Gone Elsewhere Martin Waghorn

He's been in a routine of poor season - good season for the last four and next season he's due a poor one.

He's probably peaked as a player.

Resale value will plummet if he doesn't do well this season. Age is against him, and last season was an exception to the norm so a poor season would see his value quickly return to previous levels.

He's the same player he was last summer when we could've had him for about 400k.

He's still heavier than he should be.

It's his last chance for a big move and he could earn far more elsewhere if Forest and Boro are interested so I don't know why he'd be so keen to come here.

If we sign him then we have no excuse for not signing Sam Gallagher.

He is a player I've always liked who would suit us. But I don't think this is one we should be breaking our transfer record on. Wilder would truly be going from one extreme to the other. £10m+ on Egan and Waghorn would not represent an optimal investment for a club like us.

Wow you're a happy bunny today aren't you?

I’d rather us look abroad to a country where strikers can still be got on the cheap. How much did Leicester pay for Mahrez? £400k I think?

There are bargains to be had but we don’t have an effective international scouting structure, so we are locked into the rat-race of paying way over the odds for locally established players.

It’s a mistake imo.

Players like Flo, Wirmola, Marcelo, Dellas, Borbokis, Katchouro. They cost peanuts but not all were monkeys.

I think we’re missing a trick with this obsession on British players tbh.
How much does an international scouting network cost though?
Then add to that the added risk of foreign players not settling as well as British based players tend to and potentially not fitting in with our squads 'culture' as much.
Don't think it's an easy decision to make tbh.

Waghorn won't cost £5m in the same way Egan didn't cost £4m. It's like those jobs you always see with OTE £80k. It's not real.

It's in both the buying and selling clubs interests to list the potential fee if ridiculous performance targets are hit. Both sets of supporters are appeased

I like MW. Always have.

But I have to accept and concede that I am out of step with the commercial realities of modern transfers and fees if £5m is where we are at for a decent, not brilliant, Championship striker.

UTB

5 million for Martin Waghorn is ridiculous, really hope this isn't true. Too much money for a 28 year old with 16 championship goals last season.

Dont forget his 11 assists, contributed to more goals in the championship than anybody else. In a relatively shite ipswich squad. In todays mental market, I dont think 5m is that bad..... im more surprised that we have 5m to spend after 4 on egan.

To put it in context we sold Beattie for ~4m when he was 30/31

Waghorn for Ipswich averages a goal 36% of the matches he plays, Beattie was at 55%.

So age benefits Waghorn but obviously goals benefit Beattie - but that was 9 years ago when the football market wasn’t as crazy as it is now, so 5m doesn’t seem that bad.

Announced today or just signed behind the scenes, if you are putting your ITK Credentials on the line, be specific ;)

Woah, I'm not putting anything on the line!
It went like this:

Him: what do you think to the record signing?
Me: Egan?
Him: No, Waghorn
Me: not seen it announced
Him: ok, thought it had. Bit of info for you there then.

That's the football conversation in it's entirety.

You’re about as pressing as radio Sheffield, all important questions left unasked ;)

When it's the buying club, only the moron supporters are appeased.

Ricky You don't seem to have a very good grasp on how strongly wages factor into these transfer decisions.

If you listen to Wilder's recent interviews you'll notice he puts emphasis on not wanting to bring players in that will be on ridiculous amounts more than other first team players.

Maybe Gallagher, like Hogan, doesn't fit in with our wage structure.

Me: Defo done? signed? I can't got to S24su with this type of shit. I will get flounced and bounced.
Him: Done pal, trust me.

Fixed what should have happened.

No, I grasp that as well as anybody.

Maybe we shouldn't be wasting time on Gallagher and Hogan then. Or maybe we should accept paying loan fees or signing on fees to cover the excess wages.

Think you need another coffee - a stronger one at that Ricky
