Superb question Fulwood.

My answer would be;

Evans seemed to be found guilty of something I (and possibly he) didn't even know was criminal at the time. (having sex with someone who may have agreed to the act but was then adjudged to have been too drunk to know her own mind)

BUT from what I have read and heard, I concede, by the same token;

Anelka may have been found 'guilty' of something he may not have known was racist when he did it.

So I see your point.......

I may take this post down in a while because too many threads degenerate into Ched Evans debate. Its a bit like that 'law' of the internet about conversations tending towards Naziism which is of course ironical in the context......

It seems as though the thread has caused a few issues with the majority on here - isn't that what debate is about?

As for the morals of certain Blades fans - it is going to be very interesting when a certain Ched Evans comes back on the scene in October.

By the same token he will not be welcomed either then?
Unless some miraculous evidence appears that absolves him from his conviction - not by me NO!

Swiss, come on, every photograph of Anelka doing his salute shows the sponsors name.

We have subsequently learnt that the gesture is anti-Jewish so of course he has to apologise to Zoopla. Aye AND West Brom AND the Baggies but Anelka doesn't know how to.

The notion of United wanting to pay £100K + per week to him is pie in the sky anyway and the political repercussions for an Arab owned club employing someone who casually upsets so many Jews and now Gentiles are obvious.

A good player who should choose his friends with more care.

It's interesting because like in a lot of politics, someone is pulling someone's plonker here:

Anelka stated that 'the gesture isn't anti-Jewish'. The guy who 'invented it' said it isn't 'Anti-Jewish', the media pretty much in unison say it is...and the next thing is the sponsor threaten pull out (wtf?) Anelka has no job and probably has to leave the country.

Someone is lying...and I guess most reckon it's Anelka and his 'comedian pal'.

Think on a little...has anyone read the original intro to Animal Farm?

I shall look up the Animal Farm introduction, if I've ever read it, I don't remember it.

What I did hear on Radio 4 about a month ago was a programme about Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, Anelka's comedian friend. At the time I heard it, it left me in no doubt that the man was anti-jewish.

I agree, it was journalism but at a certain point one has to believe some of what one reads, otherwise we would be in '1984 ' and I don't think we are quite there yet.

I mean, we both agree that Bob Crow and Tony Benn are dead don't we?

I cannot speak for you but I believe the journalists who told me that they were.

Yep, its pretty fucked up world at times....this Dieudonne M'bala M'bala bloke seems to be 'playing the game' as it were and stirring up a hornets nest...perhaps thats the only way he can get people to pay attention to whatever point he is trying to make...I don't know..I guess this whole episode/furore IS the point of his 'joke'..?

As I said, it's all 'politics' and as Anelka comes to the end of his career perhaps thats a direction he will move towards...these peoples have very different, opposing views which Britain has meddled with and tried to influence/shape throughout history...sadly for people who are not ethnically, historically or religiously involved it all seems a little bizarre...and sad...

Regardless of the origins of this gesture, the meaning of it now is clearly anti-jewish.

The swastika has it's origins in ancient India, but it's meaning in the western world is now that of the Nazi Party and every thing associated with that including anti-semitism.

Meanings change over time....

Yes. Clearly it is...because the guy who 'invented said it isn't ...but we all suspect him of being very anti-Jewish' and basically 'taking the piss' with his 'joke'...to bring attention to certain issues.

So, in essence the press has dictated what we all believe.
The FA ruling was that Anelka is not anti-Semitic...it's a tangled web...

Actually we don't have to believe journalists at all on this one, God's gift to comedy is all over youtube®, thing is my French isn't up to the ins and outs of his comments.

But I would say his song aimed at kids 'Shoananas' shoa being hebrew for the holocaust, ananas, french for pineapple, complete with man dancing on stage with a yellow star of David pinned to his chest and a pineapple in his hand is erm..... suggestive.

It suggests to me that his brand of stagecraft wouldn't get him very far on the British comedy circuit.......

I've not watched the bloke and don't think I'd want to..read a bit about him and it seems he started off as a 'controversial' comedian dealing with all types if racial stereotypes and then grew increasingly obsessed with Jews, Holicaust, Israel etc..seems, to a casual onlooker, that he's quite full of hate...

I've just watched an interview of his with Iranian TV and the stupid song, international jewish conspiracy rubbish, Jews responsible for most of the slave-trade (which is a new one on me!) blah, blah though I didn't hear him deny the holocaust. Jew-hating clap-trap, as advertised.

Glad we banned, dieu donné not sure Anelka's quite ready for politics yet.

This is the thing- fcuk the sponsors. They have no contractual relation with the player.

What's next? Player has a shite game so sponsor asks for him to be dropped because he's bad for their rep?

Fans not being allowed to wear the club shirt because they're fat?

Tom cleverly has a petition against him. Perhaps Man U should drop him so he doesn't show the sponsors up

" the sponsors. They have no contractual relation with the player."

I bet they do.

Not directly. He has a responsibility to the club, not sponsors.

I'm not disputing he should apologise to the club and fans, just not the sponsors

Well I support a football club, not a political party. He hasn't killed anybody, he hasn't beat the shit out of anybody and he's a better forward than we have at the moment. If he wouldn't disturb the dressing room, I'd take him until the end of the season.

Ee well Swiss, may be you're right. Who was it said "there is no such thing as bad publicity".

Anyway, I just found out who Zoopla are and what they do. My google search prompted by Zoopla's head of publicity,

Monsieur Nicolas Anelka late of West Bromwich.

Is this serious? Poor attitude, past it regardless of us being in league 1 and he will be on £50,000 a week no exaggeration. Save the money for better players in the summer!

no no no ! i to dont think nige would entertain the thought.........marlon did,nt last long did he, young cloughie had a good upbringing and he seems to know the difference between right and wrong ;) .we dont need tossers like sulky anelka to upset the dressing room and fleecing our club. taxi for anelka !

As of today Anelka is a free agent after terminating his contract with West Brom - he has to stand a 5 game ban - We NEED a striker - come on United, push the boat out, sign him on a short term contract and he would be eligible to play for us from the Leyton Orient game onwards AND therefore the semi

Go on.................

Oh dear oh dear, he'll cart himself off to france hopefully and never be seen again..

A mercinary of the highest order, would bleed us dry...

I would rather but my faith in a young player from the academy and stick with him, rather than go for a big name with a big ego, that used to be a decent player a few years ago.

The sponsors kicked up a fuss because Zoopla's owner is Jewish. I'm Jewish and would feel exactly the same.

Anelka probably isn't anti-Semitic; more and idiot (but we probably knew that judging by his attitude at previous clubs), but his comedian friend most definitely is. Still wouldn't want him near my club if he's willing to make that gesture so publicly.

Yes I'm well aware that the sponsor is Jewish. But my point is about sponsors dictating matters on the pitch. I'm sure the sponsor has also realised the effect that the publicity has had. If you'd asked me before the incident who was west broms sponsor I wouldn't have had a clue. I still don't know what they do.

I agree Anelka should be punished for making the gesture (if it was anti Semitic), I don't agree that sponsors should influence playing matters. It's for the authorities to deal with.

I don't want Anelka or anyone similar. Absolutely not.

I'm interested to know, however, for how long should we put our faith in a young player from the Academy? Chappell years? Ironside years? McFadzean years?

You know, some players just aren't good enough, wherever they originate from, and no amount of wishful thinking will alter that.
