Clough didn't retain him. It was widely stated that his contract had a year option that either the club or the player could invoke and I believe Collins took it.
Fair point. Clough's mistake was not about extending the deal, not about falling out with him, it was all about the consequence of leaving us woefully exposed at the back for a whole season, whilst signing player after player in positions we didn't need.

If he is going to the MLS makes sense for him to move now, during the first week of their season, he could step straight into one of their teams and be upto speed.

It seem like an odd place for him to go (if this is actually true, that is), does he have a connection with any of the managers of there?

A quick check on Wikipedia shows there are 3 UK managers in the MLS: Owen Coyle, Carl Robinson and Adrian Heath (!).

Carl Robinson was at Sunderland at the same time as Collins.

I agree that Clough's two main issues were his penchant for an injury prone player and his failure to address the centre half problem. But on the second I think he had mitigating circumstances.

Maguire was sold against his wishes. Then he shipped out Butler and dropped Collins. Both of who had been god awful in pre season and then Collins ignored instructions. He tried to address it by bringing in a supposed leader in McCarthy who on paper was a decent signing but actually was another crock and a pile of shite. He then went with Jay Mac and Bash at centre half and they did well through December into January. I still think he should have strengthened in this area but around that time most on here were very happy with Bash and McEverley at centre half until McEverley had an awful run of form.

I think ultimately Cloughs signings cost him but his ability to get the best out of the players (Flynn, Murphy, Doyle, Brayford, Baxter and Harris as examples) plus the fact that he knew where we needed strengthening meant he should have been given till Christmas at least.

The way Phipps hung him out to dry in his statement considering where the club were when he took over and where he left it (with two cup semi's from division 3 chucked in) lost him all respect for me.

No wonder the players are spineless fuckers with no sense of responsibility given the attitude of their superiors.

Doesn't matter if Collins knows anyone over there.......as long as his agent does.
If he is leaving....question is, has he been got rid of, or did he ask to leave because a MLS offer was on the table now...wait to the end of season and the offer might have gone.

He could be linking up with the great Jordan Stewart at San Jose Earthquakes.

I couldn't give a flying fuck if he's gone - the first one I'd have culled

They are spineless, because they are spineless, not because of their superiors attitude. If they can't show any desire and bottle for a fight it's because that's the sort of player / personality they are.

Also that he let McCarthy just show up on match days and not train with the squad. McCarthy might have done OK for us had he not been allowed to arrive here on his terms.

And that's why we are trying to stay out of the play offs.

You've lost me!??

It all a plan to get shut of 12-14 players who can't extend their contracts if we don't get a seat in the play-offs.

Then after they have all fucked off Mr CV weaves his magic and this time next season we are 6 points clear and even William can't keep up with everyone's positivity.

It's the only explanation.

As pleased as I was with the appointment of Adkins, and as bored and disappointed I was with events under Clough, and despite never wanting him in the first place, I still was prepared to give it until Christmas.

It's become very clear that in a mountain of utter shite, the most steaming, enormous lump of that shite is the premature sacking of managers.

Which may well prove to be Adkins saving grace. However utterly terrible he has been.

The existing ones, our division and the one below. 3 and 4 in old money.

If true im glad because that what has done us since danny wilson has left that we got a bunch of players that can only be motivated by cup games take man utd the most solid ive them all season but are carved open at ease 4 times by Shrewsbury. & some of our best recent signings are ones from equal level or below like done adams baxter JCR
-----------
& if Collins has gone probably good because back in aug/sept that Collins is a good squad defender to cover injuries in 1 offs but asking a 30 odd players rusty after a year exile to be the 1st choice playing 40/50 games a season is asking for trouble

Very true and, in my view a good summary with regards to the Centre Half issue. However, I don’t think that the centre half issue was so much of a problem until we lost the likes of Kennedy and then Brayford to injury. We kind of ‘got by’ before that.

The biggest concern, though was a main striker. But again, Clough was hung out to dry on this as well, but it seems that its not so easy to get a 20 goal a season man as Phipps et al thought. Billy Sharp, whilst good, hasn’t returned the goals you’d want/ need/ expect him to. His return is good, all things considered, but not sparkling (although as I said last week, he’s not had the supply nor the support up front)

I didn’t get one point though, with regards to Cloughs signings, the examples given weren’t all signed by Clough – Flynn(I think), Doyle and Baxter were signed before clough arrived

Yup that was me not making myself clear. I think his signings cost him in the end as we ended up with a bloated squad of injury prone players - though again, in mitigation had the board pushed the boat out for original targets then second choices and make do's (like Wallace, Higdon, Alcock etc.) need not have been signed.

I then meant that seperate to his signings, Cloughs greatest strength was his ability to get the best out of his starting XI, whether they were his signings or not. The turn around in form of Flynn and Murphy especially was remarkable, two players who were struggling before he joined.

There were many, many displays contrary to that last season.

So long as it isn't to Orlando City or Montreal Impact I don't mind. Booked tickets to see them play in May when I'm in the US and if I have to see Neill Collins play I'll be fucking livid.
I'm seeing Montreal when I'm in Canada, got tickets booked - you just know what's gonna happen...
