We are pleased to announce the signing of experienced centre-back John Egan on a contract until the end of the season The Ireland international, who has won promotion twice from the Championship, departed Sheffield United in the summer.

Absolutely. Since that first PL season he's been on a downward trajectory....
I think that’s fair. Didn’t ever look comfortable when isolated. I’d perhaps go further and say that Egan, JOC and Bash were the ultimate back 3 and once that fell apart we were never quite the same. Egan was certainly not PL quality on his own but in that 3 it just worked

Yep It worked when he had pace and energy alongside him. The minute we had JLT, Ampadu et al alongside him it unravelled pretty quickly...

Sliding doors, but rather than spunking the best part of £50m on a 5th choice striker and a GK, upgrading that position (esp after JOC went down) could have saved us that disastrous 2nd PL season...

He was good but not great in my eyes. GLTTL but in 5 years time, there's a good chance I'll have forgotten about him...

I’m surprised that he’s been signed by the promotion favourite, would’ve expected he’d go to league one after his injury, let alone championship promotion favourite

Surprised me too. My mate who's a physio and knows our physios told me in the Summer he was in a bad way and would struggle to get back this side of Christmas if ever at all to this level.

Guess with all these things, rehabs can change etc, but be interesting to see when he actually plays for Burnley ....

Good luck to him - he was great for us for a few years. Small gamble by Burnley I guess as after a long injury - no guarantee he’ll be as good.

He'll be a good back-up for any injuries and/or seeing games out if holding on with 10/15 minutes left in games

I thought he'd declined a fair bit by the time he got injured. But maybe change of scenery will do him some good. Wish him all the best (except against us)

Might be me and we don't know if he will recover but surprised the criticism of him on here. It's only season before last he was still very good in a promotion winning side.

If fit he's top end Champ easily.

A fantastic servant for United. I for one was surprised we did not retain him.

More so this shows how money bags last season Burnley are faltering. They've sold all their top players and bringing in has-beens .
Eagan was OK for the blades but now past sell by date.
Still belive the blades have the best side in this league and we ain't even clicked yet .
Some team will get a huge thrashing by us soon if we score then push on and dominate.
