We need to play 442 which doesnt suit Doyle as he is not a box to box midfielder
I'd agree he's less suited to 442 and looks uncomfortable these days in that format.
However, 442 is as outdated as the W formation today. To play it is to condemn yourself to being overrun and embarrassed.
To accomodate O' Grady & McNulty is more the problem to be solved rather than looking to eject this seasons lynchpin at this stage.
Its Doyle's last season with us, that's obvious, but he is one of the last to be held responsible for poor results lately.
People lash out at him for the sake of it.

I don't think anyone is lashing out on him at all. I am certainly not. I totally agree with you about formations, nobody was complaining about Doyle and the formation when we smashed Southampton's back doors in. I feel and so do other by the sound of it, that he can't play in a 442 which limits us to any changes mid game, which very rarely happen anyway.

Doyle needs an engine running alongside him, ala Coady. You don't need hindsight to know that they worked well together and was a big loss this season. Basham is now a CB and was never a midfielder, while Wallace was always going to have injury concerns. Just madness and it still enrages me to the same degree as it did they day he signed for Huddersfield.

However, because we have moved on from that and because we have Reed and Cuvellier coming through, It will be Doyle who becomes the fall guy.

I can't believe how many would stick which cloughs 1 striker option this team is crying out for 4-4-2. based on current squad if fully fit i'd go for

......................................Howard........................................

Davies..............Basham............McEverly..............Harris

Cuvellier...........Doyle...............Scougall.............Murphy

........................McNulty............Higdon/O'Grady.............

Subs
JCR
Flynn
Adams
Baxter
Wallace
Turner

Ask a few to find new homes off the wage bill and bring in a good striker, i have said Hidgon/O'Grady as i am not sure how long O'Grady will be here for. I am guessing if he goes back we will get a new forward therefore i would put Higdon on the bench, i do think we need 2 forwards on the pitch ideally i big lad and a finisher. I honestly believe given the chance Higdon would support McNulty well though.

Me and you have debated Doyle enough in the past and credit to you for reassessing his performances this season and recognising his contribution.
Some still like a dig at him on here despite this seasons form.
I agree that Doyle needs a certain type either side of him to be effective. I don't see Cuvelier crafting a place in the midfield thus far, though i may be being unkind to him as his fitness is not yet there, but he just doesnt do it for me at this juncture.
Talking of box to box midfielders and this 442 malarkey, who do you think has the tools for the job in the middle two?
If pushed, I'd say Basham & Scougall, both have good engines, can defend, get up ahead of the strikers and good attitudes.
However, Bash is, it appears, too valuable at the back and Scoogs is but a pale shadow of last seasons version.

-Long-
-Flynn - Basham- Colins- Harris
- Doyle-
-Davis - Reed - Murphy
- O'Grady-
-McNaulty-

-McEvely-
-McGahey-
-Wallace-
-Cuvelier-
-Scougall-
-Baxter-
-Higdon-

That would likely be my team, a mix of experience and youth, hard call with Howard or Long I do like them both, and I would have Reed and Cuvelier alternate throughout the season. Main thing about the line up is two attackers!

I agree 442 is outdated but we are struggling to score in the league and I do feel playing a system to accommodate Doyle is part of the problem when playing against weaker teams at home.

4-4-1-1

Howard
Freeman Basham mceveley Harris
Transfer deadline target transfer deadline target Coady Murphy
Baxter

Probably the team Clough would have like to be playing right now as well.....
Do you not read? it says work with what NC has to.

Howard
Flynn Basham McCevely Harris
Davies Cuvelier Wallace Murphy
McNulty O Grady

But I would belatedly sign replacements for Brayford, Maguire and Coady's positions with the best quality we can attract.

I think that's a little unfair tbh.
Doyle hasn't been as bad as last season but he's been consistently average, as have a few others. Baxter, Higdon and Scougal have been worse and have been ineffective in this Division. That is NC's problem ...... too many of his players are good enough on paper, but when the action starts they are simply not effective !!
