That painting by Rolf Harris was bought when the Sheaf Valley Baths were demolished by Paul Fletcher, owner of Fletchers Bakeries, and ended up hung on the wall on one of the production lines, Lanham 5, until the day it was destroyed when half of Fletchers burnt down.
Sheffield is definitely lagging well behind nearly every other similarly sized city. Speaking from personal experience i think Sheffield city centre is like a bombsite compared to other cities that i see a lot of. I work in Nottingham, and most days i drive to Liverpool and have a break in Liverpool. Liverpool is a similar size to Sheffield, has got a similar socio-economic background.
On my breaks i usually go and have a wander around Liverpool, I've got the museums, a 15 minute walk and I've got Albert Dock where i can walk down to and have a coffee, Liverpool One shopping centre with all the latest shops, it is always packed and thriving. As an example you've got a huge JD Sports store, i couldn't even tell you where JD Sports was in Sheffield, you've got a Fred Perry shop, Pretty Green shop, you've got all the top end shops, and all the bottom end shops if that is your thing. You've got everything you could possibly want within a 15 minute walk, then compare to Sheffield. there is absolutely fuck all in Sheffield that compares, unless you want to go to Meadowhall for a soulless, insipid trip to a shopping mall beside the M1. There isn't a single tourist attraction in Sheffield that makes people want to visit Sheffield,. Every weekend i see stag and hen do's a plenty heading to Liverpool, they might not be pretty but they bring in a lot of money, would anyone ever want to come to Sheffield for a stag or hen do?
You look at Nottingham and it is the same, it has got a big tourist landmark, Nottingham Castle, but it also has all the top end shops, a vibrant nightlife, loads of good places to eat. Everything is well planned out and well thought out, and it has had the investment in it. You get off the train in Sheffield and you have got a 10 minute walk past the all the beggars and vagrants to get in to the city centre, when you get to Nottingham you have a 5 minute walk down the road and you are straight in the Broadmarsh centre on the egde of the city centre. Sheffield City Centre has the fountains but it is merely a gateway to nothing much.
I'm not deliberately slating Sheffield, i really enjoy living in Sheffield, it has a lot going for it, mainly the scenary, cheap housing, and the feel that it is still a genuinely nice place to live, but for the city centre. That is like a bombsite has hit, there is absolutely nothing to ever need to go in to the city centre for, the only time i ever go near it is for the train station, or to go to the match, and that is what needs to change.
And before people start jumping on the backs of the traditionally socialist council, it was the same left leaning council that delivered us a world class tram network and a flagship out of town shopping complex well before anyone else had one.
I agree nearly 100% with that Brownie ,Sheffield is definitely lagging well behind nearly every other similarly sized city. So in summary if only sheffielders voted tory the city centre would be a thriving metropolis like Leeds and Manchester both labour run councils
Even when it was lib demsLeeds and Manchester are just Labour councils ........ Sheffield council is so radically leftie that even Corbyn has disowned them as nutters .....
UTB & FTP
A lot of us had to leave to find work and opportunities which is a shame. Sheffield lost a lot of good people, you can see that from the number of exiles on here.I agree nearly 100% with that Brownie ,
The people in the city are fantastic and friendly , and will go out of there way to help you .
I read the star on line and sometimes Iam embarrassed with the lack of forsite by the council , how long is the shopping area in the city centre on the go , ikea's finally got planning permission , HSBC are moving into a new office and some people are objecting to bringing jobs and growth to the city .
Sheffield is a fantastic city , and I miss it all the time , I can't wait to come over on satdi
Then when I get back on the train to manchester airport my heart will be in my boots knowing I'm going from the city I grew up in ,and love .
To a city in now call home .along with an Irish accent now
I'm proud to be from Sheffield , but it's being left behind by every other major northern city , for invest , renewal , and jobs , you don't have to ride over people to get things done but just look ahead 5 / 10 / 15 years .
The area around the peace gardens is a lovely spot , go up that way straight out of midland station and the area is very nice .
If Sheffield is truly a city on the move it needs to move with our times now .
The tram system is much better than Dublins at the moment , it's currently been joined together now , somethings do work and work well .
This is not an over the top job aimed at the council but forward thinking is needed .
To help our great city catch up .
Im proud of my roots , I wish I could have stayed there and found work in Sheffield
But it wasn't to be.
Didn't Liverpool get massive financial assistance from Heseltine when he was some sort of Minister, years ago?Sheffield is definitely lagging well behind nearly every other similarly sized city. I think that one was very much a two-way street - central government funding tended (and still does) go to Manchester & Leeds as a result of the clashes with central government. St Pancras over the years is a perfect example - almost obliterated and neglected as it 'only' went to Sheffield. But when its redeveloped for Eurotunnel, the Sheffield line gets punted off into a bus stop. All talk of the 'Northern Powerhouse' was centred on Leeds & Manchester, although i think we all know that was just hot air and shite. Then there's HS2 bypassing Sheffield. As if the 'spur' will ever get built (hopefully the whole lot will be shelved in favour of improving the east-west infrastructure). There was a full on european loading gauge mainline from London through Sheffield to Manchester, electrified between the two cities as well. Even Dr Beeching thought that was a line worth keeping. The argument against that is that Sheffield Council were content to let the city rot and hold this up as a beacon against Thatcherism whilst at the same time were sinking what little money they had into maintaining dirt cheap bus fares. Both were purely politically motivated.

I now call Dublin home and your quite right it is a fantastic city with a shed load to see and do .Of course you will always miss your roots dublin 10...........could be worse though, Dublin is a great city! I've spent a lot of time working there over the last few years and a group of us went over there for my 50th recently - wanted to enjoy the place rather than just work there![]()
Liverpool had huge funding from the EU
there's plenty of regeneration both in the city centre and in urban areasAccording to a scouser I used to work with a lot of the 1980's funding went on a garden festival and redeveloping the dock area in that place where that old perv used to jump around on a map doing the weather.
Not much went in the estates where it was badly needed.

You wouldn't believe the amount of tourists that come here
I think if you take care of the main attractions and the central areas the rest benefits
AmazingWhat a coincidence Frank, you and judge both living in Liverpool.
Even when it was lib dems
We've certainly got a track record of building museums no one visits.Sheffield's the home of football, where football was born, home of the original "United" yet the national football museum gets built in Manchester. I think we missed a trick there.
And there you have it £9.20 (last time I used one) for two hours in one of the mainly empty multi storey car parks and they still wonder why no one shops in Sheffield centre where the inhabitants are mainly the homeless, beggars, druggies or charity fundraisers. Walk up Fargate and you will be lucky if you get to the other end without being harassed 3 times by someone with a clip board or collection bucket.Earlier I went to Meadowhall. A 15 minute drive, absolutely no problem with parking and it was free. I was in there about an hour, got everything I wanted, stayed warm and dry, didn't have to walk ages from shop to shop, didn't get harassed by beggars and charity fundraisers, went home.
If I had gone in to town then it would have taken me roughly the same amount of time, I'd have spent ages finding a parking space and paid through the nose for it. I'd have spent ages walking from one side of town to the other side of town, I'd have got cold and wet, and been harassed by the beggars and charity fundraisers.
And that is a part of the problem with Sheffield......
