I think Speed will get the nod tbh.

I think eh could do well. But i think he will need an experienced number 2 to take abit of pressure off.

Venables, Bassett, even Kendall if hes still around?

I hope not. Can't stand him.

i agree about his personality(can't stand his arrogance)BUT didn't he gain two promotions with Hull on a relatively small budget, played reasonable football and kept Hull up in the premiership. Take the personality away....right man for the job ?

OK, well after reading this thread im going to throw a cat amongst the pidgeons and say that, actually, i think Speed would be a very good appointment.

1. Speed is likely to be a media-friendly manager and considering we havent had one of those for many many many years, it would be nice for a change!
2. I think speed is likely to attract players of a high standard because he was a well respected player whom i feel players may feel 'honoured' to play under him.
3. Speed has played at a top level and is likely that he will have plenty of useful training styles to encourage football rather than "so you stand at that end of the pitch and i will kick it to you"
4. Hes young, working his way into football management and we know for a fact he isnt just doing it for a pension scheme.

I say give him a go.

Most of what you've said also applied to Robson. The media loved him.

Taken from article on thesackrace.com "The search will now begin for a replacement to take over at Sheffield United with usual suspects already being linked to the vacancy including current Coach, Gary Speed, Iain Dowie, Chris Coleman and Gareth Southgate".

Ladies & Gentlemen,
SANITY has been restored at BDTBL
I will now renew my ST as soon as possible

A bold statement bearing in mind who we could end up with, Dowie, Megson (who McCabe may have appointed in the past), Brown, Jewell and the rest of the usual suspects. Unless it is linked to something out of McCabe's control he will still have the final say and he was the man who appointed Robson, extended Blackwell's contract and has now sacked him 3 games into the season after having given him the whole Summer to re-build the squad.

Having had a few hours to think about it, today's events don't have McCabe's stamp on them at all, time will tell.

I think it is odd that Speed has not been named as acting mananger so maybe it is true someone is already lined up. Also did you hear that funny business on praise or grumble that Morgan said on leaving the pitch "Not yet" when asked if Blackwell had resigned. Seems like the players knew something???

I've read on here that Speed would be a good choice. I've also read that he wouldn't. How can anyone say either way?

Has Keith Edwards put himself in the frame yet?

I just love these conspiracy theories. Seems to me McCabe said after the crash he had reached his limit. We bring Birch in to find new investment, until then we work within budget. You can't make changes until the deal is done. When the investor commits, the changes can begin. Hope it is a good ride this time. UTB

Speed for me. Give him a short contranct to the end of the seaso and see how it goes. We`ve no money and a small, not so good squad so we can`t expect even the best manager to take us up. Why not give it Speed? We al know it`s a transitional season. The wage bills has gone down, we won`t get relegated so lets see if we can play some football.

If we could attract O`Driscoll then I`d take him over Speed (and maybe Robbins too). But if you were O`Driscoll would you come? Donny hve a better saqud than us, lower expectations (hence he is a god) and a more supportive chairman/board. He`d be mad to join us at the moment.

For me Speed is an easy and obvious choice. A no brainer. If he can`t cut it over a season we can take our time and choose someone better. But for now I`d gve it to him.

That sounds like how Blackwell was hired give him the job ,he ended up with it.Speed has been part of Blackwells staff on the training ground he is part of it.
The same was said of Blackwell as Warnocks sidekick ,I believe The Blades need a manager that knows the division that can put bums on seats Speed doesn't fit that bill risk on an untried Speed is another gamble McCabe needs to get this right not go the easy cheap option route.

Players of a high standard already know that Speed has been here for years he hasn't attracted those players. He is on the training pitch everyday with them don't expect much of a change from him.
Many thought Blackwell was the brilliant mind behind Warnock as well.
If we are serious about promotion we need an experienced manager who knows the division unless you are willing to risk an experiment with an unproven manager.

My choice would be Speedo with a senior mentor Bassett possibly!!!

only managerial experience he has had is with Blackwell. He hasn't had much influence with the team either, it would be cheap as chip replaced by cheaper then chips. I would let him in charge for a few games whilst we look for a good manager (like me ;) ).

Sean O'Driscoll would walk to BDTBL for the job. O'Neil would be too expensive, Curbushley wouldnt come north, but Speed will probably get the job.

blades1889 I like your avatar.

thanks :D

I agree with that viewpoint.
As McCabe is the man in charge of a major company, it is his duty to appoint the best man for the job.
Just like we did when Reg did his best day's work when he brought in Bassett.
When we appointed Warnock I was disappointed (like a lot of fans) but at least he did get is there eventually.
The main reason I was disappointed was that Venables was available at the time. Wishfull thinking on my part I'm sure.
Who is the best man for the job this time ?
For me it can only be Martin O'Neil. Wishful thinking again but who knows, if there is going to be a major invester coming in just maybe we will get the appointment right.
Wishful thinking again I know............................but as the say 'football is a funny old game'.

Allegedly there is going to be some more bung news breaking soon and Mr O'neil might be mentioned within it. . . and Redknapp, but I don't believe that for a second

Has anything been said about Ellis leaving the Club ?
McCabe wouldn't.................................Would he ? Surely not.
I feel ill even thinking about the prospect.

I noticed that there was a space being cleared in the car park for a statue for Ellis

Sean O'Driscoll has to be the man to take the club forward. He has shown that he can use the lower leagues and loans to find players who gel into a footballing team. With a bit more money(?!) and greater pulling power I am sure he would get us promoted within 2 years. If not we would at least be playing the sort of football that would be enjoyed. Why not offer Donny the money they gave us for Sharp to get he in ASAP. I see him as a coach as well, someone who can work with what we already have - which in most cases isn't too bad, no matter what some on here say.

I just hope whoever it is, the decision is made for the right reasons rather than just convenient ones.
I fear the choice will be solely based on convenience. My reckoning is that McCabe will go for Gary Speed. He's someone who "knows the club", is already on a contract that won't need much tweaking, and wants a managerial post - but for us telling them to do one he could be at Swansea now. Will he be the right one? No idea, but probably not.
Alan Curbishley. Now there's a name you don't hear very often. What is he up to nowadays?
Curbishley gets a nose bleed if he goes any further north than Watford Gap services. No thanks. Similarly no thanks to Phil Brown, Paul Jewell, Gary Megson and especially Iain Dowie.
