Didn't realise he was at Oakwell on Saturday.

BLADES MONITORING VERRIPS BATTLE
Sheffield United
are continuing to monitor a legal battle in Belgium before making any potential move for Mechelen goalkeeper Michael Verrips.
The Belgian cup winner is in the UK and sat in the stands at Oakwell on Saturday as United beat Barnsley 4-1 in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
Lawyers acting on behalf of the Dutch-born keeper, believe his contract is now null and void after Mechelen club directors were found guilty of match-fixing.
In a statement last week, Verrips confirmed he believed he was now a free agent: “Under Belgian law I am now a player who is free to join any club.”
With just ten days of the summer window remaining, manager Chris Wilder will be keen to strengthen competition for the No 1 jersey following the return on loan of Dean Henderson.
However, Mechelen believe the player remains theirs – and that any club signing him risks a future transfer ban.

If he'd been in with the match fixing the pigs would have signed him instead.

Surely, considering he's been with us for fecking ages and we've signed him today, the lawyers and the PL have had a good look at it and decided "be reyt".

Surely, Shirley... Wilder and co wouldn't risk a transfer ban for this deal?

Is it just bitter fans and club after the way they've gone about the deal? He wanted to play top flight, found a way out of his remaining 2 years and BOOM, stabbed everyone in the back for it 😂

That's football..

No agreement with Sheffield Utd

There's has not been an agreement with Sheffield Utd nor with Michael Verrips on a transfer. Sheffield Utd made an offer on Wednesday, but retracted the offer on Thursday. KV Mechelen has not released Michael Verrips and are reporting it to FIFA.

I'm not 100% clued on this but surely the selling club (or the club that last held the players registration) have to sign the player over to the new club?

NO AGREEMENT WITH SHEFFIELD UNITED ABOUT VERRIPS

No agreement was found with Michaël Verrips nor with Sheffield United on a correct transfer of the goalkeeper. KV Mechelen takes the necessary steps against the unilateral termination of the contract by Verrips.

In recent days, KV Mechelen wanted to offer Michaël Verrips the opportunity to reach an agreement and work out a correct transfer to Sheffield United. After many promises from the entourage of Michaël Verrips, KV Mechelen only received a concrete offer from Sheffield United on Wednesday evening, one day before the closing of the incoming transfer market in the Premier League.

Despite contacts with Sheffield United, the English club suddenly withdrew the bid on Thursday afternoon to announce it a few hours later as an incoming transfer from a free player.

STEPS AT FIFA
Michaël Verrips unilaterally broke his agreement with KV Mechelen. Malinwa obviously does not agree with that.

“A transfer from Michaël has always been negotiable, but his entourage wants to get out of the transfer fee. We therefore take the necessary steps at FIFA. "

I can't imagine the club won't have had lawyers look over this on thoroughly. A few people on twitter suggesting, he was within his rights to terminate the contract?

They say the transfer was negotiable. Well surely we would just negotiate with them if a fee needed to be paid? We surely wouldn't risk this sort of thing for a guy who I can't imagine would be hugely expensive?

Have we ever had a court visit regarding ya fielding an player illegally? To be fair this is quite an exciting one.

Slightly off tangent;
Been mentioned a few times that Henderson won't (be allowed to) play against Manure - whilst accepting that such is an 'usual' stipulation for loanees re their 'parent' club, has this been confirmed / stated anywhere ?

There's some pretty interesting comments on their twitter post for anybody interested/with twitter.

If he says he's a free agent, his lawyers say he's a free agent, our lawyers are satisfied he's a free agent, and the league are satisfied he's a free agent, then I'm sure we were well within our rights to sign the bloke.

I fully expect an 18 month transfer ban 😂

League rules, not a club stipulation.

Definitely won't be playing against Man U.

The icing on the cake after a great window lol

What he lacks in shoulder width, he makes up for in finger length.

All joking aside i’m quite intrigued by this one. From what we’ve seen he looks to be a decent shot stopper which is the hardest thing for any keeper. Get a bit of beef on him, get him used to the English game, swap the Margarita for a Peroni and we might have got one here.
