Which set of morons would see Sheffield United as a great investment today, tomorrow or next year? We've been in slow decline for decades with odd blips and flirtations with the top flight which last no more than an eyeblink. Sheffield is an unfashionable town with another strangely more attractive club, it's pretty ardent fanbase divided and therefore non-profitable unlike Manchestoh, who have slowly surfed a baffling popularity wave since 09 Dec 1960 and a epoch-defining soap opera was spawned which has resulted in the Prime Minister of today wanting to rip parliament and all the trappings up and plonk it into a sprawling, seedy pit of crime and swaggering self-awareness. Sheffield just does not cut it against that jovian gravity. The Blades may play at some sort of historic venue but equally baffling is the world's belief that Sheffield Wednesday are more historic and more relevant and investible and to many United are still a blighted club full of dirty fuckers managed by gobshite chancer Harry Warnock or something. We just don't bring in the readies, do we? 'Fit and Proper' gives you a tremendous example of the false horizons we have seen and takes us up to last decade but even past Kevin McCabe, who would sell a decent player at first low offer and invest in semi-plastic pitches rather than centrebacks, we've had HRH scrapping with him in court, an attempt to build on sacred Bramall Lane turf and now a sale to a shower of American carpetbaggers who I am convinced think 'soccer' is just like their version of 'football' (read: fancy-arsed rugby with PPE) and maybe we should have more 'show' and less 'game' and we can recruit using FIFA 26 ratings as a yardstick.
If you had a hundred million of ready sponds to pile into a club, would you take a terminally ill outfit like Sheffield United on with confidence there was a percentage gain in there?
