Kraft durch Freude
The tedium of another 'international break' is over and it's back to the serious stuff.
Apart from our historic 1-0 League Cup win against The Saints nearly five years ago, this will be the first time we’ve played Southampton in the League in over ten years.
That win - in the fifth round of the (Carling) League Cup on December 16th 2014 - saw Nigel Clough’s Blades progress to the semi-finals where we would eventually go out over two legs to Tottenham. Our goal against Saints came from a Marc McNulty free-kick which was conceded by Sadio Mané. Watch out for Bashambauer’s pirouette!
Recent-ish games against Southampton:

Full history Sheffield United v Southampton
League Record: Home: P: 24 W: 15 D: 5 L: 4 F: 59 A: 26
Away: P: 24 W: 7 D: 7 L: 10 F: 36 A: 44
On January 1992, Dave Bassett’s Blades won 4-2 at The Dell in the top-flight – the last season before the Premier League was formed.
The Saints won 3-2 at St. Mary’s on the last day of the 2007-08 season (May 4th) to secure their place in the Coca-Cola Championship – Leicester City went down to the third tier.
My one and only visit to Southampton came on October 2, 1993 – a 3-3 draw with the Blades’ goals coming from Willie Falconer and a brace from Jostein Flo at The Dell.
The Dell – with a capacity of just 15,200 - was Southampton’s home from 1898 to 2001 before their move to the current stadium, St. Mary’s.
Premier League Table:
Very early days, but us & Saints occupy the ‘middle ground’.
