Player Suggestion Jimmy Dunne

Dunne doesn’t need to be as good as Souttar but he does need to lead the back line in the same way. Souttar almost always attacked the ball, and the other defenders knew to react to that trigger.

Anel in physical battles and Robinson involved in foot races is a hard watch.

Should have been a priority.

I am sure it became the priority as soon as we lost Souttar. But as I have said on other threads, we also had other priorities and we shouldn't expect the club to neglect those just because we also need a CB.

Think back to before we lost him, it was fairly well accepted that we were short of a ST and a LAM/LW. Presumably the recruitment team were working on those targets months ago, so it stands to reason that deals will have been put together and lined up. It's no coincidence they were the first positions filled when the window opened.

I was a big fan of Dunne based on his performance in our 2-2 draw with QPR.

On reflection he’s more CB and tbh fits the exact mould of a battling player that grinds out a performance that I would expect from a Wilder signing.

But, compare him to Soutter who was a presence, a good out ball distributor and an excellent CB I’m now thinking he might look the part but he’s a totally different player, maybe a cheap option (again what I’d expect) but not a replacement for the big fella.

If we bought him as a RB then maybe but not as a CB
Wasn't JLT a RB who ended up playing CB, and wasn't particularly good at either?

Is this history repeating itself??

Robinson has actually been a good signing though
Yep, had a shaky start to his United career. Since the dark days of what felt like a calamity every other game, he's become a dependable pillar of the back line. At times, waiting for him to wipe out an oppo player, sending them into the front row, was the only highlight of games.

No doubt we need to improve in his position, but he doesn't deserve the vitriol he sometimes gets on here.

I imagine we've combed the premiership looking for an experienced centreback with similar strengths to Soutter, getting one in will be difficult as dominant centrebacks who can play won't drop into the championship easily.
Could probably pick up a young inexperienced one on loan ! but we need an experienced one who is a leader as well.
Maybe we have settled on next best Dunne ! an experienced player with a lot of the strengths of Soutter ! Height and a willingness to attack the ball is a must . If 6ft3ins probably as close as we will get ! he has the reputation of attacking the ball from crosses etc if so probably will fit the bill.Been around and plenty of championship experience
we have been poor at attacking set plays maybe he will add that ( the one thing soutter didn't give us) a lot of thought will have gone into this I'm sure ! hopefully Wilder will pull a rabbit out of the hat.
Dave Bassett was good at bringing players in who could do a job at short notice ( Webster who broke his leg followed by Bob Booker who became a legend)we have to get this one right.

But you say Dunne can play full back but his distribution won’t be as good as Souttar.

He must have decent distribution to play full back and get up the pitch.

Agree that it seems like the cheap option. Last 6 months of his deal probably a signing around £250k like we did with Robbo.

Great value for money but it doesn’t take us to the next level.

Robinson has actually been a good signing though

Unquestionably great value.

He's been here 5 years and is on 125 appearances, competing in the PL or top of Championship.

I think he gets too much of a rough time from fans. He has his limitations, but he's excellent at what he's supposed to be (a guy that steps in when needed, minimal fuss, does a decent job).

On Dunne, it concerns me that he appears to be best at RB because we e got Kenny coming in here so presumably he'll be a CB for us and presumably he's better at RB? He's aggressive though which is always good and he'd compliment Anel. I still think we'll be after Woolfenden as first choice.

Dunne would make sense if we were sending Gilchrist back but not so much if he is going to be the only CB we sign.

fair point captain but still think we need better if were to finish top 2 robinson is ok in a back 3 imo but doesnt look comfortable in a back 4 maybe choudray coming in may help robinson but personally would still like to see a souttar replacement come in

From Danny Hall in The Star

[Dunne's] side slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home to United’s city rivals Wednesday, with boss Martí Cifuentes quizzed by The Star over United’s interest in Dunne after the full time whistle.

“I have not heard anything from the club's perspective on it,” the Spaniard said. “Jimmy is a very important player, I know that he loves to be at QPR, he loves the club and we all love him, so we will see what happens. But he is a very important player for us.”

Dunne is out of contract at Loftus Road in the summer, leaving the Londoners potentially vulnerable to a cut-price bid rather than risk one of their key men leaving for nothing in the summer. The defender had a fleeting experience of playing in the Premier League during his time with Burnley - and may be seduced by the possibility of doing so again with promotion-chasing United.

The news on Kenny today makes it seem like Dunne is a right back target if we can’t get a deal with Hertha done. We sign a good centre back alongside either of those two right backs and I think it’s been two exceptional windows in a row.

Nah I think reading between the lines we want a specialist right back. Neither Gilchrist or Dunne are this.

These are his heat maps from the this and the previous three seasons...

So it looks like he was always a CB and transitioned to RB sometime last season. No idea why - did he excel there or did they get better CBs? Or do they have adequate CBs and no-one to fill in at RB? Did he stop being good at CB so was farmed out to RB?

Danny Hall suggesting Dunne was a target alongside Kenny so seems like you’re right, don’t really think Dunne is a centre half anymore though, he has the versatility to do it when required but he vastly improved as a player after making the switch.

The consensus from them is that he's shaky at CB but excellent at RB. If we do sign him, it should be a replacement for Gilchrist, definitely not Souttar.
