Norwood

Despite having the best passing range of any blades players I’ve ever seen (being going since the early 80s) some people took against Norwood from the beginning and have tried to.

1. Have him replaced by Coutts despite the fact he could no longer run
2. Have him replaced by Lundstrum despite Lunny not being fit to lace his boots.
3. Now we’ve won promotion have him replaced with an upgrade despite the fact an upgrade would cost us our entire budget.

Not sure what he’s got to do to please some people.

i'm guessing from the opening post to wear blue and white stripes

Look, don't get me wrong I adore Ollie but there is a reason why he has been sold on once his team has been promoted. The premiership battles will need a man with Ollies touch in mid -field but must be a dog of war who when he has won his battle can strike a powerful shot from outside the box. Unless he can thread a needle through prem defenses to our new 30 mill strikers. Be honest, do you think we can out play in mid field and recycle out wide looking for the right ball into the box in the prem. If Wilder can sign who he wants Ollie will be on the bench or loaned out, no room for sentiment. Feel free to bring this post up when Ollie has 5 goals and 10 assists next season I will love to eat humble pie.

I'll get the oven warming up for that pie. It won't take long for Ollie to show how good he is.

Do you want ice cream or custard with it?

And we definitely need a striker or two. I'd like Che Adams back and our sell on clause would presumably give us an edge, but someone on here pointed out to me that he's a Leicester lad so presumably he'd favour them if they came for him.

I agree about Adams, but I think Leicester will be aiming higher than Che.

Completely agree. Although at times I was frustrated with Norwood not shooting more when in range and thought that also he disappeared at times when we were under pressure. That's probably indicative of how high he set the bar when he first came into the side. Knowing now that he needed a hernia op since Christmas shows just what a good player he is, to play with restrictions and still be one of the best in the league speaks volumes. If we are to bring in someone that keeps him on the bench - well we have either unearthed a gem at a bargain price, or suddenly been in a position to spend 20+ million on an established top international. Both of which are highly unlikely.

We need to look at improving those around him, giving him the ability to do what he is good at and pull the strings in the middle of the park.
I think you’ve nailed it. Improve players around him... either with new ones or improving the ones we have, I’d like to think that the players we have will step it up if we have more players to challenge them

Hope so, that's how Wilder has managed to sign some very decent overlooked players to date. British and Irish players aren't in fashion at the moment neither are managers from those countries. Doesn't mean there aren't some good ones knocking around and they have the advantage of being able to fit in and not get too concerned when it starts to piss it down while blowing a gale.

Really hope we could persuade Che to return. Only 22 years old and over 20 goals this past season in a not particularly brilliant team. He will improve and would also fit in straight away.

I'd have a bet with you for your box of doughnuts Pomps, but so many transfers are nowadays "not disclosed" or dependant on appearances or add ons so we'd only get into an argument. Think it will be more than 15 mill but certainly no more than 30 mill.

I doubt it. This court case is the biggest mis-timed spat going and looks like it's already biting us on the arse.

Everyone's pretty sanguine about the Sky Sports story about WBA and Wilder.

So far.

Although we have a bloody ace squad now, it's a squad based on Championship success. The step upwards and lengthwise to the Premiership is massive, and we have to bridge it.

pommpey

Yes it does, if you think Ollie is our best player and he is on the bench next season we might stay up.

And we would have spent 100m because we’d have to be replacing everyone if you don’t think our best player is good enough.

Logged on just to say this is the dumbest comment I’ve seen on here since the season ended.....and let’s be honest there has been some rubbish talked. Maybe you should take up ice hockey 😪

We certainly need competition in the midfield area but not sure we need to replace Norwood or fleck.
People like K MacDonald, Mikel, J Allen, Mooy

We could do with a couple of six foot three long legged skillful up and downers, christ knows who on our budget.

I think the OP is onto something here that's not really been exploited by the worlds top coaches.

Forget 3-5-2s, anchor men, two defensive midfielders, sweeper keepers, overlapping full backs, touchline huggers, number 10s.

What the top coaches should be concentrating on is forcing the goalkeeper spills from long distance strikes for striker tap ins.

I'd say someone who can compete with him not just throw him away completely. I think only way he would leave if Burnley came in for him.

If on the budget we've got you think Norwood is a priority we need to upgrade on, you're an idiot.

6 did, 3 didn’t but I’m sure you could work that out.

:) it was a rough guide as opposed a hard & fast rule, that’s why I said ‘approxiamtley’. I’d posted from memory. 12 is probably a truer figure. Of the relegated sides, I think Mitrovic at Fulham scored 11. Southampton from the teams that stayed up had two on 7. The point still stands, we need to acquire the services either by loan or purchase a double digit scorer, imho.

It's clear to me that the Norwood doubters fail to understand his role in the team , which is that of holding midfield player .

As such his first priority , and rightly so , is to take pressure off the back three by tackles , interceptions and making himself available to receive a pass from them when they are under pressure .

Having achieved this , his next priority is to try to turn defence into attack by delivering accurate passes both long and short to those in a more advanced position . In both respects there was no one better in last years Championship in my opinion and I have every confidence there will only be a handful better in next years Premier League .

Yes , it would be nice if he pinged in a few more goals to put the icing on the cake but the main responsibility for that lies elsewhere .

Predictably sensitive, horrified (and even abusive and pig labelling) reaction to this but he's more likely to need replacing than Fleck IMO and his two previous promoted clubs haven't dumped him for no reason.

He'll get his chance and might take it, I do think his best is still to come, but we need to sign someone who can seriously challenge him for that position. Someone with a level of physicality. Over reliance on Norwood would be a dangerous approach.

Leroy Fer, who we're linked with, on a free would offer good competition and there's every chance he'd take his place.

Though the same reservations were had about the step up to the championship.

Luckily Chris Wilder seems to relish a challenge.

Probably need to get used to it, when we inevitably lose 4 games on the spin next season the fallout on here blaming the owner (s) manager and team will be a thing of biblical proportions.

Lose a pre season friendly and the dummy's will be spat out.
