My mate's dad was best friends with Michael Palin at school and uni and they were both Wednesday fans. He seems to bend with the wind now, which is very 'London'.

My dad, a lifelong Blade now in his 80s, used to go to Wednesday games when we were away because he enjoyed watching football. I bought him a blue and white striped umbrella once and he refused to use it.
Could start a whole new thread there Robbz regarding refusing to use, wear blue and white articles !!

I won’t eat penguin biscuits with the blue wrapper and won’t use a blue/white straw 🤣🤣. When we went to Blackpool pleasure beach in the 70’s, we used to go on the ride called ‘the whip’ and we had to wait until the number ‘10’ seat? became empty/available before we could go on it 😃👍🏻⚔️

Palin would no doubt say the same about Wednesday:)

He was recently interviewed on Radio Sheffield and explained that his uncle took him to the Lane as a 10 year old boy...then he later used to regularly go to Bramall Lane with his school mates. However he also admitted that as an adult his focus changed more towards supporting his local club Hallam FC.

He also explained that he spends plenty of time outside the city, mainly in London and still feels a strong bond towards his home town of Sheffield.

So said he genuinely wants BOTH Sheffield teams to do well as this helps promote the reputation of the city.

Someone should tell Palin that the pigs in the PL wouldn't 'promote' the reputation of the city. It would be more likely to besmirch it.

Can you imagine the Rust Bucket getting global exposure? 'Chansiri' and 'D-Taxis' plastered everywhere. Strange cult-like ceremonies before kick-off. Pissed up Tango with his shirt off. The Wednesday band. The 'Ulras'. Golden fucking elephants?.

It may be Palin's wish but it's not mine

There's also a clip of him in that same series phoning home to find out United's result. He explains his allegiances clearly in his diaries. He even devotes a page explaining that to many people in Sheffield his support of both clubs now he has left Sheffield is worthy of beheading. He says his heart has always been with United.

His diaries are full of visits to watch both United and Wednesday when they played in London. Expresses his disappointment at seeing United slide down the leagues in the late seventies. Also recounts going to watch us against Chelsea in the early seventies with Bill Oddie!

All these diary entries were obviously written at the time. I don't know why people still question his allegiances when he himself has made it clear.

He’s no Blade.

He was born in May 1943 so that will mean his first match at the Lane was during the 1953-54 season. He started attending boarding school (Shrewsbury) after leaving Birkdale when he was 13. Started Oxford University in 1962 so I assume he went to the Lane more often in the mid 1950s?

My Uncle, who basically introduced me to football, was a staunch Wednesday fan, but was one of the old school who went to watch both of them.

He actually took me to a few Wednesday matches first, the first one being IIRC Wednesday vs Wrexham circa 1978. Wrexham had Dai Davies in goal who has recently passed away.

But once my Uncle took me to the Lane, I was decided. It's like meeting the love of your life, you just know, and nothing or nobody else can ever change that.

Your mates dad must have been at Birkdale School at Broomhill.
Of no consequence really, just a way in to say how much I enjoyed your anecdote of your father and the umbrella.
A classic reaction and story, also the reason for the like.
Thanks.

I've only been to Hillsborough once and that was to watch them play Wolves (I used to live with a Wolves fan). They gave us tickets wildly apart and I was sat the wrong side of some lad who seemed to be attempting to eat Sheffield out of junk food. Lots of wannabee thugs in the away end.

I actually used to go an see Chesterfield play with a group of Wednesdayite mates when we were both away. Simply because it was cheap and you could stand. The era of Kevin Davies and Nicky Law. It's far too expensive to do that now. Hallam is fairly pricey considering.

Unless you're a child under 10 that is beyond pathetic.

The Great Escape 😉

Our Michael is very old School in that he has an affiliation to one club, but likes to see Sheffield as a city doing well. I know plenty of my dad's generation who followed United but would go to the Rustadome as well and would be happy that the Grubsters won.

Years ago (20 years) I used to work with a bloke that used to watch either us or the pigs depending on who was at home that week in the 60s and early 70s

He said it was a pretty common occurrence until football hooliganism kind of made you chose a faction.

I think location might play a part. My dad was only 5 years younger than Palin but had a visceral hatred for Wednesday all his life. Being from Parson Cross he was in a minority of Blades, likewise for me being from Wincobank/Shiregreen. You get bombarded with Piggy propaganda every day so you develop a siege mentality.
i was brought up in s5 and although obviously outnumbered there was plenty of blades on the cross and southey in the 60s and 70s buses were always packed going back up the moor to both those estates shirecliffe as well

yeah happened regular in the 60s whichever sheffield club was at home on the saturday we went to the game always on kop at hillsborough mind always hoped wednesday would get beat while keeping an eye on the guy putting our score up on the white wall of their north stand

I'm 70 and apart from blue clothes like jeans and shirts oh yes and blueberries, I won't have owt blue if I can help it.

No blue toothbrushes, no blue decor in the house, no blue cars and so on.

I was born with blue eyes but had the blue bit drilled out and replaced with a less-offensive colour!

Perfectly reasonable behaviour IMO - unless you're a cynic ..... ;)

(I lied about the eyes, they weren't blue ;) )

I've said this a million times before, but football fans are utterly baffling in their constant judgement about how much other people happen to enjoy a product.

Imagine going to a supermarket and bellowing at the other shoppers because they don't like carrots as much as you do.

I regularly stand beside the Sprout section in Sainsburys and harangue people............

Is that because you don't like the colour blue, or because you're emotionally and developmentally stunted?

My car is blue (body) and white (mirror caps and roof). I bought it because I like it - I think it looks good. The fact that the rivals of the football team I prefer to support play in blue and white literally never crossed my mind, because I'm an adult and I don't refuse to consider things because of childish colour associations.

Not sure what you are doing on here then, Mr Adult-stinky-pants-poo!
