If you work in the public sector – as a firefighter or nurse, say, or as an MP or a junior doctor – everyone knows exactly how much you earn.
This seems very healthy to me. Why should footballers and anyone else in the private sector be any different?
One of the causes of so much inequality and unfairness in this society is ignorance – you don't know whether the person working next to you is being paid more, less or the same.
This leads to resentment between employees, and employers use it to keep wages down. This is how they have got away with taking on new people at wages far below the people they are replacing. Meanwhile the top people's pay has soared.
If everyone's income was common knowledge, there would be more efforts to make the pay structure fair as well as transparent.
In the US, people's tax returns are published online. Should be the same here.
From this point of view, if footballers' incomes are common knowledge, they are setting an example to the rest of us.

So, how much do you earn?

If you'd been around a bit longer, you'd know that isn't sitters' style. You can construe that as an attempt at arse-licking, it really doesn't matter. I reckon I've been on the same boards as him (and plenty of others that you've fallen out with) for about 15 years, though we've never met.

You did indeed post about the win, I can't find it now, but the first sentence was "Sounded really poor today", followed by a second post criticising Adkins. Plus ca change.
Why would I have posted that if it wasn't true ,what sort of mentality does he have to think I would ? Desperate for attention springs to mind ,but he is the type of person who puts people off coming on here.He simply has nothing to offer except conflict. Ive had fall outs with Pommpey and many more on here before ,but they are all OK and just have different opinions ,this guy has nothing.

I remember when I very first came on ,you were the first person to respond to me ,I was still playing I think and we had a mutual friend in Mathew Bell ? I will get you a drink one day Trig :)

All about opinions. :)

Our performances have certainly been erratic, often in the same game!
As others have mentioned Adkns has changed our style since the early games and we're starting to see some good bits ( Bradford, particularly)

I would suggest our 'convincing' victories have been against teams in a bit of turmoil, Peterborough, Swindon...Fleetwood maybe?
Some were not so convincing..Chessy, Donny even Blackpool..

I dunno, obviously Adkins see's a lot of good qualities in the bloke and fan's are seeing better performances on the pitch ( after too long really)

Let's hope we keep getting better and get a lot more points on the board than the first half of the season.

UTB!

or perhaps Coco hasn't got a fuckin clue?

Cheers. That explains it. So, if someone has access to said salary in, say, a payroll system and makes it public without the employees agreement, is that a breach?

Yes usually it would be as it all depends on what usage has been registered for the payroll data. I can't envisage it ever being registered to "let anyone know what salaries people earn".

Or perhaps Adkins has come in and inherited an expensive squad of players packed to the rafters with journeymen, which have left him with little room for manouvere in the transfer market.

Yesterday we only fielded 3 players who were brought in by Adkins in Woolford, Edgar and Sharp.

Effectively what I have seen so far of Adkins is a manager who has had to try and build a team out of what he has already had in a pre-existing squad, and a squad that in truth wasn't that good.

After 6 months in charge so far we have seen Nigel Adkins give a lot of players an opportunity and finally find a settled side, and also begin to start wielding the axe with moving a few players out of the club, which also will have the long term benefit of giving him more scope to operate in the transfer market when the squad gets reduced further.

As for the other players the OP mentions. Terry Kennedy has been here for years, there looks to be a cracking player in there but unfortunately his career has been decimated by injury to the extent it is highly unlikely we will get a dozen games out of him per season, it's unfortunate but that is also football. As for Kieron Wallace, he still looks young and very raw, and although he had a few good games in an alien position to him earlier on this season, he isn't ready to be a first team regular just yet.

You don't have to a be a genius to see what Adkins is going, or see some gradual improvements beginning to be made. Just for the record I think this season we will finish somewhere between 6th and 10th, and next season under Adkins we will be a lot better, and it would be surprised if we don't nail automatic next season.

Great post.

I think at the start of the season when Adkins stated 'everyone will get a chance' he didn't really have much choice in that...It's only now with a lot of the contracts up in the summer that some of the players are thinking, I'd better get off me arse and find a club for next season...

I think a former player said it's very easy to sit in the background/bench (on a decent contract...) at a club like Sheffield United.

A fair question which I cannot answer because unless and until my employer publishes details of everyone's salary, which I would support, it would just cause trouble.
My union, the NUJ, has been pressing for transparency over pay for years and we did succeed in persuading the company to agree minimum rates, which are published, as a first step on the road to transparency.
Bit of a way from SUFC but to get back to the thread, if players' wages are published publicly, good – just like doctors, police, etc already are.

Are GPs (Doctors) salaries and bonuses really published publicly? If so, where can I find them because there is a specific GP I'm interested in seeing her/his earnings over the last few years.

We'd played 19 games before Brayford returned v. Barnsley (away) on 28th November. In those games, we collected 26 points so 26 ÷ 19 = 1.37 ppg. (points per game)

We've played 7 games since JB's return and amassed 14 points so 14 ÷ 7 = 2 ppg.

Six of these games were with a Brayford + Coutts lineup (Wigan away last week was the one Coutts missed.) so, in the six games where Brayford partnered Coutts, we've got 13 points so 13 ÷ 6 = 2.17 pwBdpC (points where Brayford didn't partner Coutts :D)

When Brayford returned, we were 12th place. Now we're 7th.

Cheers for that. So case proved albeit small number of games. Perhaps easier for NA to change to a tighter system when better players are fit. On that average we'd be top 4 easy. Afraid I'm struggling to see top 4 at end of season for us ,carrying 2 point average on from now, as current top 4 don't all look like imploding !

Knowing what everybody me earns is normal in parts of the public sector which get paid based on years, and using a formula (hardly ever linked to actual performance).

For me, it's actually the reason the public sector is often so non productive, and definitely not an example to follow. My wife is a nurse, for context here.

The ability to pay people differently but not have to gain an okay from the masses drives productivity.

GPs surgeries a are actually businesses that get paid by the NHS based on a number of factors such as the number of patients they have, and the treatments they offer.

As such, most GPs are partners in a business and are paid based on the productivity of that business. They also employ salaried GPs from the businesses turnover, who are paid according to market forces in order to gain their emplyment (on average about 80k).

Oh stop it, there'll be accusations of fawning and sycophancy. I've met a few from here and various earlier incarnations and they've all been fun. Highlights were Bert getting us tickets for the home end at West Brom from a soon to be ex-supplier, being the oldest by some way when the Internet Blades Legends beat the young pretenders 3-2 the day after I got back from being stuck in China after the ash cloud and being voted runner up one year in the Honorary London Blade poll. The winner was female and I reckon it was a fix.

I really only see Matt at away games and I always seem to owe him for a subscription to Flashing Blade, not sure how that keeps happening...

80k to tell 50 people a day to take some Ibroprofen and rest for a few days.

Same with Matt ,although nearly ever away game I seem to see him. Bert got me a ticket for Utd at the piggery ,next to him ,a very nice bloke he is too. LSF is similar to you we have close mutual friends but haven't met. My accountant is on here and I briefly met Greenwich at Forest once. Went to see the sex pistols with some of the London lot but that was mainly from Steps site ,don't know if some are still on here. Met other ones briefly with tickets and know Robby Blade quite well ,oh and Boo ,both good guys. And of course Foxy ,Silverfox and Linz. Sure ive missed someone out but hello to anyone else that knows me :)
Born on Shoreham st ,how could I forget you and Bartman ,very briefly at Orient.

Meeting Greenwich briefly is the best way in my view :-)

Going back a good few years and I can't even remember if it was in the VP or BU days, but the messageboard did a deal with the club for a cut price corporate day in the JSS, suits and ties, the lot. I went with Trig Jnr (TY) and met Musical, Soho, Wapping, Pommpey (plus Mrs Pommpey, more later), and others too numerous to mention, plus I can't remember the names.....

One of the features was a quiz, one entry per table. The only question I remember now was a picture question and it was Peter Nicol the squash player, which I suspect not many people knew, so it may have been the crucial winning point. Anyway, our table won the quiz and Kevin Gage who was compering, gave the prize a bit of a build up and looked shocked when he revealed it was a signed copy of Greenwich's book, and was greeted by groans from the entire table, mainly LBs, saying they didn't want it, could we have the second prize instead :-) They'd lived and breathed the book's birth, Musical had even got it published, the whole thing was one of those you couldn't make it up funny moments.

I'm fairly sure the book ended up with Mrs Pommpey and when she found out I'd once given Greenwich a lift and therefore had a name check in the book, asked me to autograph that particular page, which of course I nobly did.

The last I knew, Greenwich still had copies, I'm sure he'll confirm. I gave a copy to my Burnley supporting mate at the time and he reckoned you didn't need to be a Blade to enjoy it, so it'd suit plenty on here :-)

Id like a copy ,I follow his blog on facebook and its very good ,and he comes from just down the road from me :)

I was on a table with you, Musical, his Dad and my son. Can't remember the match either although I think it was a SUFC special offer..

I do know this but cant say how ,but his basic at Leicester was 88k a month. All footballers get paid monthly ,some are so thick they couldn't divide it by 4 to tell you their weekly wage ,then of course there are all the bonus's etc ,though I doubt Hammond was seeing any of those. Havent got a clue what we are paying him ,I would guess about 10 but that's just a guess. I am always sceptical when ITKers say what they are earning a week. Luton Shelton was knocking off my secretary when he was at Utd and showed his wage slips off to her ,they were monthly (the wage slips).
88k per month!! even Swiss isn't on that.. on second thoughts i could be wrong though :D
