Joel Lynch

Would much rather just spend a bit on Kristian Pedersen and cover both those positions perfectly.

But wouldn't they say £4-5m immediately, which would be a lot for a cover signing? I expect us to make a LWB signing, maybe Osborn, maybe a loan?

So this would purely be for backup at LCB.

Which means we're unlikely to sign a proper left wing back and will just go with Freeman as cover, and maybe Osborn if he signs.

But signing Lynch is hardly better than signing no one. No sort of competition for JOC, and if JOC got injured we'd probably stick Stevens there anyway.

Is Kean Bryan that bad?

If we are going to be getting Maupay & McBurnie we are going to have to accept a few cheap stocking fillers like this.

It would be a lot, but we've given ourselves room for manoeuvre signing Jags, possibly instead of Lenihan for £5m. He's only 24 so would be a long term signing too. Would be a very useful player to have if we were relegated and/or lost O'Connell.

An alternative might be Erik Pieters for LCB / LWB. Not sure how he did last season in France, mind. But he's available. Would prefer someone with that versatility to Lynch.

Not seen him enough to comment myself, but some general comments:

O'Connell will be our first choice at LCB. We've tried adding an inexperienced young player to be cover, but for whatever reasons, Kean Bryan hasn't managed to become even that. I still doubt Wilder will prioritise competition for O'Connell, so again we're looking at a reasonable backup/cover. Maybe an experienced guy is worth a look.

Reading about him, positives include:

  • Being comfortable in possession, good on the ball
  • Quick
  • Has played left back in the past
  • Physically strong
  • Good in the air

We've used Stevens at LCB a couple of times and he did fine. But we've got no cover for him in his main position at the moment. And with the way the squad is looking, we may be struggling for height, especially if we move Stevens to LCB.

Let's not write Lynch off at this stage.

Whilst I take your point, and I was a little harsh, he's soon to be 32 and never played at the top level. He might be steady for a couple of cameo appearances or a game or two but if anything happened to JoC he'd be our first choice and blimey. If it's a cheap 1 year just in case signing, then possibly at a huge stretch but he'd need to be a potential third choice.

He would have been great cover last season.

QPR fans seem genuinely shocked that he's even been given a trial. Must admit, don't get this one at all. Either Wilder is just trying to get a couple of extra bodies for pre-season to help training or Kean Bryan is utter garbage.

It's pretty simple, if we sign our 2.main attacking targets everyone will accept that we need to get bargains elsewhere. Until we do there will be scepticism that we are going to spend premiership type money on players.

Maupay and McBurnie along with Jags,Morrison, Lynch et al will be a good summer, we 'just' need the first two !

and Freeman

Just asked a Huddersfield season ticket holder "Solid and strong defender. Bit of weakness when reading the game. Can deal well with set pieces. "

Anybody remember that, 'If Carlsberg did football agents,' ad?

No harm at all in taking a look at him. Hes a solid pro, and if CWAK like the look of him then i would be happy enough for us to take the lad on.

No one even seemed the slightest bit fussed when Cranie signed. He went on to be a pivotol player for us in the run in last season. I will trust CWAK's judgement on this one, they know a damned site more than i do about football.

I'd be underwhelmed if we sign him. He's been poor for years and was released by QPR because he's simply a crap footballer. Don't see him as a suitable O'Connell back-up because he's nowhere near mobile enough for that role. He's slow, turns like a truck and doesn't read the game well. Type of signing a bottom end Champ or top end League 1 side would make. If Wilder decides to sign him I'll be surprised and hope to be proved wrong (which I probably will be now I've said this!).
