McCabe Comments

I've just listened to the interview. I wish some people would lay off McCabe!!. Yes he's not always got things right!!. He certainly pulled a master stroke in securing wilder and knill!. We're not able to throw millions of pounds around on big time players and that's just the situation at the moment until extra financial backing arrives?. McCabe is being sensible at the moment and isn't willing to put us into strife!. More players will arrive in the coming weeks and I'm sure we'll more than hold our own in the new season!!. In wilder we trust. UTB

If he actually did say "lucky lad" to describe CW he should follow that up with a private apology to Wilder.

CW has more leverage in the board/manager relationship, even with the new deal. So to describe Wilder as lucky for achieving what he did last year is disrespectful. He should've come out and said that he deserved his new deal even if deep down he didnt believe so.

Undermining comment and completely unnecessary.

I don't like the term 'investment'. It implies the 'investor' has some chance of getting a return on his outlay. 'Investing' in a football club is like saying you 'invest' in putting money on horses or 'invest' in lottery tickets. You might make decent money, you probably won't.

Given the crazy amounts of money available just for surviving in the top flight owners have a better chance of seeing a return than in years gone by.The thing about owning a club is the money pit is never satisfied and large sums are needed just to stand still. If we sign Holmes,Leonard,EEL and 2 more on top of the 4 we already have with wages, signing on fees, transfer fees and lord knows what else that's a chunk of change. If you were to add a couple of "names" then you're talking a hell of a lot. Seems to me it's about balance and a revisit in January.

He did and there is nothing to apologise for. It was an entirely light-hearted comment. Listen to it. The interview is readily available.

Agree, if you want to make money out of football you have to be in the PL and it can cost you more than you're likely to make just getting there. Take Brighton. £150m on players/staff etc in 6 years. Not their spend; their losses. On top of their income they have lost an average of £25m per season, since they went up from L1.

Even if their owner did a Burnley and kept as much of the PL money as he could, he'd struggle to get it back before they went down again. Including the stadium it's cost him £250m. Even as a PL club, I doubt it would be worth more than that. So his best result (from a financial perspective) is that he now has a club worth roughly what he's spent on it and if the next TV deal is even bigger, and they're still in the PL, it might be worth a bit more.

So, if all you're interested in is making money, either buy a PL club or don't bother.

Wasn't it HRH who said once we got promoted to the Championship the real investment would kick in? I may be wrong but I am certain I saw/read it in several places. As for the McCabe interview, people will take what they want from it but I think now we have the right manager in place, McCabe knows the money is being better spent hence he is more likely to let it happen. Plus HRH will have a say in all this.

Yes
But that was a method of deferring non existent investment for another day

Bit like talk of the January transfer window when were still in the summer transfer window

I think it's McCabe who is the lucky lad in finally appointing a manager who got the club out of the sh1t that his disastrous decision making got us into.

What a comedian.

Please listen to the actual interview. You'll appreciate the context. It's light-hearted. He then moves straight to a serious statement of why it was right to reward Chris.

There really is no issue here. My impression is that KM and CW are very comfortable with each other.

Kevin McCabe's biggest weakness is his habit of coming out with soundbites and one liners to get the fans on side. I am not going to criticise him after last season (I have done enough of that in the past), but look at the shit storm some of his previous comments have stirred up. I give you "Roberto Di Matteo and Liverpool levels of investment" as just 2 examples.

If the Prince is trying to drum up more investment from his colleagues, Kevin would be best served to keep his powder dry and announce this when it has happened, rather than create another stick for the fans to beat him with if all does not go to plan.

Yes, plenty of cap doffing and Bladey Bladeness in the interview.

Yes, Kevin was very Bladey wasn't he? I shall be making a formal complaint.

That said, his upbeat mood and stressing "quality of play" was endearing so I might overlook it in a sort of "all Blades" type way.

I understand your point and it's fair enough. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't Kev that mentioned Liverpool though and certainly nobody suggested Liverpool levels of investment. That would have been absurd. I think the comparison was with methodology not quantum.

On another point, schoolboy Jonny was a little annoying. Stressing what big clubs we'd be playing with a definite hint (if only by omission) that we weren't one of them. He wouldn't have taken that approach with the Pigs. The youngster's not ready to be a first team hack just yet.

So the Prince has been talking to colleagues ? Who are they as if its more of the Royal Family then that would be great ? If we were the only club owned by the Saudi Royal Family I guess they woudnt like to be 2nd best to the people who own Man City ?
Feckin Jam tomorra. We were PROMISED investment as soon as we made championship, now its pushed back to JTW IF bog roll prince can get his feckin mates to chip in cheap skate two faced lying twohatted two hats :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

It's a fair point Pinchy, but this discussion proves the point. I think what was actually said was "Think Liverpool" when asked about investment. This is massively open to misinterpretation (and exageration). If he had not used this sound bite, he could have saved himself a great deal of grief.

The Saudi link may be blessing or a curse, if Corbyn gets in at some point there may well be an embargo on any trade links at all with Saudi Arabia.

Yes you're right. I seem to remember it now you've said that. Some people are saying it wasn't Kev who said it though but Jim Phipps? Game-Changing Investment was Scott or Simon wasn'r it? Confused? I am.

Trading has a particular meaning, though. It would not include existing part-ownership of the legal interest in a U.K. limited company.

It was Jim Phipps. No matter how many times it's pointed out, or links posted, it's not what some want to hear, so they insist on sticking McCabe with it.

Think we all are Pinchy.

From a McCabe interview...

"This is game-changing for this club and the funds being invested in the team are substantial."

I'll take that from you, mate. You don't get much wrong. How about G-C-I? I'm thinking Scott or Simon.

Addendum - you've just answered it. I'm sure one of the boys said something, sometime?...
