saying next season we need to reduce our budget further, is indirectly saying that all that mccabe spiel last season about the salary cap (etp ftp flf uvf ira whatever its called i dunno) was a load of horseshit. not that we didnt know that already, obviously.

Why so? Next years 65% will be 65% of a lesser amount, surely?

erm. dunno. only if our gates are lower??

I suspect gates, sponsorship, commercial revenue and income from player sales will be down. We probably even made £1M from the previous year's play off's which would have upped turnover then.

im confused. presumably the income figures used must be for the previous seasons income?

cant use ones that havent happened yet unless youre psychic. so gates next season wouldnt matter anyway. but then wouldnt last seasons budget be based on our championship income the season before? or are the income figures based on on an estimate of the next seasons income? o_O

Just a general query about the fair play rules, do player sales count in the figures? The reason I ask is that they would not be included in regular turnover and are a one-off item, so to speak (well, they might be at another club that isn't always selling its best players). I always understood turnover to cover only regular items such as sponsorships, ticket sales, sales from the shop and income from kiosks etc.

From an accounting point of view I would have thought that player sales would be covered within profit/loss, but not turnover.

I think that the salary cap for League 1 next season is set at 60% of turnover down from 65% of turnover this year.

However, when I look at the talent assembled last season I can't work out how we managed to get near the salary cap limit, and Long, Maguire and McFadzean were all freebies.

Doyle, Higginbotham, Collins, Cresswell, Robson and Kitson don't play for free. I would think they're all on Championship-level salaries.

That £1M will have been earmarked for players bonuses if the agents have done their jobs right.

All academy talent doesn't count in the salary cap.
ie more kids in the team, the more you can pay for talent to cover your gaps.

corrected it for you

Some good news:

"Kevin (McCabe) has spoken at becoming more distant and this restructuring helps him do so. Given he lives abroad and is regularly travelling around the world, this move genuinely makes it easier for him to step back both in geographical and operational terms. "

The only reason for him to stick his oar in is if he's chucking money at it. If we're genuinely going to be run without his subsidy then he needs to go as far away as possible from the decision making.

At the recent press conference he said he hadnt watched a game since we were relegated from the Prem and that he just acted on advice of the people who he paid to run the football club so him getting more distant will probably have no effect what so ever. Maybe its the fact that hes been so distant since the Prem that we're doing rubbish and actually we need him to get closer to the club so he can see what a shambles its become.

Really? I'm suprised at that. Any fan with such financial clout would have seen much more than that - perhaps that's the problem, he isn't really much of a fan at all?

I agree with most of this but I remember when Wilson was appointed after quite a lengthy interview process McCabe said he had had enough of short term fixes, we need to look at the longer term, using academy players, cutting budgets etc etc - everything that Winter has just reiterated that the new man will have to follow.

And I'll bet that was the plan. And had we hovered around 6-10th for most of last season we may have stuck with it.

Unfortunatly (!) we ended up being one of the best 3 teams in the division and people started chasing the dream again (see James Beattie)...then when we failed, the club moved back to short termism, which worked for 6 months, then all fell apart.

The question we have (and it isn`t one we can answer) is how much better would De Gronimo (sic), Ironside, McFazdean etc be if they had more of an opportunity this year rather than Kitson, Robson, Murphy (who should play up top IMO)

He is a big fan you know.

Either he has a twin who sits in the director's box or he's watched loads of games since we got relegated. I see him in there fairly regularly.

Sure he said he hadnt seen one since Unsworth relegated us, then made a little joke about it as he was sat next to him. Definitely said he just made his decisions based on what he was told about the club from the people he paid to run it rather than from his own experience.

It has been a few weeks since I watched it though so my memory maybe failing me.

I've seen his twin quite a few times

How much money has his twin got ?

He must be mad, because this is literally impossible with the revenue league one affords.

So what was our average home crowd last season? Around 18 - 19,000? Next season it will be around 15,000. Bloody hell! This club is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It seems they are going to be more specific and honest when it comes to what they want the new man to do.

  • Lower budget
  • Looking for lower league talents
  • More playing time for our own talents
  • A desire to get rid of some current squad members
  • An emphasis on developing players and building a team
This is very much the opposite of what happened under Wilson.

As much as I dislike Wilson, this was - and will be for any United manager - out of his hands. We find 'em, we flog 'em.

Looking for lower league talents? Why should that be solely the managers job? A desire to get rid of some of the current squad members? They'll be on contracts and nobody else will take them or want them.

Also, I see 'patience' being used. I've just finished 51 years. I'll be dead before United get any measure of success.

* EDIT - My mistake, said he hadnt been to many this season or in the Prem as thats when hed moved away.

How do I edit a post Ive already posted?
