New Blades or Phoney War?

Anyone out there feeling like me that us getting promoted ahead of the play offs mite have given us a head start getting a few signings in ahead of the play off winners?
And here we are hearing rumours of Villa getting ahead of us with some of our potential targets. It feels to me at least that Chris is being messed about with his budget again and despite us being linked with some of the leading goal scorers in the Championship we are again going to have to settle for less. Add this to the fact that none of our loan players have officially returned yet and the excitement and joy of promotion is again becoming tarnished by the lack of bringing in new blood and now again rumours of a manager not being backed by those above him leaving other ambitious clubs to try to tempt him away.
I don’t think Chris will jump ship but they are not exactly providing him with the support he deserves. Who knows, players & managers are on holiday and this could be delaying things but it seems a bit phoney speculation right now.
Most contracts expire at the end of June.

Most managers and players go on holiday when the season finishes.

Players that are in demand will be assessing their options once they're all on their tables.

Players that are not in demand are not the players we are looking for, unless our scouting team is the best in the land, which based on the last couple of years it might be!

Not even time to worry yet, never mind panic.

Its those players that have been released by their respective clubs we should’ve been snapping up, players like Fer, those of that ilk that will no doubt attract interest from clubs similar to ourselves. We’ve possibly lost the chance and I agree with the sentiments of the posts. It’s going to be very hard for Wilder the longer we leave it, that I have no doubt about.
Those players will want to know what all their options are and it's very unlikely that they will commit to anyone in a rush unless they get a spectacular offer.

Reduced to signing the likes of Norwood,Egan and McGoldrick again - shame.

A budget is a fixed amount of money, not the 'spend whatever you like' approach that many see as being available when it is other people's money from the magic money tree.

A good manager is the difference between wasting £ 15 million on the likes of Jordan Rhodes and signing value for money players (bargains) like the 3 we signed last year.

I'm afraid your post reads likes those on Pork Talk.

I suspect it must have. You wrote very eloquently but spoiled it all for me, by putting "mite" instead of "might". You can get away with "mite" if you are playing Scrabble, although you may need to explain, as some folks are too thick to understand, that it is a collective term for a group of arthropods belonging to the arachnida class, in the subclass acari. However, you can't get away with it on here. Some pedantic twat will be on your case like a rattus norvegicus up a drainpipe.

Requires a tick rather than a like.

This seems the closest available 🦟

Not sure why last years signings are brought into it. The main point I was making was the phoney paper talk this summer and false media stuff being produced.
Never read any Wed forums by the way...

That philosophy worked wonders for Fulham.

I'm glad Chris Wilder is in charge.

We signed more than 8 players last summer.

With Chris Wilder in charge.

That worked out alright.

This 'Fulham' argument is getting very tiresome.

Wait and see how many we bring in - I suspect you'll be horrified....

No argument it's fact.

Though there are examples of teams that spend £100 million on players and are successful.

We do not have that sort of money to spend though even if we wished it so.

Stop fretting sir. If you've nothing better to do than chew your nails I suggest that you take a holiday and reflect that since CW started in management he has never had a season worse than the one before and that goes for all his clubs. I feel that good times lie ahead leave it to Wilder and Knill.

OK, who are the 8 players we need? Who will they replace? How will they improve the squad?

How much will they cost? What sort of wage demands will they have?

Why 8?....not 10?

He’s not going down Waitrose, no, sorry, Aldi, with a trolley...

Never mind who we've signed, I need to know if Wednesday are laughing at us because we haven't spent anything yet.

Because they were bought as part of last years agreed budget. A budget agreed despite the 2 owners not being the best of friends.
Similarly this years budget will have already been decided, I suspect possibly £ 20-30 million what Chris decides to spend is up to him (within that budget).

Chris has stated that he would never put the club in danger.

He has a different philosophy to many who see spend spend spend as the only option in life.

Agreed, remove whatever cost.

Bringing in 8 new players runs a strong risk of destroying the 'team spirit'.

Fulham did both hence the £ link.

The concept is foolish on both counts IMO.

I can't believe how many people can't grasp this numbers thing.

We currently have a squad of about 15 who we intend to retain.

The PL squad limit is 25 and Wilder has spoken of wanting to get towards that number.

Wilder has previously made a large number of signings every summer.

Now, positions.....

GK - We need at least 1, probably 2
RWB/LWB - At least 1, possibly 2 - replacing Johnson
CB - At least 2 - replacing Cranie plus 1 additional
CM - At least 1 - replacing Coutts
AM - At least 1 - replacing Dowell
CF - At least 2 - replacing Madine and Hogan

That's at least 8 in total.

People who expect only 4 or 5 signings haven't thought about it at all.

Agreed. Wise spending ahead required not from Viv Nicholson’s model...

I’m pretty sure that 8 signings @ £10 million = £80 million, so that’s out, so on the basis that any player you sign must improve the squad, £1 million players are out as well because our squad is already past that point now.

Quality, not quantity is the issue - 4 or 5 signings @ £8/10 million = £30/£50 million, are they on CW’s list, I don’t know who they might be, do you?

Expect 1 or 2 free transfers, as well as a guaranteed 2 on loan.

That reduces the spend requirement straightaway.

Then there's about 5 to spend in the region of £30m on.

I expect one signing £10m or above, ideally McBurnie. Then the remaining 4 average around £5m each.

One thing we'll do is look for players with only a year left on their contracts, as that reduces their value.

That’s more like it, spot on...👍

More importantly the number of loan players is a maximum of 2.

I'm not including the re-loan or purchase of Dean Henderson and others as a new signing merely a change of contract, so we are both in agreement.

Those players will want to know what all their options are and it's very unlikely that they will commit to anyone in a rush unless they get a spectacular offer.
On the flip side of that, if they wait too long they might not get an offer as good as ours or someone else who tries to bring someone in early or even one at all, although I do know this is highly unlikely.

We could sign absolutely no-one and still comply with PL regulations.

We have a whole academy full of professional footballers that we could register.

Also, the transfer listed players are exactly that, until they're shown the door.

Be careful of what you accuse people of, it so often can come to bite you on the arse.
