The reason the Phillips deal has fallen through isnt because anyone has 'seen sense' Wilder has been pretty adamant that he wanted Phillips back. So, as some have suggested, hes either injured again or City wanted us to pay too much of his wages. Jairo was plan B not plan A.

We’re always criticised for not having a Plan B 😉

In this case Plan B > Plan A.

interesting he specifically said he was in contact with the club in May.

The communication from the club to the fans certainly didn't make it clear talks were ongoing.

Let's hope we can get him into a full 90 minutes now after previously joining in October.

End of the day it’s the right outcome and if he’s happy about it then you can make the case no harm done.

Would be good to see us being more decisive.

I’d hate to think the plan is to offload all we feel we need to before we can make the correct moves or we’ll be reduced to picking up the dross that’s left.

This is a decent move in isolation but you have to think about it in squad terms too. The consequences:

  • if you play Riedewald and Rothwell together that is a slow pairing
  • you have to find someone else to play in Riedewald's place because whilst he's useful he is a pretty good bet to miss at least a third of the games, and he can't do 90 minutes either
  • he has a poor scoring record for a midfielder

Hence no more Shackleton-like scrappy midgets should come in as cover, as they won't help us.

i think phillips does have an injury issue and thats why jairo has been re signed good move for both parties and i also think rothwell will come good despite all the negativity about him on here

I wasnt disappointed to to jairo released and not disappointed to see him return .

He's a known entity and as risk free as you get which there are few of in the transfer market.

Hopefully this is abandoning the Philips signing who would be a very risky option and would probably consume 3 salaries.

If were going to take a few chances on signings make them with players who are low risk , high potential .

We tend to do ok with those .

As long as it’s not a dress and whicker handbag 👜

So why rinse and repeat
Because we're a better team with Riedewald in the lineup. We were looking at a relegation scrap before Bamford and Riedewald came in as free agents and ended up comfortably mid-table.
If there was no way Jairo could ever play more than 60mins, then I'd be against the signing. But, if he can get up to full fitness with a proper pre-season, then we've got ourselves a very classy operator at this level. He clearly has the potential to play the full 90, because he did it multiple times last season.
If you look at the stats below where he played 75+ mins, you'll see a remarkable correlation between the time he was on the pitch and our best performances from last season:

I wouldn’t be against Choudhury. We might have to wait but a late loan bid with option would give cover for the matches Riedewald may miss but also cover Seriki too.

You’d be getting 2 positions sorted in one swoop.

You could then focus on sorting out the central defence.

I suppose it also depends what formation we are focusing on then. We have few wide attacking players if we are persevering with 4-2-3-1 over switching to 5 at the back. I’d argue 5 at the back is cheaper to recruit for; in terms of cash, wingers > defenders.

I’d be against that move because that’s yet another midfielder with no offensive output.

This is my point re squad building. You don’t want too many of the same type of players.

He would be a good signing if we hadn’t saddled ourselves needlessly with Rothwell.
