Luke Freeman returns

Don’t see why people are writing him off. He’s had a bad season at a shite team whilst injured for most of it. Probably had his confidence shattered by being farmed out on loan instead of playing in the Prem.

He’s been superb at this level before. No reason he can’t get back to it with new found fitness and a new start with a new manager.

Seems to be overweight and always injured.

Another immobile midfielder who rarely can put together a solid 45 mins let alone a full game or run of games. We've already got a few of them!

Given a chance in the Premier League and did not work out (due to form of others) and then dropped a division and could not get in a side near the bottom of the league.

Another big money signing that has made no impact sadly.

Be amazed if he is anywhere near the starting line up in August.

United will look to pay him off or send him out on loan again for the final year of his deal I feel.
Mate I couldn’t disagree more (love you and 95% of your opinions and listen to all your podcasts the minute they come out all the way from over here) but to describe him as a midfielder is incorrect. He was a 10 most of his career and more in the Brooks mould than the Fleck. I still thought he performed well enough deputising for fleck but wasn’t surprised when he made way for him. He was brought in with a very specific role in mind; the 10 in a 3412, when we dropped the ‘1’ for a flat 3 he has no chance. To not rate him based on that; I will just say, if we’d brought in Bruno Fernandes at that point for that non existent role he wouldn’t have played and you wouldn’t have rated him either. Doesn’t make him a bad player. The same goes for his time at forest. They were so fucking defensive and had no room for a player in his mould. They were flat as fuck with a focus on keeping clean sheets so the idea of a guy like Freeman playing the ‘free role’ is as alien to them as it was for us under boring premier league era wilder.

If I’d said to you 2.5 years ago we would be in the championship playing a ten, who’s experienced and proven enough to do that? I doubt you could come up with a better suggestion than Luke Freeman and he’s our player we don’t even have to sign him. Seeing what Slav got out of Cairney, I’m incredibly excited about what he can get out of Freeman. I do feel like (and don’t take this the wrong way) you’re looking at this player in a very narrow minded way. It’s gonna be like a new signing for us and if he didn’t belong to us we’d be crying out to sign him in my opinion. Keep up the good work with the Cobra Kai podcast x

Hi Stegosaurus here

Good news. I always rated Freeman. It's another sign of Wilder dropping the ball that he spent so much on him and then barely gave him a chance, but when he did play he looked a decent player.

Fleck was brilliant in 19/20 and rightly ahead of Freeman. He was unfortunate that the change in formation was working brilliantly until the restart. Seemed to lose professionalism with his diet following this. Think he’s done.

No probs disagreeing at all! What this forum is all about.

Hope you are right and I am wrong as we need creativity/something different.

We will see in the next 6-12 months.

Ironically, so have quite a lot of our team. He should fit straight in.

Get him back, see if he pulls his socks up. If not then get him out on loan again and use the wages towards TC from Fulham.

To write off Luke Freeman is daft-

This 3 minutes shows without doubt in a set up for him he's got it...

Was excited when we got him & puzzled when he was underused and loaned out. Though in fairness CW did have the habit of pursuing players, getting them and then shipping them out on loan. If he's fit and SJ can get the best out of him he could be a real asset next season.

think luke freeman is similar to quite a few of our players it all depends whether slav fancies him for our squad

I'm the opposite. Always thought he flattered to deceive and didn't get the hype. Funny old game.

I'm very glad it's not just me, Luke Freeman always seemed a complete hype job.

I remember just after we signed him someone on here confidently telling me that they thought Freeman was the player in the squad most likely to fit in at Premier League level.

Well this is a cheery chuffing thread!

Welcome back Luke, I rated you years ago, was delighted when we signed you, disappointed that we changed the system, understood why you couldn't then get a game, and felt it a shame when you were sent out on loan.

Fresh start, clean slate this summer. Crack on. UTB 🔴⚪⚔️

Btw, on a serious note. I do understand why the formation was tweaked for the Premier League which makes the Freeman signing all the more odd.

In fairness, we didn’t know at the time that the tweaked formation would be that successful. It made sense to go into the season with a Plan B (number 10 approach) and all bases covered. Freeman for £5m was probably a sensible balance in terms of not overpaying for a role that we might not use.

Yeah I’d agree with that. I also think the fact Lundstram slotted in to the role so well last season wouldn’t have helped. Would have imagined in an ideal world Wilder might have been hoping to rotate the two with Freeman being the more attacking option, but Lundstram got forward so well, how could you drop him?

Get him fit and fighting and we have an excellent attacking midfielder in this league and he can show again the reason we signed him.

Reason he went to forest was because he's not been fit for a bit. Why wilder sent him out. The fact forest don't want him shows he's not pulled up many trees either.
But hopefully he can restart his career with us again.
Haha I see what you did there

I think despite Freeman we still need more creativity, definitely.

Few wingers and another number 10 wouldn't go amiss.

You watch Luke Freeman on the ball and he‘s got that Samir Carruthers vibe about him......a poor mans Adel Tarabt.

You can see the stand out ability....he promises so much but never seems to quite deliver.

That's probably it. He's very good technically and has the ability to stand out against inferior players but unfortunately he's just not physically good enough to cut it at the top level. It's fine margins but he's slightly too slow in mind and movement to make it in the Premier League or at the top of the Championship.

That said, a QPR season ticket holding former colleague of mine was devastated when Freeman moved to us as he lauded him. As with every player in the squad, he'll have my full support whenever he pulls on a United shirt as long as he puts 100% in.

I always liked him, but he did looks miles off it for Forest. Hopefully we can get him fit.
