McAllister is 6-1 and about 12 stones in weight. How much more do you want him to fill out?

Lowton was, is and will remain, too small to be a centre-half. You cannot wish him taller.

I don't particularly want McAllister to fill out, but I guess he will, he's still young.

I disagree that Lowton is too small to be a centre half. Its extremely rare that a team will play 2 big lads, if they do then Lowton's bigger partner (Harry, Morgs, Ertl or Lescinal) can take them. Lowton needs to get stronger not

Lowton is clever enough to be able to play a variety of roles in the back 4 and is excellent in the air.

According to the official site Lowton is 5'11" and 12s 4lb. McAllister is 5'10" and 11st 9lb.

No you can't but he certainly has proven he can out jump most of those taller than him.

I also seem to remember Alan Wright being moved into the centre of defence on several occasions. He was tiny compared to any other central defender I have ever seen, but he acquitted himself quite well and often won headers against people far taller than himself.

Lowton may not be a regular central defender, but he is certainly good enough and to provide cover there if needed.

William Gallas is only around 5'10 and he's excellent in the air (yes I know there's a massive gulf between the 2 standards).

To suggest 5'10 isn't tall enough for a centre half, for me is ludicrous.
But to be fair, I've always considered Lowton to be taller than that anyway.

As to versatility, he's 5' 10" tall: He's stopped growing. No amount of wishful thinking will turn him into a centre-back. Forget it.

Best Wishes,

Ryan Shawcross.

Daniel Passarella (5'8'') and Fabio Cannovaro (5'9'') might have something to say about that. But hell, they only captained World Cup winning sides.

He is taller than that by an inch (according to the official site) and is actually one pound heavier than Morgan (or at least he was when they did the player profiles!).

Lowton's attitude is also a little bit different to others i.e Slew. The lad puts a huge value on playing regularly above the basic pay. He seems to have concluded at this point in his career he needs games to develop, the money will come later.

Sensible lad.

What's the point in still having a pop at Slew? He signed up for another two years didn't he? He did so before Lowton, whose attitude you're praising.
I for one am pleased that United are improving the wages of our home-grown, young talent rather than spending the money on Kevin Phillips as certain people were advocating.

KW has undoubtedly kicked on since then but he'd only played a handful of games for us at the time he was sold. I'd say ML has shown more versatility and is certainly as good a defender as both of them. I'm still not sure what his best position is but I think it's harsh to say he's nowhere near the level they were at when they were sold.
His class from the first minute was obvious though, many (me included) said at the time that Walker was a special talent. It's not being harsh on Lowton to say he isnt in the same league as Walker.

Comparisons wth Naughton are more realistic, Lowton is a better defender than Naughton, but doesn't offer as much going forward, and Naughton had more pace.

Walker is the full package and was both before we sold him and when we had him on loan. It was a poor footballing and financial decision to tie him up in the Naughton deal when an offer for Naughton was on the table from Everton.

Having said that Naughton and Walker are history, Lowton is a solid, technically sound, young defender and I could also see him in midfield as well as the defensive options we have. It's great to see him signed, he could be a key part of the team this season.

I could certainly see him at centre half as well as full back, he'll probably need work in the weight room as much as any thoughts of him getting taller though, just in relation to the physicality of forward we'll get in Lg1 (applies to Championship also).

To be fair Walker has some work to do on his defending - but fully agree that you could see his class from the first moment he started to play.
Will be an awesome player as he learns to defend better. Good luck to him. Quality we should still be able to watch and admire.

Walkers defending lacked something to be desired, and he showed the same problems Lowton has when going forward and being caught out of position, though I think Lowton showed a better attitude of trying to recover his positions than Walker did. The thing that really made Walker stand out was his pace and flair, and thats the talent that shone alot, Walker still isn't the full package but he's certainly turning into a great article at the minute.

I've said it before but what I like about Lowton is his vision and he has the ability to make a pass or two as well, his movement off the ball is also very well thoughout, he has a real ability to read certain elements of the game (attacking set pieces), and this will improve with experience, Walker will undoubtly reach higher levels than Lowton but I do think Lowton has a very promising future ahead of him.

It's actually fair to suggest Lowton offers us more going forward than Naughton did too, scoring 4 goals in his first season to KN's 1 goal, Naughton also played in a far better side.

Agree with all that and going back to what others have said (and the mention of Mr degoey earlier), KW DID make mistakes with us, not surprisingly considering his age / experience but I agree that he's not the 'full package' yet. For me KW is similar to Glen Johnson who went for £18M which shows what could happen if he continues to improve at the top level and gets the breaks.

Anyway, back to OUR PLAYER :)

Just watch your 5'10" centre-half marking the likes of Crouch, Iwelumo, Drogba, Davies, Carroll, Howard, Parkin, Jones and numerous others, big but far too average to mention. Then you'll understand the meaning of 'ludicrous'.

And 5'7" Kevin Phillips has out jumped most of the big centre halves over the years.

Who is this 5'10" centre half? Lowton is 5'11"!
