I was so optimistic after the PNE game, I allowed myself to get a bit carried away.

But that was poor (again) today.
We look like what we are. A team of strangers that have been thrown together and don't quite know their roles.

The midfield, which was superb in the opener, looks totally disjointed.
Hamer and O'Hare are playing with too much arrogance, constantly trying to force things that aren't on.

K Moore cuts a lonely figure up front and is unable to link the play in the same way McBurnie could. His touch just isn't sharp enough. I rate him at this level, but he can't be all we have or we'll be very predictable and easy to defend against.
Given Brewster's form & fitness, we really need another 2 strikers.
Sargent gave them a lot of presence up front, if we have come into a few quid I think we could do a lot worse than him. He's a Yank too!

Perhaps things will start slotting together as the group bonds and Wilder figures everyone out, but we look some way off an automatic contender right now.

We need to have a really positive final week of the transfer window as the options off the bench (Slimane, Brewster etc.) aren't enough.

Good point away from home at a top half side. I actually thought Norwich looked very good.

Always feels crap when the opposition ends the game in the ascendency but overall a very even game of quality championship football in wet conditions.

Some good stuff - Gilchrist, Brooks, Arblaster and Souttar were all very good. Some not great today - Hamer, O’Hare, Moore and trusty were poor.

We’ve got plenty to work on but we’re going to be a work in progress for the first 20 games. Just have to accept that.

Overall I would have settled for two draws and a win from our first three games. Still need a couple of bodies in and to get a couple more up to speed. Feel more upbeat today than same time last week. If we hadn’t conceded that shit goal against QPR we’d all be happy today.

Enjoyed the game. Fair result.

Quick thoughts:

Cooper: good handling, terrible distribution
Gilchrist: my MOTM. Strong at the back, got forward ok, saved us at the death with a great tackle
Burrows: ok at the back. Good going forward, good set pieces and was unlucky with a great strike that Gunn saved well
Souttar: apart from the goal where he was partially at fault I thought he did well. Good with his feet and in the air
Trusty: mainly at fault for the goal. Sergeant was his man and he lost him. Better in the 2nd half
Souza: worked very hard despite a lot of physical treatment. Helped to break up play
Brooks: good down the wing and involved in the goal. 2nd to Gilchrist
Arblaster: not at the races until his excellent goal. Fine thereafter
Hamer/O’Hare: look good in flashes but never threatened end product and no final ball at all
Moore: Isolated and second best to Norwich CBs. Wasted glorious chance to put Campbell in at the end

Sachdev: on for 30 secs only
Slimane: never seems fully in control of anything he’s doing
Campbell: one good run, easily knocked off the ball when he got into the box
Rak-Sayki: a couple of nice dribbles. Decent cameo.

Playing Moore as a lone striker will not work when he's having an off day and Wilder needs to recognise that and have an alternative plan.
And that's just one example.
Bringing on Slimane (effectively) for O'Hare is another.
Surely that has to be Campbell or Brewster if you want to win.
Wilder is just incapable of reading the game which is unfolding in front of his eyes. And I don't see how that's going to improve.
As a result , he fails to make tactical or substitute changes , either early enough or at all , which could win us the game.

Desperate for more striking options, was plain to see today, we need a goal scorer who’s gonna get 15-20 goals. When can’t rely on Moore for 43 games.

We're not really creating much either though. Tom Cannon, who we're linked with, plays on the shoulder, runs in behind and is a decent finisher. But is our system geared towards that sort of player?

O'Hare and Hamer need to be doing so much more for us with the quality they possess.

You either get good habits surging through a team or you get bad ones, we started off for a game and half with the good habits but in true Sheffield United fashion it doesn't take long for standards to slip.

You could almost feel in the few minutes after our second goal against QPR, "That's it lads, take a well earned rest, it's easy this Championship malarkey"

Sad thing is, without that second goal United would probably have won because they'd have had to stick to the task.

I remember an opening game at Norwich in the top flight in the early 90's, we controlled the game and went one nil up, continued to control the game and made it 2-0 with about ten minutes to go.

Then we went all Sheffield United, sat back, panicked, and drew 2-2.
I always say we'd have won that game 1-0 if we'd not scored the second.

Creatively I thought O'Hare was the one it didn't happen for today. He could have been hooked earlier for me, it just clearly wasn't his day.

Decent result and performance. Tricky fixture and showed some grit defending albeit with a few lucky breaks. Game could have gone either way but a draw a fair result.
Looked cohesive and will improve but 3 games in and undefeated , I'll take that .

I don’t think it was as bad as you say, but you are bang on about Hamer/O’Hare, who were both guilty of seeing moves break down due to over elaboration on a number of occasions.

We have to have another forward who is competent if we are to do anything this season.

No, but I could have done, it's pretty obvious for about 50 years now that the bare minimum achievement is good enough, it comes from the club initially, but allowed to happen because of a fan base that expects ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL EVER.

So how do you explain the second goal against Preston?

Were you hiding behind the sofa when Hamer lobbed the keeper?

Were you shitting it when we lashed in a second, third and fourth against Wrexham?

Decent point at this stage, but we have to be better,we kept giving the ball away to easily again,so sloppy....Norwich looked there for the taking,it could have been 3 points if we could have made more of things in the final 3rd.
Still gelling and getting upto speed fitness wise, but a bit frustrating.

Also a good point considering we didn’t have both our regular CBs playing
