Bit of an over generalisation, players decline and deteriorate for numerous reasons

Danny Ings, Ben Mee, Dean Hammond, Kalvin Phillips etc etc all played at a high level for years and won various medals.

Doesn’t make them good signings.

We need to either sign players on their way up or still near their best and stop chucking money at players who are already well over the hill.
"Sign players on the up" - we did that. We don't use them.

How are we going to develop players (your Ukakis, Polenkadov ect) if we don't ever have them anywhere near the squad?

Hell, even Curtis can't get a look and we're crying out for a RB

Alan played 19 games in PL and Stephen played 15. Surely they played together? 🤔
They were certainly in the same matchday squads in that Warnock PL season. Whether they were ever on the pitch together, I honestly can't remember.

Edit: they were on the pitch together for the latter stages of the Everton game that season (just picked a random game to check so there may be others too)

On 1st January 2007 in the 3-1 defeat at Boro, Alan came on as sub replacing Steve. Yes, you are right they played together late in the Everton game.

club gets linked with player that has played at a high level for years

"No I don't want that one! That one isn't expensive enough/hasn't played at a level that I like!"

Honestly this fanbase sometimes

If we are comparing John to his brother. Harry wins in every way.

Harry can still improve and was has shown his class in this division and at the World Cup.

John is older and played in a league that is league 1 standard apart from 3 teams. However he has played for Scotland quite a bit.

John probably makes United stronger and is probably the best CB depending on how Tanganga feels.

If you view signing John without thinking we can get Harry, he’s a good signing. However in comparison it’s a disappointment as most would love to resign the Minister of Defence 🇦🇺

At the same time, you have to factor in our finances. If we can get a CB that improves us, and is within our budget, we should be happy with that. Signing Harry Souttar was always going to be out of our price range

John doesn't have a great injury history either, he seems to have a lot of ankle issues:

Exactly that.

Problem is most blades will be disappointed we aren’t getting Harry, then compare any signing we make to him.

It’s a bitter pill to swallow having to accept mediocre players, rather than the best in the league.

We have never, and probably will never, have the finances to get the "best players in the league". That doesn't mean we can't turn mediocre into great like we have done before

Tanganga and Cannon could be viewed at the time for some of the best players. Obviously different now.

Hopefully John Souttar and Matondo (if signed) work out to be gems. They just don’t feel very exciting.

Tanganga is probably the best player in our team atm. Cannon isn't the finished article but with the right work could be one of the best strikers ITL this season.

JS I'm not sure on, but if it shores us up then I'm all for it.

Matondo is young and definitely a talent (hence the previous price tags). I'm optimistic about that one

I'm fine with players that are mediocre now, but have time on their side and could end up being useful. What I'm not fine with is signing mediocre players who were good but never will be again, or, worse, were never good in the first place (especially if they are welcomed by chunks of the fan base on account if being lanky, shouty, or a former player. Or any combination of the above)

Why do we always end up with the lesser talented brother?
I'm thinking of Torre Andre Flo and Jostien Flo.
Yes Jos wasn't too bad but Torre was shit hot!
Chances are we'll end up with the less talented Souttar brother too.
Are there any more Bellinghams coming down the pipe at Brum we could bagsy?

John is 29 so he’s not past it. Sounds like a decent age for a CB. Might be of that leadership mould we need so badly?

Not a good age for any player with a serious injury record like his.

The best centre back we’ve signed in the last five years was ahmedhodzic. Why finding another player of that profile is suddenly beyond us is a mystery to me.

The failed Ai experiment was an absolute joke. They seemed to give a blank cheque to a muppet with a copy of football manager and a search engine.

In the past we’ve managed to pick up the likes of JOC and Fleck who still had head room to grow into better players. It was players more like that I was referring to rather than absolutely random overseas punts.

I don’t really care if a signing costs a 5er or 5 million or if they’re 18 or 38 so long as they can impact the first team squad in a positive manner - either immediately or in the near future.

I also was quite outspoken before the World Cup about thinking Harry Souttar was a big risk and unrealistic. He’d be expensive and has already had two career threatening injuries which required surgery. As much as I really liked him I just don’t see him as a realistic signing or the most sensible either.

His brother is someone we’ve looked at before and has played for a team who’ve managed to finish 3rd in a two horse race playing against a bunch of teams generally considered to be below the level we are at. He’s also got a questionable fitness record and a lot of rangers fans say he’s declining now and isn’t the player he used to be.

I was making the point that just because a player has played at the top level previously doesn’t automatically make them a good player

Right now we seem to be either linked with aging players clearly on the decline or prior targets or often fitting into both categories where as we used to be capable of picking the odd gem on the cheap out of the league below.

If Harry’s brother comes in he’ll get the exact same support from me id give Harry himself as I try my best to support everyone playing in red and white but I can see why a lot of blades are a little concerned about the lack of imagination on the rumoured shortlists right now.

They will compare to how he was and not how he is now !

I think the chances of imagination on shortlists is a forlorn hope given those involved in putting them together 🤣
