I'm thoroughly underwhelmed. Haven't ever rated him, and I don't expect to change my mind.

A very dull, safe sitting midfielder. I know we're light on experienced options in that area, but Rothwell is a drastically more exciting option if we can get him in too.

It's ironic that his name is Phillips, because he'll never get far forward enough to even consider making a cross.

I can understand being a little sceptical based on the last couple of years but I take issue with ‘haven’t ever rated him’ - at his best he was one of the best midfielders in the country, and his best wasn’t all that long ago.

Give your head a wobble mate, he’s obviously got the quality , he’s only 30 and he’s got several years ahead of him yet.

He's a no nonsense get stuck in hard tackling player. I like watching him in a England shirt, he's different to any other player and other teams must be weary when he's playing against them.

The one thing that worried me when watching playing for England is he does a lot of pointing on the pitch hence the pointing pick in Blades kit (??) and did too much side to side to side to side to side football without it actually going forward.

He’s a very good championship player

Can’t believe he’s dropped down to our level, it’s some fall from grace for him but fair play to him for dropping down and swallowing his pride

He’s a proper Wilder and Sheffield United player. My worry is it could be Godfrey 2.0 he could struggle with the pace of the game due to his inactivity, however, he’s been training with top players daily he should & could be a step above Championship level.

How many times do you see good players struggle in the prem but thrive in lower leagues

City, at the time one of the best teams in Europe signed him for around 40 million, played for England, around i would guess 3 years ago, and now he's not good enough for a mid table sheffield united!

If he gets anywhere near what he's capable of then he's the best player in the division and then some.

Let's not forget this is guy who City signed because he was routinely bossing around the best midfielders in the world.

Hopefully a big step down in level and a bit of TLC from a manager who backs him, takes that pressure off him and he can get his game back on track.

Or he could be a busted flush.

What a bizarre signing, maybe the most strange I’ve ever seen us make. I don’t know if I’m buzzing or dissapointed or what!

He played every minute for an England team that reached the final of the Euros… but I was massively against Southgate playing him at the time.

He signed for Man City for £45 million… but I scratched my head that they even considered paying that for him.

Leeds loved him… but I never really ‘got’ it and just thought he was a steady passer surrounded by players way too good for the Championship when they went up.

All those things don’t just happen in football without merit, but I also never actually thought any of those accolades were justified.

It’s the classic Wilder ‘project’ signing going for a big name that’s fallen out of favour but we’ve usually signed them in the Prem and they also usually fail, however, we’re a level lower and he’s the biggest name of the lot… so why has he come here?!

That all sounds like I’m being negative, but I think it’s actually very exciting in such a fucking weird way.

I’m going to think about what i thought about Bamford for Leeds - never understood the hype, want a fan of him but now he’s playing for us and let’s just say - what a player!!

Wilder in an interview earlier on this season was on about McCallum how he was a regular in Leeds team in an interview, ok yes he turned good!

Ive never really rated Phillips as an International class footballer and thought he was vastly over rated and never got the hype. But Championship football is obviously a step down in quality hopefully he is fit and can do a job for us
