It's not rumoured, and it's not happening. Jags is done, may be moving onto the coaching staff if he decides to hang up his boots.

I think Jags might be registered as a player for us next season but become part of the coaching staff. I am sure he has spoken about getting into coaching.

So why lump them together?

Sharp and McGoldrick have had contract extensions, Jagielka has not.

Because they were all rumored to be getting new deals, and it was at that time when it was only a rumor I suggested it meant that the finances may not be as available next season as they were this.

I could have not lumped them together this time, but i'm nothing but consistent in my views/arguments I put forward, and don't only list the facts that support my agenda.

Seems like that's exactly what you've just done.

You've conflated things that are fact with things that are not fact based on rumours.

Here's how it went.

I read a few weeks back that there were rumours of Sharp/McGoldrick/Jagielka getting extended deals.

I questioned that if these rumors were true, it would suggest that the transfer funds for the summer may not be that high.

I could have just listed the Sharp/McGoldrick deals, as the lack of a new contract for Jagielka does not fit my agenda.....But I don't do that.

You could have just listed Sharp and McGoldrick because they're the ones that have actually received new contracts.

You included Jagielka because that did fit your agenda.

No it doesn't add validity to my argument, as he has not got a new contract.

Why would signing players who are important on and off the pitch suggest we've not got a pot to piss in? We might not, but even if we had Man City cash, we'd still have signed Billy up, the negative wave of him leaving his club on a free or for peanuts to play for Fleetwood or something would be of more consequence than the financial side of paying him for the length of a new deal.

McGoldrick is similar, he's a big part of the club and handy on the pitch obviously, and on his wages and with plenty of room in the squad, why not?

Leicester have given Wes Morgan a new deal, doesn't mean they're up shit creek financially and can't get any new CBs.

Sharp and McGoldrick were rewarded for what they have done this season. McGoldrick was being linked elsewhere which is probably his agent trying to get him a contract here as he wasn't a highly paid player. Does anybody really want McGoldrick not to be here next season?

As for Sharp, it's one last contract as reward for what he's done for us and rightly so. It looks like he wants to see out his career here. Throughout the season players have been signing new contracts , I don't believe for a second it has anything to do with our finances next season. We were paying top 10 Premier League players Championship wages and that's rightly be rectified. We knew we were safe so the rewards and increases were handed out.

Nobody was criticising these deals until we lost a few games in a row either.

The worrying part of Sharp and McG getting the extended contract is the length. Given the situation, extending for another year for both makes sense. It's the fact we've extended them for longer which worries me. These two are still active members of the first team, playing in more games than they don't.

If we extend Jags' contract then that sends alarm bells to me. His legs have gone. We only have a 25 man squad and we need cover for Egan should he have a bad injury. I have zero confident that Jags could do a job twice a week for 6 months.

If you think we have 2 players for every position = 22 add an extra keeper and then 2 extra forwards and that's your 25.

I think Billy will retire when this contract runs out and deserves to have a contract with us until he's ready to hang up his boots imo, but with McG the extra year protects us from losing him for nothing if we want him after next season, and allows us to ask for a fee if we don't.

Neither deal worried me in the slightest 😊👍

The United manager, who also confirmed he has triggered a one year extension to John Lundstram's contract, cited Phil Jagielka and Richairo Zivkovic as two members of his squad who could be invited to stay next term having pledged to help his team complete the rescheduled campaign.

“There are decisions to make,” Wilder added. “Jags has brought a great amount of experience into the group. There’s decisions to be made and budgets to be finalised. This is a moving situation. Even though I’ve said the numbers, nobody knows when supporters will be in grounds. So sponsorship deals, of all kinds, they could be affected to. Jags has put himself in the situation to earn a new contract. But it’s a moving situation, he understands that.”

I don't understand the concept of giving a man a 2 year contract as a "reward". He's been paid wages & bonuses for what he's done , so it smacks of sentimentality which is something CW has always said will NOT enter his decisions for the club.
CW has always said that in football if you stand still , you are actually going backwards. I see the 2 year contracts for Billy & Didsy as very much standing still when the offensive side of our game so obviously lacks the pace to score many in the PL.
1 Year might have been ok but 2 has disappointed me.
As for Jags , reputed to be a high earner , the idea of keeping him on a playing contract next season is not just standing still , it's actually going backwards. We need a like for like cover at CB , as the recent absences of JoC & Egan have demonstrated. Jags might fancy coaching but he no longer fits the bill as a player.
We know that CW wants new blood at CB or he wouldn't have tried Retsos.
So I will be very sad to hear of a new playing contract being handed to Jags.
I know that funds will be tight , but if we don't bring in a younger faster CB , we are asking to be relegated , whether JoC leaves or not.
We simply don't score enough goals to survive if the defence isn't bang at it.

I can see your point regarding Sharp but his importance seems to go way beyond the playing side and Wilder clearly thinks his influence is worthy of the length of contract despite the fact he's obviously going to be a bit part player.

I can't agree on McGoldrick though. He's our best striker and is absolutely pivotal to how we play. I know his goal record is terrible but he offers us so much in his all round play. We look a completely different team when he's playing. He deserves a longer , better contract as he's been integral to us being successful this season and is unlike any other player we have. We simply couldn't afford to lose him in my opinion.

Agree with you on Jags though and I'll be disappointed if he signs again. That said I don't think it's set in stone or anything. Wilder isn't going to say "yeah Jags is here till the end of the season then he can fuck off". If he signs a new contract I'll be surprised to be honest and I'll have to listen to Wilders reasons behind it as it wouldn't seem logical in any way regardless of finances.

There's no reason he can't sign a contract with different terms t'old Jags.

A pay as you play with a basic for a bit of coaching work, fine.

If we give him what he's rumoured to be on again then that's a bit weird.

How has he earned a new contract ? He's clearly been a top player but there's a limit to the speed of his legs which has been revealed on the occasions he's played. Come on CW , let's not be too sentimental.

We were always going to be on a shoestring budget next year, we certainly won't be able to add all the quality we need so we'll need to prioritise.

Where are your priorities ? Mine are 1) goalie , 2) CB cover which can be Robinson or Kean Bryan but which is not Jags , 3) a system change to accommodate Calum Robinson or sell him + get a pacy central striker.

GK for sure if we can't secure Henderson again.

Yeah maybe a bit of defensive depth, although Jack Robinson has stepped up well so feel comfortable spotting him in, maybe utilise the loan market here. We don't want to spend too much on depth players.

I don't think our strikers are as bad as made out. We don't give them nearly enough service so we don't get to see much of their finishing ability. Maybe a striker that can create their own chances, tricky feet, etc. But they aren't cheap.

A Saint-Maximin type player for that 10 position.
Someone with a bit of flair.

We need to go back to using a 10 to help us create more. I don’t think pace is our problem as some seem to think we just don’t create enough. Buendia when Norwich go down would be my pick but will likely cost a few bob.

Are you for real mate? Berge hasn't cost you a bean. I don't understand why transfer fees are of any concern to fans. Leave them to those conducting the business.
I doubt Wilder thinks he "Jumped the gun".
I'll trust his 20 odd years experience in the game ;)
well itll be concerning for fans if we have £20m less for summer, could be the difference between relegation or not if we carry on in this form into next season and looks like we are extending our current 1st teams contracts

the oncoming covid financial crash is nothing to do with experience, no one saw this coming

and correct me if i am wrong but we used some of the summer budget to get the january deal through for Berge, we were banking on our revenue following forecasts for tv money, which of course it wont now

edit: it was steve bettis, said we used a separate budget from the jtw budget for berge (and i doubt they could pull £20m from
behind the sofa!) https://www.sheffieldunited.news/ne...will-affect-sheffield-united-transfer-budget/

And we can do what about it? You die if you worry, you die if you don't, why waste energy on events we have no control over.☺Like I said, leave it to those who know better.😎

We will do what United's always done. Sell a few to buy a few. Wilder sold Brooks at the right time. We will sell a couple some fans think are irreplaceable but they will be replaced

The reduction in PL money will have an instant impact as it's a reduction in revenue and cash coming into the club. The purchase of the ground won't be as we won't be paying cash up front for the ground, there will be some loan in place to fund it (i.e. mortgage) and the cost of the asset will be depreciated over its useful life in the accounts. On something like a ground it would normally be between 25-50 years so the actual 'cost' in the next financial year will be between 1/25 and 1/50 of the value paid.

A simpler way to think of it is if your take home salary is reduced by £5k next year and you still decide to buy a house for say £500k then you are not £505k down next year. You are the £5k down and the £500k is spread over the duration of your mortgage term.
This. Plus, our ratio of fixed costs in terms of wages vs income is likely to be a whole lot healthier than most clubs in the PL. Some may have great squads now but their ability to add players, both in terms of purchase price and wages bill, will be hampered by the crisis. Missing out on Europe could be a blessing given the stress on players. I sense the whole transfer market is going to get a shake up.

Another year for Jags. He’s a good man to have around the place and in the squad. Think it makes perfect sense.
