Went to the 4-2 win at the dell in Jan 92. Drove down (5 hour slog) watched the game and drove straight back. 10 hours driving for 90 mins football but was worth it just for that Mike Lake goal. I sat in the stand and was just about level with Lake as he hit it. Finished 9th in the top flight that year, would settle for the same this time round.
Sat in same stand. Lake was on fire for a few weeks as was Gannon - great times. Also went when Vinnie made his debut for United must have been year or two earlier and think we lost.

Yep. Was at that game, sat in the away end. Had the net not been there, Zico's shot would have smashed me in the mush. Reyt strike.

Remember going back down to Portsmouth on the train and the opposite platform being full of Blades fans singing

"Let's all have a disco
Disco, disco, disco
Nah-nah-nah-nah
Ooh!"

Was at the Dell a couple of seasons earlier for our defeat there (think Bob Booker scored for us)

Was at the Dell for that Cup exit in 2001 (was it?) when we kinda just gave the game away. I had the chance of knocking David fucking Elleray over on the way to the game.

St Mary's for the 2-3 defeat a few years ago. Pitch invasion at the end ... many red and white Blades fans merged with the Scummers too.

That 0-0 at the lane in 94 still is the most boring game of football I have ever witnessed.

The tedium of another 'international break' is over and it's back to the serious stuff.

Apart from our historic 1-0 League Cup win against The Saints nearly five years ago, this will be the first time we’ve played Southampton in the League in over ten years.

That win - in the fifth round of the (Carling) League Cup on December 16th 2014 - saw Nigel Clough’s Blades progress to the semi-finals where we would eventually go out over two legs to Tottenham. Our goal against Saints came from a Marc McNulty free-kick which was conceded by Sadio Mané. Watch out for Bashambauer’s pirouette!

League Record: Home: P: 24 W: 15 D: 5 L: 4 F: 59 A: 26

Away: P: 24 W: 7 D: 7 L: 10 F: 36 A: 44

On January 1992, Dave Bassett’s Blades won 4-2 at The Dell in the top-flight – the last season before the Premier League was formed.

The Saints won 3-2 at St. Mary’s on the last day of the 2007-08 season (May 4th) to secure their place in the Coca-Cola Championship – Leicester City went down to the third tier.

My one and only visit to Southampton came on October 2, 1993 – a 3-3 draw with the Blades’ goals coming from Willie Falconer and a brace from Jostein Flo at The Dell.

The Dell – with a capacity of just 15,200 - was Southampton’s home from 1898 to 2001 before their move to the current stadium, St. Mary’s.

Premier League Table:

Very early days, but us & Saints occupy the ‘middle ground’.

Just watched the highlights of the League Cup 1-0 win under Clough at the Lane. Had forgotten how good we were that night. Looked like we were the Prem League team. Could have won by a lot more. Incredible that apart from Bash all the players have “disappeared” and have never gone on to greater things. Murphy did get move to BHA but never really played in the PL I think.

The 3-1 win in 1970 ,first game of the season ,first game back in the first division and the 3-2 defeat which ended our play off hopes and kept them up about 10 years ago stand out for me.
The 1970 one is that when Eddie colougne and I think terry pain ended up in dug out fighting?

Special memories of that 1971 game. It was my debut at a first team game at BDTBL and as it was the start of a new season and being back in the top division it was deemed a suitable game to introduce the young chab SEB to being a Blade. From my first climbing the steps from below John Street up onto the terrace I was hooked. Perched on the white railings on the front, I saw United playing well and winning. My Dads mates, stood behind on the terrace all agreed I was a proper lucky charm and had to be at the next game. Problem was, school night on a Tuesday, don't know what powers of persuasion were used but I found myself back on my perch on Tuesday night for the game against Leeds. Those of an age know that your first experience of a night game at the Lane is generally one that seals you permanently to the club. I was no different, the sights, sounds, smells and crackling atmosphere of that night got me totally hooked. We then took Leeds apart (in my young mind) my status as the lucky mascot was sealed and I was a Blade for life.

Long time ago but my uncle took me to a 71-72 season match at the Lane. Can't remember the result but Mick Channon missed an absolute sitter

My memory of the Leeds game was that we got there early and got our usual spot on the wall that ran down the middle of the kop just under the roof. I had a scarf tied round my left wrist as I thought I was nails and a few Leeds came on to the kop from the top turnstiles, one grabbed my scarf and I fell off the wall as he ran into the kop my uncle Tony gave chase a beat the shit out of him and came back with it. That's when I realised most football hooligans were all show and the real hard men didn't talk about it. I wasn't the only one who got a lesson that day so did Leedscum, 3 fucking nil

Remember lightning and thunderstorm in the 2nd half?

I remember it being so cold that my Dad's car wouldn't start for quite a while when we'd walked back to it after the game. As a youngster with no real concept of leaving the car and staying in a hotel I seem to recall starting to think we were going to sit in it all night and freeze to death.

It was indeed bloody freezing.

A 17-year-old Theo Walcott played for Southampton in that game, think he came off the bench. He was extremely lively.

The atmosphere from the Blades fans was great that night, I remember everyone singing "Sheffield United" for about 10 minutes leading up to the goal. Even though it was only December I was convinced we were going up after that win. Actually I've just checked and that wasn't too bold an opinion, we were 11 points clear (albeit having played a game more)!:

My only time at Southampton was around 10 years ago on a very cold Tuesday night. Jamie Ward scored the winner in the last minute and I seem to remember the crowd was around 9,000, think it was the season they went down to League One.

He went there after united, we got him from Macclesfield. He had a blinder v Bournemouth in the cup then broke his leg v Ipswich next game. Did well to ever come back took years. Bassett said he lost a yard and that’s why he never fulfilled his original potential. Like duffield he got a serious injury in the promotion season.

I remember after the League Cup quarter final, some young Southampton lads got started on outside the Cricketers by some mature Blades mouth breathers and ended up handing out knuckle sandwiches for fun and making a fool of the United lot. Reyt funny.

Do I remember going 4-0 up after about 20 minutes at a very foggy Lane during the 89/90 season? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was about to nominate this. Bob Booker scored two goals in a first half romp, before the Blades get a penalty in the second half. Cue the crowd expectantly chanting our hero's name, only for John Gannon to step up with a tame effort.

Silent
Who were our goalscorers in 1977 when we beat them 3-2
I recall Cec Coldwell was caretaker and we were 3-0 up at half time. Pretty sure Colin Franks hit a ball which Woodward caught and put in a cross from which Edwards scored, but I can't recall our other goals.
I remember Peter Osgood scored for them,

Slightly worrying how profligate we have become whilst remaining a soft touch defensively away from home.

From sticking 3s and 4s to teams we’re now looking at 4 out of 5 defeats away from home against a bang average bunch.

Three game weeks are great if you kick on. Wastefulness and then ill -discipline cost us a Saturday.
