Right Back Rumours?

I spoke to him at the end of the season and he was definitely frozen out after a disagreement with the manager. He also said that he loved his time at the lane when everything was cool.

I agree with 71Blade on this. I saw Gilchrist in two away games last season - Norwich where he was right back and West Brom where he played right centre back as Souttar and Anel both absent (suspended?). Against decent opposition he defended well overall, particularly so at Norwich. I accept he didn’t do so much going forward, but perhaps this was on instructions. Late period Wilder teams, ie second prem season and after his return, regularly had the full backs passing inside or backwards on reaching half way and not advancing. So frustrating! Anyhow, I think the purchase of Gilchrist is a much better option than loaning Godfrey. He is younger, has scope to improve with good coaching, will be cheaper, and offers the same right back / centre back versatility. He’ll also be our player.

I thought he was solid defensively, not as bad as folk make out in progressing the ball forward (though definitely not a wing back like Seriki), good value at £1.5m, and fills a couple of positions we need cover for. On that basis is be fine with bringing him in. I just think he is ideally suited to playing on the right of a back three and we don't play that system. I think he'll be a decent player for the right team.

It's alright saying £1.5 million but they'll want all manner of clauses.

I think it's worth it though. Seriki is going to play 60-70 minutes of games and then not two in a row. They'd be good interchanging and he can also play CB so cover there.

I actually thought he started the season really well. We were much better defensively with that back four. And let's be honest, he doesn't need to get forward in a 4-3-3 if you're acting O'Hare/Hamer in front of him.

Everybody is going on about tje supposed 1.5m fee but what wages do you think he will want? More than we will want to pay a back up for sure.

Be interesting to see where he ends up and how his career develops as IMHO for the championship he isnt big enough or strong enough to play CB or quick enough or good enough going forward to play RB

think rcb in a back 3 is exactly gilchrist best position as you say brisblade and as you say were not going to be playing that system under selles

But having the option to play 3-5-2 would be useful.
Games where teams sit deep, lack width, and hope to launch balls behind our defenders and turn us, likely at home, might be a benefit to change things up for us.
What do we get from a Ben Godfrey except a huge bill?

We need a LCB, a RCB and a RB. The money we may have to pay to get BG could cover wages for all 3 of those positions if the numbers quoted are correct.

Do you think we should offer McBurnie a 3 year contract and pay him 30K a week like Hull did?

Of course not!
Absolutely not, but that’s what we’re up against for players we DO want.

Pigs are proof of the pudding in creating a culture of clubs driven beyond their means. Liverpool have had a bid of £100m for Isaac turned down and player is trying force a move no doubt wages of over £1m / month.

Unfortunately that attitude and transfer fees/wages just filters down the lower leagues via good player ambition. Problem is that then sets and unrealistic fee/wage expectations and players like McBurnie can demand £30k a week.

If all average players can demand that then more billionaires are needed to challenge the spending limits set by PL/EFL which have lost touch with the inflation in the game. Result will be ST increases and more spendagedon casualties in the next few seasons.

We appear to be trying to stick to a sustainable model. That might see us slip against clubs like Forest, Birmingham, Wrexham et al.

Totally this.
We seem to be going about things in a sensible and sustainable manner, quite refreshing considering how we have operated before.

Keep an eye on Premier league RB transfers over next week or so, and see who falls down the pecking order/falls outside the squad reg:).

None of us know what we’d be willing to spend on the right player. Maybe we could and would have matched or even bettered Hull’s offer if we really wanted McBurnie.

As we’ve already got Campbell, Cannon and Oné, we maybe thought the resources would be better spent on other areas of the team e.g. centre back.

I think One' may be a big part player this season.
