John Egan

The longer Bournemouth go without any centre backs, the more likely it feels we'll receive a slightly panicked series of bids for Egan.
Can they afford him they’re meant to be really up against it in terms of finances what would we ask for Egan close to the start of the season? 12-15 I reckon

Really think that Egan and his agent might have been rather busy this last few weeks !

Hope not but fear the worst.

Is there anything concrete behind that or just your own concerns? He hasn't been linked with anyone this window, that I've seen.

Nothing.

Nada.

Just a feeling that Anel has been acquired to be our central CB and not the LCB / RCB.

And that Egan may have been angling for a move and now we have a replacement, the club may grant his request !

Hope I’m wrong. Never mind what the know nowts think, he’s still a terrific CB at this level.

I have no idea why people think Egan is going every season. As far as I know there's never been any serious interest in him outside some nonsense about West Ham last season.

He's coming up to 30, has had 2 average seasons in a row, will be on good money here and has no resale value. The only clubs likely to be interested are the relegated teams and I don't see that at all.

If we get an offer in excess of £6m I would let him go. We cannot afford to let players run down their contract and leave for nothing.
we have two more centre halves than we had last season, Gordon has improved and Lopata could be the kick it, head it guy we need at the back if he signs his contract.

Certainly seems from everything we've seen preseason that Ahmedhodvic has been brought in to play RCB.

I thought at the end of last season that Egan might be on the move this summer but it doesn't look like it so far.

Agree with you about the player, by the way--find it hard to understand why he gets so much grief. International experience, great age, ever-present in one of the best defences in the division last season, a leader, a popular lad among his teammates. With our finances there's no way we could afford a player half as good at the moment.

Nobody’s buying a 29 year old centre half on the back of a very average championship season.
Tad harsh. I think he played in every single league game(?) with a revolving door of defensive partners, goalkeepers and two different managers playing completely different styles. Hard to shine in those circumstances and we would have been in a mess without him. He’s set high standards since signing and although he may not have been as noticeably impressive as he was in the promotion season, he was still our best defender over the course of last season, again in my opinion. Although Bogle would have been had he managed more games.

And that Sander was bought to be an offensive player, given how he was played for his club AND his country prior to coming here ? We shoehorned him in !!!

Anel is a central CB in a 3. No doubt in my mind. Although looks competent at RCB.

Being Uniteds best defender since JOC got injured hasnt entirely been a difficult competition to win

Fair comment but Wes had one of the clean sheet records in the league last year and this was not all down to his goalkeeping, the defending in front of him deserves some credit. We were pretty sold after Slav left and Egan was at the heart of this. Also consistently gets a lot of praise for his performances for ROI, which suggests he’s better than bang average.

He’s a good defender, I said last season was very average, but that is likely because of that standard set before

The only reason I personally floated Egan being sold is he'd be a decent and affordable (probably) option for Bournemouth, who appear to have a crazy shortage of CBs.

JOC was our Premier League cash cow had he not got injured or possibly been able regain his fitness.
He can’t have been that far off an England call up. Better than Mings in almost every aspect, much better football brain.

Mings has a handful of decent games and the media think he is the next Rio Ferdinand.

He looks like he should be really good, got all the physical attributes but he makes mistakes, his positioning isn’t always right and his judgement/decision making is suspect. Not the worst player I’ve seen in an England shirt but I think JOC was better. If he’d not got injured and carried on at the level he was playing at, I’m sure Southgate would have had a look at him.

Imagine being an ex top level cb and picking that dirty useless twat Mings instead of JOC

You are correct. Southgate was watching him on quite a few occasions at the Lane.

“Everything we’ve seen preseason” apart from last night, when Anel played in the middle for 45 minutes and looked totally comfortable there, and it all fell apart when Egan came on.

Yeah, I thought about that after I’d posted it 😂

I still think AA was bought to play RCB as Basham’s successor. Hecky has said as much in interviews. I suspect him playing in the middle was about managing minutes in legs.

But who knows? He looks like a talented guy and I’m sure he’d excel there. Id rather see him playing alongside Egan for the moment though.

After Hecky took over, our defensive record was the second best in the division, for all the stick it seems to get and Egan was the ever-present. I also think Anel, has been bought in to play RCB initially, ( maybe with a longterm view, to moving into the centre ). Clark, may equally be used to cover/replace Egan if sold/injured/suspended. I don't have any sense, there is a plan to sell either Berge or Egan, but the signings we have made, mean we have at least some solid options in place, should a good offer come in for either late in the window. From Egans perspective or Uniteds, his value is not likely to increase, so if he is going to get a good move/contract, it would make sense if his agent is touting him around at the moment.
