The tedium of another 'international break' is over and it's back to the serious stuff.

Apart from our historic 1-0 League Cup win against The Saints nearly five years ago, this will be the first time we’ve played Southampton in the League in over ten years.

That win - in the fifth round of the (Carling) League Cup on December 16th 2014 - saw Nigel Clough’s Blades progress to the semi-finals where we would eventually go out over two legs to Tottenham. Our goal against Saints came from a Marc McNulty free-kick which was conceded by Sadio Mané. Watch out for Bashambauer’s pirouette!

Full history Sheffield United v Southampton

League Record: Home: P: 24 W: 15 D: 5 L: 4 F: 59 A: 26

Away: P: 24 W: 7 D: 7 L: 10 F: 36 A: 44

On January 1992, Dave Bassett’s Blades won 4-2 at The Dell in the top-flight – the last season before the Premier League was formed.

The Saints won 3-2 at St. Mary’s on the last day of the 2007-08 season (May 4th) to secure their place in the Coca-Cola Championship – Leicester City went down to the third tier.

My one and only visit to Southampton came on October 2, 1993 – a 3-3 draw with the Blades’ goals coming from Willie Falconer and a brace from Jostein Flo at The Dell.

The Dell – with a capacity of just 15,200 - was Southampton’s home from 1898 to 2001 before their move to the current stadium, St. Mary’s.

Premier League Table:

Very early days, but us & Saints occupy the ‘middle ground’.

Top Scorers:

Four goals, four scorers:

Last season (2018-19), no Saints were absolutely prolific with Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse sharing the lead with seven league goals each.

Men to Watch:

Nathan Redmond will almost certainly miss this game, having sustained an ankle injury. Danso will also be out, having picked up two ‘yellows’ in the Saints’ last match against Man. United on August 31st.

Easily Birmingham’s top scorer last season with 22 league goals in the Championship, ex-Blade Ché Adams (or Ché Zach Everton Fred Adams to his mates) joined The Saints at the start of this season for a reported fee of £15m. Danny Ings was Saints’ joint top scorer last season with just seven goals, equalling James Ward-Prowse.

Also worth a mention is Danish international Jannik Vestergaard whose towering header secured a point in Saints’ last game at home to Manchester United. O’Connell and Egan will have to be alert to his presence at set pieces.

The Manager:

Austrian Ralph Hasenhüttl is one of a new breed of young, foreign managers. One of his preferred tactics is the ‘high press’ where 5 or 6 midfielders/forwards ‘gang up’ on an opposition defence trying to play the ball out.

Significant Others:

Blades players with Saints connections include Glenn Cockerill, James Beattie and – of course – Billy Sharp who scored nine League goals in 17 appearances for Southampton in The Championship (2012).

Went to the 4-2 win at the dell in Jan 92. Drove down (5 hour slog) watched the game and drove straight back. 10 hours driving for 90 mins football but was worth it just for that Mike Lake goal. I sat in the stand and was just about level with Lake as he hit it. Finished 9th in the top flight that year, would settle for the same this time round.

Was also there that day. Did he score another cracker that day as well or have I dreamt that? I remember that at the time, he was going through a small phase of scoring worldies.

Yes he did. Another long ranger but a wicked deflection this time.

Jostein Flo's late double for a 3-3 draw is about the only thing I can remember against them, ever :)

Aside from that Bobby Stokes.

I have no recollection of Mike Lake. Where did he come from and where did he go to?

He was Paul Lake’s younger & less talented brother. Only with us for a couple of years then disappeared back into the lower leagues. Had a proper Madchester haircut.

Same as Sitwell, 3-1 first match after promotion and another one was the 4-1 home win on fourth round of the cup day in 1991? We’d both been knocked out in round three and they were just not up for it on a cold wet January afternoon up north. I think we’d only won two games prior to this game, Forest at home in December and Luton away, 1-0 possibly Boxing Day so beating Southampton that day was a big result and set us up for the last half of the season and survival.

Pre Xmas win at BDTBL , Woody HEADING one in! Honest.
0-2 at the Dell, Deano goal disallowed

Think that was Gannon, might have been the week after the Southampton match.
Both Gannon and Lake scored crackers in that game. Lake's trio of great goals were that screamer v Southampton, a brilliant volley away to Forest (5-2 win) and then a superbly executed volleyed lob over the 'keeper's head from a fairly tight angle in a 4-2 win at home to Man City. All these occurred in a real purple patch for us, we seemed to be scoring at will.

1990-91: our biggest win of the season on our return to the top division. We were 4 up in 20 minutes, with Bob Booker scoring twice, as freezing fog enveloped the ground. It finished 4-1, with John Gannon missing a late penalty. This was the second of 4 games Vinnie Jones missed that season after signing for us (the first was the 7-2 win over Oldham in the ZDS). We won all 4.

1992-3: A comfortable 2-0 home win. Adrian Littlejohn, in his purple patch that season, scored coolly in a one on one. I won tickets to the game from winning a Flashing Blade quiz and sat in the John Street upper tier for the third and last time. Danny Wainwright, a youth teamer, was our sub keeper that day.

1993-4: a frustrating 0-0 draw as we battled relegation. We dominated but the ball wouldn't go in. Story of that season - there were 9 0-0 draws.

We played Derby on 4th round day, and won 1-0. Southampton was the following Saturday, 2 February.

The 1 nil loss in the FA Cup 2001 sticks in my memory for:
a) David Ellery being inept
b) Being given a final warning off the steward before the match had even started
c) Having to play Portsmouth away a week or 2 later/earlier

God that was cold, on the kop but plenty of jumping around and disbelief with the score, and then the disapointment we didn't get 8. I remember the Oldham ZDS game as well, that was cold and foggy as well.

28th of December 2005 a night match at St Mary's. Went with my Brother in Law who is a saints fan and sat in their end.

Won 1 nil with a goal from HMS Shipps. Chief memory is it is one of the coldest games I have ever been to and I couldn't even cheer to warm myself up!

I remember it being so cold that my Dad's car wouldn't start for quite a while when we'd walked back to it after the game. As a youngster with no real concept of leaving the car and staying in a hotel I seem to recall starting to think we were going to sit in it all night and freeze to death.
