What good is showing it in training if he's never on the pitch?

For all the derision Soumare get's he contributed 100 times more than Phillips did last season and if we're bringing anyone back I'd take Soumare over Phillips any day of the week.

I liked Soumare … he made some typical young player mistakes but he showed enough to suggest he can become a really good box to box midfielder combining good physical attributes with some silky touches at times.
The price seemed to be a bit too steep but he has definite potential.

Funny thing is, he’s gone onto great things yet when we were in the Premier League we were quite positively comparing Fleck to him that first season and the promotion one and we were right at the time.

Sadly one has been hampered by injuries whilst the other has really kicked on.

Well remembered, the comparison between Fleck and McGinn was a talking point (at least on here).
The thing is it was a genuine comparison as Fleck was coming into his peak, and it was a standard that
underlined Flecks importance (alongside Coutts and Duffy) to where we were and where we hoped to be.
There's no doubt that Fleck was exceptional, such a pity that injury prevented him from fulfilling his promise.

Agree. But the price tag to make it permanent had to be so much cheaper. He was so raw, if he was a steak he would still be moooing.

I liked him, but as soon as it was obvious that we had blown the season up, he was never going to sign under the existing deal for that £7m permanent fee and he was gone. Even when CW put him in, he would look pretty decent and then look honking (as a lot of young players do). Problem was he wasnt then a long term investment or player we needed to develop as he wasnt going to be ours come May. He will be a better player for this experience, and i can see him being a decent xhampionship level player in the future. If we still had those parachute pymts then he might have been worth a cheeky £3m take it or leave it bid, but we have other fish to fry now with what money we so have. A shame but is life.

Like I said he seems to have his heart set on coming back so defo wouldn’t rule a permanent deal. We’ve obviously made some kind of impression on him in his short time. Obviously great if he stays fit but that’s the problem.

So the usually clown logic from Danny Hall and if this happens Wilder and the board are worse.... We have shifted out a £25k a week midfielder in Jairo and we are looking to replace him with someone that is on £150k a week at his parent club. For that to work City will have to be paying at least £125K a week and then that would us be breaking even as a like for like swap of Riedewald to Phillips so in theory with us still not under the ratio we would need City to be paying more of the wages if no other transfer sales. You have to start thinking even though City have literally cash to burn where is the incentive to send a player out to another club in the last year of the contract and pay more than 3/4s of his wage. Hall then mentions "United now only have Sydie Peck, Oliver Arblaster and Joe Rothwell as their under-contract midfielders for next season" depending on the formation we are looking for (not forgetting Billy Blacker might be involved in preseason too to add to that list) if we kept hold of those 3 plus adding the likes of Blacker into the mix do we actually need Phillips, if the answer is we need more depth, we could look at adding a loan in there but a younger player such as Toby Collyer (not saying has to be him) but if you reduce the wage bill by getting rid of Jairo you can only refill so much of that, players of that mold attract salaries of £5-10k a week which is achievable. Not £20k+

Why would Man City be paying Phillips £150k? Doesn't sound logical. Tripled/Quadrupled (guesswork) his Leeds wage... in case he turned them down?!

More likely he's on 60-70k. We were told Man City were covering a lot of his salary.

Anyway, seems a crazy signing unless we're somehow extremely confident he's fully fit next season.

He hasn't become a bad player - you're right. What he's become is a £multi-millionaire who never has to work a day more in his life...

Bit like golfers who win a major and you never hear from again. He's climbed the mountain and is now sat on the top of it drinking cognac and lighting Cuban cigars with £20 notes....

He's so not the profile Wilder MkI built his reputation on. He picked up players with a point to prove. Philips has proved his point and has nothing left to prove...

I've been saying this (in different words) for years.
We need players on their UPWARD - not downward - trajectory.
Kills 2 birds with one stone.
1.They are hungry and want to do well
2.We might even make a profit - if they improve whilst with us - when we sell.
