OK, so, having slept on it I have a few more thoughts about McBurnie.
First, the way we play really doesn't suit him. He's not a target man and playing Illy next to him is not the same as playing two strikers. Much of the work he's asked to do is thankless and doesn't result in instant rewards. Press, hassle players, compete for headers, move the CBs around. I do not think he's doing this particularly well at the moment. He gets fouled a lot but instead of doing what he did in that hot streak before the injury he's constantly appealing for free kicks. Instead of giving the same back to the defender and fighting to win the ball. He doesn't look like he's moving freely at all. I know he has an odd gait but even so. Seems to be carrying something. His head doesn't look in the right space either. Far more intent on looking like an angry madman and ranting at a ref than getting on with it. I also think this attitude means that refs don't like him and rarely give him the benefit of the doubt.
He gets very few chances to score. Now, much of that is down to how we play but he doesn't have the pace to keep up when McAtee/WB breaks so not in the box and we don't really cross the ball high outside of Norwood/Doyle and set pieces. He lugs sluggish and seems to struggle to get across his man at the near post. Again, I think it's a mobility issue but on the rare occasion he has the ball at his feet in an advanced position he looks so slow at the moment. It's also a fact that his contract is up at the end of the year and I wonder if that is playing on his mental state.
Since he came back from the last injury, most games his performances have been between 5 and 6 (maybe the odd 7). Does an ok job but not really having an influence on games. Losing more battles than he wins against defenders, even like yesterday when we win fairly comfortably. This has been partly covered up by the goals he scored but now he's not scoring it looks more pronounced. The thing is, I don't think Sharp would do a better job and Jebbo is much more raw and inconsistent - he might play really well but equally really badly, which isn't great when you need to win every game.
As for next season, I don't think he's good enough for the top flight (should we go up) but then again I don't think we're likely to bring in two better players. Jebbo needs a Championship loan really and Sharp is gone. Brewster may never get fully fit for a long period again. So, I would assume we'll at least trigger the extra year.
And yes, he wins a lot of headers from defensive corners, which is great, but so does Sharp when he's on. This is as much to do with the manager and coaches than the player. He was a free role with no marking responsibilities and that's a tactic. One which Sharp does almost equally as well. Ditto with Norwood and the front post. Tactics. Thank the manager, while praising the player for doing it well.
