The Blades last season. Norwood is probably up there as one of the best players I have seen in the last 30 years. He makes us tick.

Fulham thought the same thing as the OP, spunked a load of money and that worked out well! You can always improve a team, but we don't have an enormous budget and Ollie gas certainly earned his chance.

I would go the opposite way. He is eloquent, he is passionate, I see him as a future Captain.

So, just think how good somebody will have to be if he keeps Norwood out.

This is the way the club has to think. Not aaah well Norwood is decent let's sign some cover for him.

Every signing should be an immediate threat to last season's shirt holder

Funny innit
There's always next season to spout the same bullshit knowing full well that if they say it often enough their bound to be right one day when we have a bad season.

Then they can say "told you so"

It's true that football is a game of opinions , it's also true that it you use the right ground bait you get a lot of bites,
so here's mine.
Mr Wilder is no mug, and if he thinks something isn't working he will not hesitate in changing it..
Let's just wait and see what happens .

(Since I can no longer say Up the Blades)
C.O.Y.R.&.W.Wizards..

Interesting article about what went off last summer before joining us:

The down-to-earth nature allowed him to see the wonder in United's primitive Shirecliffe training base when English football's manager of the year Chris Wilder pursued his signing last August. There is unlikely to be an upgrade in facilities just because they've made the top flight.

'If you're privileged enough to go downstairs and see the dressing rooms, it's like Sunday League, there's a bench and a peg. There are no lockers, no fancy showers, there are toilets inside the changing room and the smell at times ain't great. It's old school but we come here to work, let's be honest,' he says.

No wonder there’s been recent suggestions to gerranewonebuilt. Much as I like Norwood’s attitude with that, you would imagine this sort of set-up might mean that Bale and Ribery might be put off from signing.

‘There's not been one moan or groan here this past year. The balls are pumped up, the grass is fine, our boots are fine and we're here to play football, not be pampered.'

Love him.
