Incoming? Kalvin Phillips

I know everyone seems to be hating on this but, I think Phillips at this level and with a pre season and is wanting to play, I can't see much wrong with this.

If he can find the form he had in his leeds days then happy days, as long as we are not footing the full amount of wages then what is not to like?
 
If Man City are gonna be paying the bulk of the wages or maybe they make him an offer to pay up his contract so he becomes a free agent and we could negotate a mutually agreeable salary within our pay structure.

Everybody criticised the Patrick Bamford signing initially and that worked out pretty good.

He’s not found any kind of form for three years. A preseason is as much use as a hole punched condom.

he not been playing week in week out for three years, maybe the reason he fancies it here at United is that he can get back to playing a lot more and hopefully find that elusive form?

A pre-season means integrating in with any new players, understanding how they play and how we want to play so i dont think it's useless although if we went on last seasons then i do agree!

It will indeed. Last year the same people pissing their pants over this were crowing about how progressive and modern Sellès and our recruitment was. Any negativity was mocked. Any pointing out the complete garbage we were signing arrogantly dismissed. And here they all are again, so smug and sure of themselves still.

I think the positive is he wants to come play here specifically, seems he is prepared to take a cut wages to do so (unlikely needs money anyway given his City contract) and seems to genuinely want to rekindle his career. He could just sit on his contract at Man City and wait for it to run down.

That said I will start calling him pineapple head again if he doesn't perform. 😄

Aren't we about done though waiting for players to have a proper pre season? For the past four pre seasons, he's been contracted to arguably the best team in the world with world class facilities and fitness coaches, so it's not like he came to us without a club trying to build his fitness up. He spent the last 2 and a half months of his loan spell with us injured and unavailable, which is not a great sign of things to come.

Had he hit the ground running with us then I'd be all for it, but he made a grand total of 3 appearances and still managed to get sent off in a match that we were absolutely cruising in. His Leeds days are now 4 years ago and when he was arguably in his prime. He's had 3 unsuccessful loan spells since and has barely played for his parent club, I don't think we can afford to be a trial for someone who will no doubt be one of the highest earner, in such a key position.

I really hope to have a massive slice of humble pie, but I think this is a gamble we should stay well clear of.
 
It's not impossible for him to be a success for us.

But when you look at how little football he has played since we called COVID 19 coronavirus it feels a little unlikely.

I would have been less concerned if it was WITH Jario rather than instead of.

I get this side of the argument as well, but if you don't take a chance on say McGoldrick, Bamford then the other side of that is Ravell, Rodwell and so on, but Phillips is only 30 and he has played at the highest levels internationally, maybe it will be a hiding to nothing, or it could prove to be a master stroke who knows i personally think it's a risk worth taking.
 
its obvious wilder wants him back in but owt over us paying max 25k of his salary and its a risk but he could be immense for us with a good pre season behind him could be a good deal for all 3 parties

I am assuming Wilder wasn't confident that Jairo could play a full 90 minutes consistently even with a pre-season.

I'd have liked to have kept Jairo anyway though as he can cover as a CB.

Ironic, fans are now crowing about how good Wilder is, whilst others are pretty clear on his downfalls.
 
Outside of me thinking Riedewald was a much better option for a lot of reasons, my other concern is how much Kalvin Phillips really wants it.

Appreciate he might have expressed a desire to return, but when he joined on loan his main motivation was seemingly being closer to home.
If, as you'd expect, he's still going to be picking up his near £200k a week salary, how bothered is he about the on field stuff?
His fall from grace has been pretty spectacular and he's really struggled with his fitness and discipline.

He has it in his locker to be far too good for this level, but there must be a reason things haven't worked out for him at West Ham, Ipswich and us..

Theres also a reason for that. He’s a poor footballer. He was dreadful at West Ham, laughably bad at Ipswich and equally as bad with us. He’s shown nothing, absolutely nothing to warrant us (sorry Wilder) fawning over him. The one thing he did is get sent off against Wednesday. Outside of that?

It's the only reason I can think we got rid. Perhaps that's why we picked him up mid season as he had a underlying issue?

To reiterate your last sentence - I just took a look at stats for both since 22/23 season (I count as post covid for what its worth)

KP: 67 games played in - (In match day squads for 124 games)
JR: 75 games played in - (in match day squads for 123 games)

Whilst JR has a better record in the last couple of years, its interesting both have been available to play for almost the exact same number of matches - with Phillips mainly suffering from playing (or not) for Man City.
I do think Jairo's recurrence of hamstring injuries (as we saw this season) is a reason we've opted for KP instead.

For all the stick CW gets, I think he'd be able to tell if Phillips 'wants it'. If he was going through the motions, there's no chance he'd be coming back here.

Hard to tell much from the training videos etc. but he did seem a happy relaxed figure in the snippets you see.

I remember him saying that, was it a slip of the tongue? I'm not sure where he lives but Manchester to Leeds, or Sheffield to Leeds is about the same.
Even if he lives in Wilmslow/Bramhall, like a lot of the Manc players, there's nothing in it commuting-wise.

I don't think he was planning on upping sticks and moving to Sheffield or Leeds.

To be fair to Wilder, he got last season's (24/25) team exactly where it should have been: third. The issue which gets glossed over is that we were in with a great shout of finishing top or second, only to throw it away with two awful defeats at bottom 5 teams over Easter. We then choked badly at Wembley which was 10% down to VAR and 90% down to Wilder not reacting to the situation.

The pass Wilder gets for last season is ridiculous. Yes, recruitment and preparation were poor but Wilder was appointed on September 15th. He had 8 months and 40 league matches to get 74 points. We got 60 and a team where half the players clearly didn't want to play for him.
