More Budget Cuts

McCabe's own line was that it was dependant on premiership status. I hope he sticks to it. UTB

IF England get selected and Sheffield is chosen and Bramall Lane gets the nod over Hillsborough. There is no way that United would (or IMHO should) pull out at the last minute pleading poverty.

Can you imagine the reaction!?

So pull out now, because based on us having to be an "established premiership club" it just doesn't and cannot make sense in time, IMHO. What's more, I don't care about the reaction (everyone hates us anyway, I quite like it :) ), I care about decades of debt and an at best half empty, soulless stadium.

UTB

Absolutely. What good is having World Cup matches really going to do us? It'd be nice, as an extra, but it's not what the club is there for. If we can reach our primary targets, by all means get the secondary ones in. Until they're met, forget all this nonsense about World Cup bids and stadium expansions.

I partly meant imagine the reaction from our own fans ;-)

For what it's worth, I don't think England will get chosen for 2018 anyway. It's not Europe's turn!

The World Cup is merely a four yearly distraction from those summer jobs like decorating and gardening that wives like to force upon us, and that's about it. I don't really give a monkey's if England win it next year or not, and I certainly don't care whether Bramall Lane gets to host Cameroon against Peru or not. Three matches featuring countries I'm not from don't interest me in the slightest, and I can't see how that will benefit United at all.

Len - when you say the hotel is the club's are you saying the freehold is an asset in the books of SUFC Ltd?

I'm confused why the word freehold is being bandied about.
I don't think it's ever been suggested that Bramall Lane, the hotel, enterprise centre etc aren't owned by SUFC.
You could look them up on the land registry if you're that concerned but is there a reason why 'freehold' is suddenly being mentioned?

I remember someone actually doing this recently and posting the results somewhere on here.

The Land Registry .......useless !

There's a reight lot of sneaky ways of hiding ultimate ownership of freeholds.

Are there? The ownership has to be registered with the Land Registry, as far as I know it's a legal requirement.
Charges ie mortgages/loans etc or other pertinent info as regards ownership also have to be registered.

Thats true............

I think it is possible for Scarborough, for example, to own a freehold and for SUFC Ltd to receive the annual rental income from Copthorne.

Quite possibly but Scarborough's ownership would be on the land registry and quite probably the remainder.

Yes, true.

I'm losing my thought processes big style but what I think I'm getting at is if Copthorne said 'rather than pay you an annual fee we'll buy the property for a figure you'll find hard to decline' who, in that situation would get the cash? SUFC or a McCabe spin-off vehicle of some sort?

I think alot of Blades think we could sell the hotel like we could any player and 'bank' the wedge - and I don't think that is the case, but nothing to substantiate it of course.

Whoever owns the hotel would get the money.
I'd like to think that we still have enough board members with the club at heart who are keeping an eye on what's going on.

hey up ............ i've had a couple of beers but i'm sure i'm reight when i say Copthorne have a long term lease on the hotel wi McCabe retaining the freehold .... IF the hard to decline offer was accepted SUFC wud get the ££££'s for about 5 seconds then it wud be off to McCabes coffers faster than a gypsies dog.

Totally agreed - re-assuring to see Andrew Laver on the list (plc) - even though he has recent experience of how to turn a patch of land on Bramall Lane into apartments!

I must stress I am not for one minute suggesting there is any impropriety going on and McCabe is entitled to shift his assets around the group as he sees fit so the current ownership is meaningless. The hotel is easily the best all round of the developments and other interests for me.

McCabes a reight shrewd businessman whom i admire.

My gripe wi him is on the footballing side where he likes to 'spin' :D it too much for my liking.

Tell it as it is McCabe .... we can take it were Blades.

According to the YP today, the wage budget is due to be cut by a further 40% next season to around £6M, on a par with our local 'rivals', just about the lowest in the Division.

We've debated to death ambition and finances but it would be difficult for McCabe to come out and seriously convince people that we are serious about promotion in the next few seasons unless there's any new investment coming in.

I can appreciate the financial climate and the well being of the club as a whole but to me, it just seems like we had a real chance to establish ourselves, it went wrong, and we are now resigned to being a well run Championship club. What worries me is how many of the 25,000 current faithful will remain that satisfied.

denied by McCabe...see official site

a few worrying things in that article;

-We did pay £3M for Evans
-He's one of the highest paid players outside the premiership
-The talk of investment in players with no mention of sales.

A) Evans is looking like one of the worse buys in our history. But let's give him time......:-(

B) Kev - stop spinning. We haven't invested, we've sold assets. I can deal with that. Just tell it how it is.

UTB

Another worrying thing about that article...Alan Biggs is a respected national and local journalist. He wouldn't have simply made those figures up, so a "Senior insider" fed them to him. If wasn't McCabe, the only other options are:-

a) One of the other directors
b) Blackwell or one of his staff

Either way, it sounds like there's a rift in the camp!
