No he won’t. He’s a right sided CB and Tufty rates Stears very highly.

Sorry Jake Luke.
By that reply I suppose you're suggesting I prefer jake Wright to stearman? Well you're wrong, I thought stearman did well last year, so you're shit attempt at banter failed there. My original view of him replacing stearman instead of bash is based on his playing style/qualities. Which has been highlighted as a reader of the game, good in the air, strong in the tackle. However, with the ball, not so great. Which unless we're not playing overlapping cbs makes no sense to play him rcb.

Can’t be right, we only shop in the bargain basement, L1 and L2 not the Championship.
... or so I read from some of the experts on here.

Oh, you cheeky minx :) Expert? I suspect you're digging me out. I'm no expert, just someone with an opinion & an internet connection. And you know what they say about opinions, being like arseholes. :)

He'll be about the 4th signing in the last 20 or so transfers not to come from L1 or L2, and if he does equal/beat our record fee, it's only been set for nearly 11 years, so that's an indication of who we have historically bought & where from. But hopefully this is the start of a new trend in buying championship quality players for championship level fees. :)

Competition is key my dears. Egan won't be an outright replacement for anyone as Wilder never gives any player any guarantee of a place.

He could replace Bash. He could replace Stearman. He could cause both to up their game and he ends up replacing nobody (unlikely imo). The point is if one goes injured or dips in form then there is an able replacement chomping at the bit to get games. That's what Wilder's ethos is all about.
If we were to sign a player for £4m, a defender at that then there is no way he’ll be starting on the bench, it’s that simple really, Chief.

Hmmm, I know Wilder was bemoaning our defending at times last season, but if this is the one that's near 4m I'm shocked.

JO'C, Stearman, Basham, Wright, Leonard..... Yes we need improvements, but unless he's planning on shoving Bash back into midfield, I don't see how it fits (and he's not the attacking type).

Does it mean someone out?

I'd argue Egan is an upgrade on all of those (JOC included) so take your pick in terms of which one to bench.

It's just the type of signing we need. Walks straight into the first xi and makes us better!

In Tufty we Trust!

A lot saying Bash is going to be the one to dip out, and it may well be the case. However I'd say he was arguably our best player in the 2nd half of the season. Yes he has his faults but he's been immense at times.
ompetition for places is never a bad thing though, and if Egan is an upgrade then all the better for the team...
Stears to be back up. Unless the mystical he organises better than others is actually true. Even tho I’m sure that statistically we conceded waaay more goals when he plays.

That's why I said unlikely mate. If Wilder is willing to pay that amount I'm obviously inclined to think that he's probably gonna start.

The main point I was making is that under Wilder there is no guarantee of a place simply because you cost X amount if monies. You have to actually have earned that spot.

I thought that was transfers and running costs (including all wages for the year)?
Big Mc quite often used the figure of transfer fee plus wages over the contract as the figure he paid for a player so 4 mill could be 2.4m and 10k/week wages for 3 years, these numbers are plucked from the air as an example.

This would be a great signing. I feel our defending let us down last season. I’m not panicking over the front two. We have two of last seasons top scorers in the squad. But far too often we conceded and lost matches we dominated due to poor defending.

There is no way we are paying 4m for him. Brentford fans are laughing on their forum at that amount and most are also happy for him to be sold.

If we've paid close to £4m they've become the second club this summer to have our pants down.

What makes me laugh is how we haggled over 100k for about 6 years with Southend for Leonard yet apparently charge in and pay this huge amount for Egan a few months later!

I’m sure we didn’t! I’m also sure Tufty rates him very highly.

Keep trying Jake. I admire your persistence.

I know I'm being really negative here (and he's a brilliant addition in a much needed area) but I really hope we havent just spunked our entire budget.

You don't believe in this increased budgetyribbish then? :)

Hope if this gets done our defence takes a step up.

Would take a lot of pressure off the striker issue if we didn't need to score at least 2 a game to win which is what last season felt like.

I know this is novel, but how about we let Wilder make a decision on what constitutes a club "having our pants down"? Y'know... the bloke who works in football and has a bit more insight than you or I.

I hope we haven't, but one would expect CW to know what he's doing
100% but maybe this is why we are trying for loans up top. £4m is well on the way to affording Marriot, Gallagher and maybe even Hogan. Time will tell

I’m assuming you would rate O’Connell as being much, much better than Egan then?

I think loans up top is quite sensible really if you're going to have a go at getting promoted on our budget. As much as I'd rather have permanent signings, as long as they do a job for us I'm like Wilder, not fussed where they come from.

It's not a good long term strategy though admittedly, but it's the FFP friendly version of gambling.

I think he's a better, more flexible player. Also younger.

More flexible? Younger by 18 months but you could say less experienced.

Undoubtedly O’Connell is better but if we sold him to a team for anywhere near that amount you’d be going mad. I assume you’d want at least £10m for him and I can’t see how Egan is over £6m worse than O’Connell

Being good on the ball as a CB is worth a lot of money these days. Saying Egan is '£6m worse than O'Connell' would be an extreme way of putting it but I do think JOC is worth considerably more.

Please give it a rest Rick, my children keep their shit together better than you.

Didnt egan and o connell play side by side at a brentford team that were very stubborn in the goals conceded area??
Good signing this.impressed.

I don’t see much of a resale value on Egan like our friend from Brentford said. To me this sounds like we have one more signing in us and the rest will be loans. Now I imagine the purchase of anyone for a similar amount will be younger with more chance of a resale value to pass the board.

I still expect another CB which rumours of the Nigerian lad from Chelsea, and if you add Palmer and Woodburn.

I would like Freeman to replace Holmes if possible

Leaving me wanting one more striker.

Henderson
Egan
Omeruo
Palmer
Freeman
McGoldrick
Woodburn
Unnamed striker

Would be quite a window. Amazing how moods can change on only rumours!

I'm a stearman fan so thought I would check, while clearly results have been better without him in the side from these stats, I would say defensively we were very similar with or without him we just weren't scoring goals

With stearman played 28, won 8, drew 8, lost 12, scored 27, conceded 32

Without stearman played 18, won 12, drew 1, lost 5, scored 35, conceded 23
