here is more to the goalkeeping mix than Steve Simonsen as United spread the net to find a successor to the departed Paddy Kenny.

The Irish International's defection to QPR has let Kevin Blackwell with the unexpected task of finding an experienced replacement sooner rather than later.

And although the man who was on loan at the Lane from Stoke late last season is a contender the United boss has other irons in the fire:

"Steve did well and we know all about him but it is far from nailed on and there are other quality goalkeepers about such as Jamie Ashdown (free agent) and Marton Fulop (Sunderland) who we are also looking at.

"I would really like to tie a deal up by next week because we had major problems last season by not starting with a regular number one. It is very important that we get one in and bedded down quickly."

Not sure he's a number one, having been second choice at pretty much every club he's been at!

Interesting.

A Stoke ITKer (who seems to be fairly well trusted) on BladesMad was saying that the Simmo deal is deffo on. And that Carl Dickinson is coming on a season long loan too.

There is one VERY important thing in this guys favour in Blackies eyes.... he will be free!

Not just n Blackies eyes, everyone's eyes. We have very little money to spend so a freebie would be very attractive right now.

ive never heard of him.must be quality if weve never heard of him.Is sal bibbo still going?

Don't be surprised to see Simmo and Ashdown arrive (or any combination). As I've been saying previously, we need 2 x gk's, not one.

Both Benno and PK have left the club and I don't recall many clubs going into the season with only two gks on their books.

Ohh, didn't think of that. Good point well made, but will these deals still happen now that Billy is staying put?

Do people on here have selective memories? Simonsen was Stoke's no.1 for a number of years, including during their promotion season.

He's a very good goalkeeper who commands his area and has the right strength of character to be no.1. You can see that from just watching him play.

I would love to sign Steve Simonsen, however I don't like the argument against Ashdown who has played more premierleague football than Steve in the last few years.

Since 1996 Steve Simonsen has played 238 matches which is an average of 17 games per season. Not exactly a number 1 keeper.

I think the argument against Simmo is flawed.

He went to Everton as a youngster and struggled to break into their team (behind the likes of Thomas Myhre, Paul Gerrard and Richard Wright).
He went to Stoke and, as Lou pointed out, was their number one right up until them getting promoted when they brought in Sorensen.

There is no argument against Simonsen, It is more of making a case for Ashdown.

I would prefer Simonsen

Whilst I would prefer Simonsen, I wouldn't be disappointed with Ashdown either. He played regularly for Pompey a couple of seasons back as they finished mid-table in the PL. I think his time was up when they signed James but he would be a solid enough goalie for us if he came.

I'd like to see us go with Aksalu - if he's as good as is being said by Blackwell and staff - and one of Simmo/Ashdown with the option to loan one if needed (not difficult usually). And if we were desperate for a keeper, we must have a youngster who can sit on the bench?

Getting Simmo AND Ashdown would be expensive and we need the money to spend on defenders.

I agree that we should go with the Estonian No 2 as our keeper. Last season was ridiculous we had Benno as No 2 but when PK was banned went and signed keeper after keeper on loan. Seems that being No 2 at the Blades means never getting a game even when the No 1 is injured. Surely Aksalu is worth a punt after all Mart Poom was a pretty good keeper.
