For some reason I keep thinking about Bovril and wagon wheels being consumed at half-time; and I can remember it oh so well (never the actual game though!) and I wondered if anyone ever took pictures on the concourse there (or anywhere else in the atmospheric old shed)?

Old Photos thread half a dozen or so pages back.

From the late 60's until the building of the new John St. stand , me and five other mates always went on the terrace there and found it a great place to watch the match .

However , for anyone who thinks the the current catering provisions at half time are a bit primitive , I can tell you that they are positively Michelin star compared to what we had then . This consisted of a tiny bar run by one grumpy old bloke in a narrow passageway and we discovered very early on that , if you weren't one of the first there you would probably finish up without a drink .

To get round this , we took it in turns to be the 'runner' who would go just before half time and order 12 bottles of pale ale . When we were winning 2-0 and had been treated to a master class by TC , which was often the case , a beer and a fag never tasted so good . :)

Bert stood on the Kop for 30 years and he can always remember seeing the glow of hundreds of cigarettes in the old wooden stand and the flat caps.
It's much better now but there was something very nostalgic about that old stand....and the Kop.

Stood on the pitch, and Eddie Colquhoun appearing in the directors seats after beating Watford to finish 2nd.
This ( Kop) side of the tunnel, trying to get autographs from Kiev Dynamo players.

There were three or four old timers who sat on the front row just behind the terracing, the row in front of us. During the match there was never a time when we weren't getting a waft of pipe and cigar smoke added to the whiskys they had lined up on the ledge in front of them.
To this day I always get taken back to being a young lad at The Lane when I come across these aromas...... happy memories.

the night we beat Cardiff 5-1 for promotion was unbelievable how the crowd rose as one
the noise was deafening
still the best atmosphere Ive ever experienced
used to stand by the tunnel on the terraces then
I totally agree. Of the great times I've had at the Lane, that night stands out head and shoulders above the rest. Something special seemed to unfold that night. The atmosphere was electric.
An unforgettable evening.

Watford game couldn't get on Terrace, closed. Ended up on't Kop, cricket end well outside the covering. It was a sunny day though. Crowd 38,857 according to the sufc bible.

Was on BL end. Final whistle, P.C. Copper arms stretched tried to stop us all getting on the pitch. Put his arms back down quick though.

I only got to a game in it for the last time it was open, the 2-0 win over Newcastle in 1994 – two goals for Blake, and plenty of optimism going into the final two games left...

Genuine question is that April 85-86 or Dec 86-87. Thank You, in advance.

It was April 86, seem to think last home game of the season, they still had an outside chance of promotion if memory serves, we played Palace a week later at Selhurst. That day there was the usual last day pitch invasion, followed by it kicking off with Palace on the pitch and outside the ground.

Wasn't the 86-87 game the one were Pompey had 3 sent off and we had one given his marching orders (Beagrie??). And I've got something at the back of my mind that Paul Mariner either ended up in goal for them or scored an own goal winner for us??

I do believe that a mate of mine has the old badge that sat on the roof of the John street ,this is what he told me .
And I've no reason to disbelieve him

I remember Dad taking me to infamous Walsall game relegation decider. Memories of players coming down tunnel and Martin Peters swearing and kicking over bucket of water when Don Givens missed that infamous penalty.
i was too young to join in but remember one guy joining pitch invasion at end, climbing over wire fence and cutting his hands to ribbons in the process. My Dad telling me that this club always finds a way to fuck up. Never heard him swear before then....formative memory but stuck with them through thin and thin times, making the highlights awesome.....

I was on the Lane end ,3 skinheads just along from me off Woodseats ran onto the pitch when we scored the first and across the cricket pitch onto the pavilion. Still friends with them 50 years later and they are known by some on here still, Smithy and 2 of the 3 Wilsons.

The three ran as fast as they could towards the pavilion while being chased by a policeman who managed to grab one of them as he jumped over the railings and then the unlucky one was led away.

Are the 3 Wilson’s Geoff, Pete, and Graham from Hackenthorpe? If so they were proper old school Blades who travelled the country in the day Great laughs and memories!

In 1963 / 64 my first introduction to the Blades was going to Central League / Northern Intermediate matches and standing on the terraces of John Street.

Towards the end of the 1964 season my dad started taking me to first team games and so on to the kop where I've remained up to two seasons ago.

These pictures are as close to the John Street terrace that I used to stand.

In those early 1960 days there were no advertising hoardings so the iconic white railings were in full view.

The tunnel came in between the two dugouts and there was a gap at the top of the tunnel in front of the seating area where you could walk (squeeze) through to move from both sides of the terrace.

The tunnel mesh netting was a dome shape I think (might be possible to see this on the Joe Shaw 600th appearance photo v. West Ham). The netting had gaps where you
could shove your hand and have Roy Ridge, Denis Shields or Bob Widdowson give you a 'low five'.
