I’m not in the least encouraged by the thought of lower-league Louis Reed occupying a pivotal position in our team. It will mean we aren’t doing very well.
Isn’t it time we had a bit more fuss about Ben Whiteman? Oh, how we needed him in January when he’d knocked in a handful of league one goals. The silence from the Doncaster Fucking Rovers bench is deafening now.
Oh, those Bladey Boybanders are so very quaint; so very local,

Surely keeping him for another year as back-up isn't staking your job?
We have no idea what will happen in summer. How Coutts will come back. If Fleck will stay. I just don't see a need to automatically write him off and get rid of him. He's earned another year, for me. It's not like we'd get much money for him. I guess, much will come down to finances in summer.
That's a sensible post, and I agree with just about all of it. Your assessment of Reed isn't unfair either; he hasnt impressed in the first team since Clough was manager. I, like you, am doubtful that he will ever make it at this level.
However, not all young players develop at the same rate, and their rise doesn't have to meteoric - Matt Lowton didn't make his debut until 20 (Reed's current age), and look at him now.
Don't forget that until this year, Reed has lived off U23s and brief appearances in the 1st team. A lot of people will have said something to the effect of "he needs to bulk up and play man's football" - something he's doing now.
Having this first, full season will teach him a lot, his fitness will improve and hopefully so will his consistency.
What I'm trying to say is that we should keep all our options open: young players, who cost (relatively) very little should be kept around until the coaching staff are certain time's up.
We signed Nathan Thomas (a good L2 midfielder) for £300k - Reed is a good L2 midfielder too, and he's 'free'.
(I would also enjoy Pinchy's response to this post, if he's willing to give it.)
Good response! Yes I don’t disagree with that. If he’s someone we can afford to keep,.
If it was up to Pinchy no player under the age 21 would be allowed anywhere near the first team. If by some miracle they do make the first team, they best perform like Messi or it is off to non league with them.
All this supporting the club and their young players like some sort of Blades fan. It must make him sick to the back teeth reading it all.
I don't know why Pinchy bothers supporting United. He hates most of the players: Morgan, Done, Jagielka, Monty, Keith Edwards, anyone who played for Dave Bassett (who he also hates, presumably wishing Billy McEwan had stayed on and given us more performances like the 5-0 home defeat to Oldham). He had contempt for Wilder until it turned out that Wilder knew what he was doing so he tries not to mention that.
The only person associated with the Blades he ever expresses any admiration for is David Weir. Enough said.
Yes.So is he alright or shit then?

The comparison of Reed's debut, and the Orient match when Badger and Bernard Shaw made their debuts, is spot-on. It is no guarantee of a long career, of course, but the potential is there. The really difficult thing to know in such circumstances is how he would play with and against better players - good midfielders such as Coutts and Duffy look much better playing with good players who anticipate and make space. Combative mid-fielders like Fleck make their own space.I first saw Reed at a York in the warm-up at a pre-season friendly and to be honest I thought something like " looking as young as that he must be good to even be here today, who is he?"
After that I followed his career, looking out for any mention of him in team selections, reports etc. Under Clough he soon made his debut for United, the youngest ever player to do so in United's history. He was composed, neat and tidy in possession and didn't let the 'size-thing' stop him holding his own. He went on to show he was a real prospect and I believe that age-for-age he is the best player I have seen in 60 years. I watched Badger, Bernard Shaw et al for United reserves week in week out and Reed is right up there with legends like those. On reflection Walker is the stand-out youngster even back when he was 18 but Reed was 16 when he debuted. Others have joined the team at older ages.
One occasion springs to my mind and it was another pre-season friendly under Adkins v Toon. We were showing our new signings Sharp, Sammon etc. and Freeman scored a 'worldie' equaliser. My Toon pal sat with us at the game and the player who caught his eye was Reed - " proper footballer that lad, how old is he?".
Adkins went on to set Reed back 2 years. Now none of us know how good he really is and can be. When he went on loan to Chesterfield he was like a 'sop' to our neighbours as we suddenly snatched Brooks back from them, a bit of a slight on the young lad really. When it happened I said on here he would be their Player of the Season and it looks as though he will be well in the running. Now that for young lad, supposedly too small for adult football according to some, is some achievement in a relegation battle where Chessy are in danger of dropping out of the football league. Don't they need real men, fighters and nasty sods? No they choose class and in any case believe me Reed tackles a lot harder these days and he has also bulked up and believe it or not he is still growing at 20 years of age.
Good luck to him and us over the next vital year in his career development. There's another 15 years or so left in that career and I hope a lot of it is with us.

I loved that first paragraph. Life is changing, football is changing (for the better in many ways), but even the big clubs' fans love to see 'the local lad done good'. Wilder's record as a manager here would have made him a hero anyway, but the fact that he is 'one of us' is making his time at the Lane extra-special. The locals have to be successful, of course, but nothing in football beats that feeling when it works. He deliberately or otherwise misses the entire point of supporting your town, city, local club. Blades (supporters) want the Blades (club) to do well and nothing is finer than local lads who have come through our academy (many Blades themselves) reaching the first team. It's a dream as a lad that one day you may be a footballer and play for the Blades. Of course you have to be good enough. I'm afraid Pinchy simply doesn't understand this. It wouldn't surprise me if he is not from Sheffield so our affinity to our local team and lads simply escapes him. It's the same everywhere, The Class of 92 at Manu, they came through the academy many of them local lads. Harry Kane, 'he's one of our own'. If you completely lose the tie to your local area you may as well just go and support whoever is doing well.
In denigrating a particular player or players he is of course having a snide but quite transparent dig and attempt to belittle 'Bladey' forum users who DO get exactly what it is to be a blade.
Oh and what is it he tries not to mention? Is it this his thoughts on the appointment of Wilder?
He wouldn't get a mention if he had no United connections. He's a complete nonentity.
Bladey Bladey Claptrap. It never changes. Sack a manager with a proven record of success after less than a season and bring in a former Blade on the back of 15 years of not much.
Nonentity. Fucking Bladey Bladey Nonentity. Read and learn.

Allow me to explain the concept of subliminal perspective, old man.
Look up at a rooftop, it's not very high. Stand on the rooftop, it's a long way down. The subliminal message, formed over millenia of evolution is....don't go near the edge or you may die.
"Littlelouis" as you choose to call him runs on the pitch and he loses 12 inches in height. Subliminal perspective, but only in your eyes.
Just to add, how many times did you play for The Blades, Chesterfield or England?

I wonder what the Whitby Warrior thinks of this development?
