It's dreaded graduation week at Sheffield Uni this week and just noticed that Kevin McCabe is picking up an honourary degree on Friday from the Faculty of Engineering and Social Sciences.

Does this mean we'll be seeing some business conducted at the Lane this weekend?

Why 'dreaded'? Is it the multi-million pound boost the Universities give to the local economy and the loads of visitors that pour in to see their loved ones graduate, spending nicely in local shops and hostelries? Maybe some will even stay in the Copthorne (not that we get anything for room occupancy - perhaps a little bonus occassionally).

Because I now work for the Student Union and while it is now holiday time with most departments and outlets closed, everything is going to be reopening especially for next week*... it wasn't a comment on the effect on the local economy, just one on its impact on my workload :D

*Which is fun, seeing as it currently looks like a building site: http://www.sheffieldstudentsunion.c...r-shefunionbuild&utm_campaign=building-photos

Nice to see your support for students in Sheffield, the thought of a new block of student flats at the Lane must please you greatly?

Would that be these flats?

If so, just seen this from 'another forum':

It seems the council must be largely composed of Owls fans ... they have ignored their own planning committee and rejected the bid. Methinks that might be going for further review!

Good old Council if this is true. Back the bid?

McCabe to be honoured

Kevin McCabe will be in Sheffield at the Octagon on Friday to receive his honorary degree from the University of Sheffield.
