Last week the Telegraph expressed the hope and expectation that chairman Kevin McCabe and manager Kevin Blackwell would meet to re-assess Sheffield United's budget ahead of the January transfer window.
Unbeknown to us, that meeting took place on the very same day.

No-one can deny that finances are tight but neither can they dispute that, in a recession, the reasons are understandable given that United justly pride themselves on responsible house keeping.

It was good for fans to hear McCabe take a bullish stand in detailing how his session with Blackwell was designed to sustain a renewed promotion bid.

Clubs who have dropped from the Premiership in recent times - Reading, Norwich, Charlton and the like - have found it hard to reverse the fall as parachute payments disappear.

That is why United's current struggle is hardly without precedent. They are not alone and there is no shame in it.

But the resourceful McCabe clearly planned ahead for just this sort of challenge, knowing it would be tough.

Not for the first time, Blades followers may have cause to be grateful for his prudence rather than thrashing out in his direction, especially as he recognises the immediate need.

It looks almost certain that Matt Kilgallon will be sold in January, an event beyond the club's control. Winger David Cotterill also looks outward bound with Swansea having made an approach.

Blackwell seems assured of investing from the proceeds to shore up a squad which has had the heart ripped out of it and relies on too many loans.

McCabe said: "A substantial budget with realistic expectations has been made available to Kevin for players to strengthen the squad over the next eight months.

"It is clear we are determined to provide Kevin with a platform to reach the Premier League."

Seems to me that Mr Biggs received the following letter last week:

'Dear Alan

I am a lawyer specialising in libel, slander and defamation I have been instructed to write to you by Mr Kevin McCabe. Please note that he does not take kindly to articles suggesting the wage bill at SUFC will be slashed to £6m per annum. Please ensure you write some sickening, arse-licking rubbish next week.'

I must say that 'substantial budget with realistic expectations' is a pretty good one even in the long line of meaningless statements from McCabe.

Spin at its succint best. What it really says is you have to sell before you can buy.
Does this also mean and end to redeveloping the kop this year because we are not "thereabouts" or whatever that's supposed to mean.

There are dozens of things to say about this, and I wish I had more time to say them.

I will confine myself to three observations: first, it is telling that a piece designed to suggest that we will add the pieces necessary for promotion gives only two pieces of concrete transfer news - the sale of Kilgallon (beyond the club's control - they are powerless in the face of agents) and the probable sale of Cotterill (bad news for anyone banking on the usual seond half revival when Blackwell actually gives him a run and, as if by magic, we start winning games!). In other words, the squad will be weakened in January. Again.

Second, given the gap between what we are told and what actually happens that has crept in lately, I will reserve judgment until we actually do deals in January.

Lastly, I feel sorry for Alan Biggs, who was presumably instructed to write this article after last week's piece. It reads like it was dictated to him by someone at the club, and I bet it pained him to do it.

Brings back memories of Tony Pritchett, Reg Brealey and envelopes.

Based on our league position, and the form that we are in coupled with the injuries and the likelihood that as soon as the players come back from injury we'll be the latest club to develop w*****day flu and be in a similar/worse position, the kop wont be starting until next summer. I can indeed confirm that. ;)

McCabe may well give KB a January war-chest but going by his performances in the transfer market he will buy a load of crap with it.

Why wait until Jan? Let's out the manager and get Cotts in and thus start the winning run now.

Or better still let's get Cotterill out now and get a footballer in to replace him.

Got some nice touches but abslolutely no end product for 90% of the time

In my opinion it is Blackwell that has completely destroyed Cotterill's confidence.

How does this fit with McCabe's interview that was played on Radio Sheffield this morning saying he wasn't going to put another penny into the club himself but was working to try and secure some funds for January?

Sounds to me very much like we're hoping to have funds for January rather than we actually have funds for January.

Agreed, the lad is toss. He's the new Bruno Ribeiro - the fans love him for no reason whatsoever.

Confidence or not he is soft as shit.

As with Ched, there aren't too many players who have loads of confidence at 22.
Most need to be built up and not be hammered by their manager for the past two years.

Not saying Cotts is a Ronaldo in the making if it wasn't for Blackwell, but I think he would be a better player under a different manager.
