Well, yes, but as nopigfansintown points out, if they know what they are doing they will not do it unless it's very good financially and they have someone else in mind.
 

The middle centre back is possibly the most complex role in the back three. You have to cover for either (or both) marauding RCB and LCB when we’re attacking, know which man to pick up or when to drop off and cover either CB when we’re defending…the middle man is our one true total defender. So, it’s not an easy role to learn, understand and fulfil properly.

We should not undersell Egan…neither in the role he has made his own, nor for actual cash. He’s worth a lot us.

Why would we be scrambling around for a replacement we've had months upon months to identify? I don't buy that at all. There's a list of names in positions (particularly of our more saleable assets) with replacements already identified. If the bid comes too late to get a deal done ( e.g. we want a replacement from abroad) the club can just turn the offer down flatly. There'd be a bit of disruption, sure, but the player will either come in and prove his worth or be a bad signing.

We should be making these decisions based on how it affects us on the pitch rather than in the P&L column. Tell Leeds he’s not for sale.

We have promotion to win and we need him.

We’re not scraping the barrel for pennies to put in the meter to keep the floodlights on. If we don’t go up then, and only then, we can start making the hard decisions about who stays and goes next summer.

Everyone went nuts when the board sold Deane & Fjortoft on deadline day when we were looking so good for promotion. These days it’s our own fans that seem obsessed with selling our best players for a bit of profit, making out its in the clubs best interest. Being in the Premier League is the clubs best interest, not flipping players for a quick buck. Have some ambition lads 👏

I'd agree with a lot of that, but again, if someone good can come the other way and/or its silly money, it's a defensible deal.

My preference would not be to do it at all, FWIW.

And getting rid of 2 first teamers like on Black Thursday would be dumb, I agree.
 
I like Egan and think he's better than some believe on this thread.
Is he perfect.... no. But there's a reason that the Ireland manager rates him so high and that there is interest in him.

If we lose him this would be a blow, getting someone in today would be tricky and likely result in a reduction in quality at the back. Ciaran Clark could well fill in but Egan has essentially done this role now for 4 seasons solid going into his 5th. And is obviously part of the spine of the team.

Hopefully he remains here today.

I don't see a reason why United can't sell a player for massively over the odds and come out of it with a better team with an increased or equal chance of promotion. Nobody wanted to sell Fleck, Stevens, Baldock etc etc when they were reaching their peak but you don't find much debate about that these days. Nobody wants to sell Egan for a low ball fee. A big fee that we can reinvest and come out stronger with is the case being made. I believe my case is the ambitious one.

I also think there is a large degree of naivete on here about what United will look like next season if we don't go up. Future proofing is always wise imo.

Look at our clean.sheet record ,all players make mistakes that's football the ones that are good make the least .
 
Egan does make mistakes everyone does but he makes most of them when he is given the ball In daft positions
Tip tap toe just outside our penalty area with Norwood is not the game he is suited to
 
All other points aside. We could at least replace him with a CB that doesn't miss sitters every other week 😄 Egan's head is cursed by Connor Salmon after accidentally using an old towel of his at the training ground.
 
Just seen Dan James set to leave Leeds on SSN which was part of the article mentioned by the Daily Express. Slightly more worried if true!
 

Just don't see this happening at all. Egan is absolutely key for us, could make a very valid argument that he's far more valuable to us than Berge or Ndiaye given we have no one else really who can play his role.

He's so good for us, ender rated by many.

His only real weakness for us has been a real lack of goals for the positions he gets in to.
 
Egan is not perfect, but he's a key part of our defense and one of the best defenders in the Championship. Selling him at the last day of the window would be a massive blow for our promotion chances. Still 2 year on his deal, so no reason to sell unless some team offers 20+ million.
 
Leeds transfer activity isn't referring Egan at all on Sky Sports. You'd think it would be mentioned

A number of teams may not be open to selling the replacement we had in mind given the timing.

Seems daft to sell anyone at this point.
 
Even if the recruitment team had identified a brilliant replacement for a reasonable fee that would leave us with a tidy profit, it could take the new player a handful of games at least to bed in. We can’t afford even a month of bad results if we’re going for automatic promotion.

One concern I would have with selling Egan which I would not with say, Berge, is his consistency in terms of appearances. United have played 175 league games since we signed Egan. He's played in 164 of them. Fitness and availability are skills. This was one reason the sale of Jags, whilst inevitable, was such a blow. Egan is the only senior centre half we have who has not been injured this season. With all the disruption we have, it would be nice to keep him and his consistency.

Just to add, the only games he’s really missed are after he’s been sent off (another occupational hazard). I can’t even remember him getting injured.
 
Surely this is indicative of the fact we will play hard ball with anyone re Berges valuation
