With the luck of the Irish
If you work in the public sector – as a firefighter or nurse, say, or as an MP or a junior doctor – everyone knows exactly how much you earn.
This seems very healthy to me. Why should footballers and anyone else in the private sector be any different?
One of the causes of so much inequality and unfairness in this society is ignorance – you don't know whether the person working next to you is being paid more, less or the same.
This leads to resentment between employees, and employers use it to keep wages down. This is how they have got away with taking on new people at wages far below the people they are replacing. Meanwhile the top people's pay has soared.
If everyone's income was common knowledge, there would be more efforts to make the pay structure fair as well as transparent.
In the US, people's tax returns are published online. Should be the same here.
From this point of view, if footballers' incomes are common knowledge, they are setting an example to the rest of us.
So, how much do you earn?
