Gone Elsewhere Martin Waghorn

If doing this deal means we have to sell O'Connell to meet the fee or other commitments it's a bad deal IMHO.

I also think this deal would be a sign that Wilder is going to give Sharp the cold shoulder, which I think would be an error.

I spoke to an Ipswich fan yesterday. He said Waghorn was a very good player. Has a great left foot and works very hard for the team.

Seems the best option to me. I know some people like Gallagher and Hogan, but they've not done much recently and had better players around them as well.

Impressive, Managed to fit 2 completely bat shit crazy suggestions / assumptions with no foundation into one post. Have a like.

Think you need another coffee - a stronger one at that Ricky

No, I think some people just need absolutely everything thoroughly explaining and putting on a plate for them....

What I said there should be easy to understand.

That’s a complete straw man argument that you’ve just invented to find some negativity

Oh grow up. It's an opinion and it's a valid one. The team with O'Connell in it is IMHO better than the team with Waghorn in it.

I'm happy we are signing someone if we aren't selling someone better.

Why so serious son?

Dont forget his 11 assists, contributed to more goals in the championship than anybody else. In a relatively shite ipswich squad. In todays mental market, I dont think 5m is that bad..... im more surprised that we have 5m to spend after 4 on egan.
16 goals and 11 assists. Thanks that answered my question from up the thread. Don't think anyone else mentioned it.

I hope this one fall through , we can do better for that sort of money

Could we actually get a player who'd be likely to score around 20 goals, and contribute to a decent number of assists for the next few years for 5 million?

I haven't watched the guy enough to know the ins and outs of his play, but Ipswich were one of the worst sides I saw us play last season. They create fuck all and he contributed to more goals than anyone else in the League.

Waghorn's season last year is nothing like he ever produced before (save for his shooting fish in a barrel year with Rangers, which doesn't tell us much). That's slightly worrying, though Wilder's analysis will of course be thorough.

No, I grasp that as well as anybody.

Maybe we shouldn't be wasting time on Gallagher and Hogan then. Or maybe we should accept paying loan fees or signing on fees to cover the excess wages.

The only people who appear to be wasting time on Gallagher and Hogan are us (on here)

Leon had never got double figures in the Championship until last year either, and before we talk money, Leon is 5 years older.

That's all true but it has nothing to do with whether Waghorn can repeat his performance.

If he and Clarke do repeat, we would be in a great position.

Pretty much spoken about on Poundshop Partridge Live last night. Said that Sharp is hungry to kick on, and that he understands that we’re strengthening in the area. I think as we look to move the likes of Evans and Lavery out, you’ll end up with 4 strikers of which Sharp is one. It won’t be the cold shoulder treatment, but simply reflective that he may start less due to the players brought in.

No coincidence that Egan was being highlighted as a possible future captain though.

There's nothing happening on the Waghorn front . He's valued at 6-8 million and thats way more than Wilders prepaid to pay .

On the Billy Sharp front Wilder alerted him to interest shown from an unnamed club to which Billy responded with ' I only want to play for Sheffield United ' . Wilders happy with Billy .

It’s not, you’re automatically finding a negative way to spin something without any basis what so ever.

To even suggest Wilder would sell a centre back to sign a forward is completely ridiculous.

In August 2016 Wilder sold Adams and DCL and spent the money on a goalkeeper and the loan fee for a centre back.

With Fleck, Clarke and Duffy signed as their replacements. It wouldn’t be Waghorn for JO’C, and it won’t be Egan for JO’C as he isn’t a LCB.

That's only a starting figure to work down from ;) Just because that is the asking price it doesn't stop us from putting a lower bid in. Leave the bid there for a few weeks and see if they give in :)

Fleck, Clarke and Duffy had already been signed weeks before. The other players were needed because Long was hopeless and Wilson was less than impressive.

The idea that someone would never sell a player from one position to pay for one who plays in a different position? That's ridiculous.

It's a valid point you make but I'm just repeating what Wilders had to say about Waghorn. Any interest we may have had in Waghorn is pretty clearly dead in the water now .

Hmm not convinced myself or it could be just wishful thinking on my behalf

No, what’s ridiculous is your notion that Wilder would sell JOC for Waghorn is ridiculous.

In the above example you give, DCL wasn’t a starter and Adams had already been replaced, this deeming them both surplus to requirements. It’d be like us selling Long to fund a new striker with Henderson and Moore already at the club.

JOC doesn’t have a replacement at the club and Wilder won’t unbalance the side. - not saying that’s the same for every manager but it’s clearly the case with Wilder.

I could start saying “I hope signing Waghorn doesn’t mean we’re selling Freeman and Baldock” - it’s some randomly invented worry to turn a positive negative without any basis.

Haven’t we literally just sold a player with Wilder’s approval partly to help him strengthen positions elsewhere in the squad?

TWTD reporting Ipswich have turned down our bid
