Bit of a coincidence this thread and last thursday brings back a terrible boxing day game v Coventry at the lane, fat boy Micky Quinn banged in a hat trick before half time, left well before full time feeling rather sick.

We seem to have played Cov a lot on Boxing Day. Remember a few trips to the old ground and a few 2-1 wins too. Remember one game we went and there was abotu 6,000 Blades with quite a number dressed as Father Christmas.

Older times I remember a Peter Beagrie inspired performance seeing off Hull 4-2 with two great long range efforts. Also recall in the Prem League a poor display at Man City I went to when David White tore us to shreds.

I recall also going to Bradford when Chris Waddle was at the end of his career ad Doug Hodgson scored in a 2-1 win to put us top of the league.

Indeed most of my Boxing Day memories seem to be either home or away of big Blades followings and mostly wins. I can remember a lot more wins than losses. If I could be bothered I would look at the results since I started going early-mid 80s.

Here's hoping we have a bumper crowd and a solid win next week.

Arsenal. Nade. Jags in goal and a fuckton of beer. Not a chance in hell we were going down after that performance... o_O

Mines Newcastle 1971, stood in the Gallowgate in our crombies and doc martens, we won 2-1 made getting back to the station a nightmare. Rough place to go in those days with 50k Geordies in attendance
Think David Ford scored - anyone else at that one?

David Ford scored in the return fixture at the Lane on Aprils Fools Day. Stewart Scullion (21 seconds) and TC were our scorers and then Terry Hibbett pulled a goal back late on. After the match I nearly got crushed in the crowd through the exit gates and I was gasping for breath

My first Boxing Day match was in 1970. Blades 2 (Nish og, Woodward) Leicester 1 (Farrington). I was stood in the BLLT. Dont remember Nish's own goal but our second goal was a piece of quick thinking. We were awarded a free kick at Kop End. As Woody was about to take it, a firework exploded in the Kop but the quick thinking Woody bended the free kick round the wall and into the net. Peter Shilton never moved (probably stunned by the firework explosion and losing his concentration). In the programme for the next home game it said that they were unable to take a photo of the goal because Woody was "too quick" for the photographers!

Not quite Boxing Day but...

29 December 2012

Sheffield United 2-3 Hartlepool

We were top, they were bottom. They beat us comfortably.

Kevin McDonald was fucking wank. Looked like he'd had ten pints the night before.

Seem to recall some very freezing and wet away trips. Bradford, as mentioned above, with that ex pig twat running the line in front of where we sat, Coventry at Highfield Rd and trying to warm up in that fuggy, misty, understand tea bar and I think Birmingham when we were in the front row in that old stand and it poured down. A stand that would have been ok when it was a terrace before you were forced to sit in the freezin Birmingham rain.

But the coldest I've ever been was in '79. An extremely optimistic 11 year old, who was one of the few at school to have a ticket for the Leppings Lane upper seats and whose team were heading for promotion headed to the sty. That day really was a turning point for United and my football for the next 5 years.

Rarely had I felt so cold in my young heart.

Two involving Stoke away, one which would have been about '87, I didn't go but 5 friends went and were involved in a car crash which left 1 dead and 2 brothers with life changing injuries. The second was '97 and it was bloody freezing, think we drew 2-2, but just remember looking forward to getting back on our coach and getting warm, only to find it didn't have any working heating on it.

Was that not a few days after Boxing Day? I remember being in Chicago that year over Xmas and we lost to Man City on Boxing Day but I arrived back on the morning of the Arsenal game and just made it back for the game. The best game of the season by a long way. It had everything we are proud of in a SUFC side. Guts, passion and some good football. We deservedly won against all the odds. I can still see Wenger slinking off at the end as Warnock punched the air. As you say nothing could go wrong after that.

No particular match, but I always told my uncles and anybody else who would listen about how good we were and they must go on boxing day as it would be a fantastic atmosphere, every time they disappointed and I would get stick and have jokes pointed at me at the family boxing day party. Different this year of course!

My first 'Boxing day' game match was Oldham away in 1976, aged about 7. The game was on the 27th but classed as the Boxing day game, as Boxing day dropped on a Sunday that year. Went on the EDS bus and ended up on the side terrace in front of the main stand. We won 2-1 but what I remember was missing both goals as an Oldham ball boy was blocking the view. My mate and me spent most of the match giving the ball boy plenty of grief.

1990, away at Luton when they had their away fans ban, and just four days after our first League win of the season against Forest. Despite the 'ban', there were pockets of Blades dotted all around the ground. Deano won it for us. Magical memories.
My ex workmate is a Luton fan, he got tickets for me and my dad. He made me promise not to cheer when we scored but I couldnt keep my promise when Deano scored

Phew! That's gotta be worth a few likes!

Had forgotten that Leeds 2-2 in the 2nd Bassett promotion season was a BD fixture. Credit where credit's due, if the net hadn't stopped that Sterland free-kick it would probably have killed somebody on the kop! A great match in a great season. Happy days.

On New Years Day (2002) I think we played Man City at home. Can't recall the exact score but it was something like a 3-1 loss.

One incident sticks in my mind - Richard Dunne who was built like someone who should've been playing for the Fox and Duck ghosted past Shane Nicholson and pulled it back from the bye line. Can't recall Dunne ever doing that before or since.

Nicholson played as if he'd enjoyed a heavy New Years Eve. Not sure if he played for us many more times that season. That team was nothing like the one that would emerge the following season.

Sheffield united 0 1 man city premiership 2007 or 2008. Absolutely battered them and they somehow won with a Stephen Ireland strike. Went into town after which was dead so ended up in Hillsborough boozing with the dark side.

There were a few Manchester City fans sat near me in the South Stand. They foolishly made themselves known when they went 2-0 up. Got the absolute shit kicked out of them by a few Blades sat nearby. It was pretty bad, and the stewards and coppers had to intervene to get these interlopers out of the ground safely!!

That was when two fans invaded the pitch and wouldn't get off for ages.

I also recall Morgan performing several impressive wrestling moves on G. Samaras throughout the match and not even getting booked.
